“Nice Family Retreat”
Reviewed 24 January 2014

My Family and I have stayed here several times and thoroughly enjoy the views, the roomy 2 bedroom units, and the staff. That being said, the quality and condition of the unit you stay in may vary. Our last stay was in 101C which has great views but needs a few minor repairs and is somewhat dated. We also had a little visitor that chewed a chunk out of our loaf of bread in the kitchen cabinet. If your ok with a few minor issues like this, which I am, the view and the staff make the stay worth it.

My wife and I spent 5 nights, October 21-26, at The Highlands. After reading some of the negative views I had a little concern. But our "fears" quickly disappeared! The check was easy. the staff was friendly and helpful. And our unit, 106 E, had a great view over the mountains. Yes, the condos are older. And the exterior needs some repair. But our unit had new carpet. It was spacious. The bedroom had a comfortable King bed. A fully equipped kitchen. Wet bar. Dining area. And comfortable family room with a fireplace and a great view.

We are blessed to be there at peak time for colors. It was fantastic. It did turn cold and we had a skiff of snow one morning, so we burned a lot of wood. And had a great time!

If you go with the understanding these are not brand new units, but are spacious, comfortable and very functional and are priced reasonably, you will enjoy it!

This group of condo units is situated near the top of Sugar Mountain in the Northwestern region of North Carolina. My wife and I had a great time at this resort. A nice romantic setting for a couple or a great place for a family to enjoy the best of the Smoky Mountains.
There are caverns nearby, too many hiking trails to mention, day trips to Tennessee - which is less than 30 minutes away (we found a very nice indoor shooting range there), horseback riding, white water rafting and just plain enjoying all the eye candy everywhere we looked.
In particular Grandfather Mountain, Elk River Falls and Banner Elk stables stood out among the best day trips we took. The Falls can be a full day as there are great swimming areas there and the beauty of that place is worth some time...
The resort itself, while not a newer property has wonderful charm and all the amenities we needed, including the biggest in-room jacuzzi tub we had ever seen. Took an hour to fill!! Great fun. In wall speakers throughout the unit, which we used regularly.
Our unit was high up with a perfect view of Grandfather Mountain and surrounding area. As far as the staff goes, they were great, especially Chris and Laura who cheerfully helped us whenever we needed anything. They also have some live entertainment in the evening and group trips to nearby attractions if that's what interests anyone.
It was enjoyable to escape the summer heat for a while in this beautiful mountain setting and we miss it quite a bit. This is a great vacation venue for anyone seeking beautiful scenery and tranquil mountain settings. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Highest unit you can with good mountain views.

I was very pleased with the Highlands on Sugar Mtn. The exterior of the buildings are dated but the interior of our 2 bedroom was awesome. The condos are spacious and comfortable and ours had a magnificent view. The staff was accommodating in every way. They have wine & cheese parties, breakfasts and many activities you can sign up for. The staff helped us with reservations for white water rafting, suggested local restaurants (zuzda is a MUST DO!) and arranged for us to visit the Biltmore house not too far away. Yes, the appliances could be new state-of the art and the counter tops could be granite but those additions would not have made my vacation any better.

We had a l bdrm and a 2 bdrm with 5 adults and 3 children. We were in the first
building so we didn't have the same view as the people higher on the mountain.
That's my biggest complaint. The condos are older but are very spacious and
clean. Nice towels, great water pressure, nice fireplace-didn't use it. Huge Jacuzzi
tub. The wine and appetizers were good. We didn't participate in the other dinners
and breakfast. Hard to find so get good directions from the staff before you leave.
Staff was good and listened to my husbands complaints, no working phone, light out in our hallway and no hair dryer. We would go back. Our children felt the pool
needs some updating. We rely on reviews before booking condo. There is a lot to
do in the area.

We found the resort to be clean, great front desk staff, prompt service for maintenance issue. As for being dated, it seems to me resort replaces appliances as needed, furniture is old, but comfortable. Our villa had great stereo speaker system for our 2 floor, 2 bedroom, 2 bath, with whirlpool tub, New large flat screen TV, full kitchen, and balcony on each floor with a beautiful view of other mountains. The resort had a nice wine and cheese party one night and a very nice full breakfast one morning. Overall, we had a very nice vacation here and would highly recommend.

After reading the previous reviews, I was VERY reluctant to stay at the Highlands at Sugar. After returning home and looking at the pictures of our trip to Banner Elk, I AM SO GLAD we stayed there. We had a fantastic time there. Our unit was very up to date and clean. The updates the resort looked to be doing were fantastic. I would definitely recommend staying here.
