“Fantastic in all respects!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

This was our second stay at Byrd's Nest. Once was definitely not enough. I cannot say enough about this place. Some friends visited us one day and they were very impressed. That says a lot as they are usually the type that stayed someplace bigger and better, so their superlatives were surprising was surprising.
There is lots to do while you're here. We played horseshoes and tether ball and both my son and wife love the tree swing in the woods. My son (he's 27) was on it before we'd even unpacked the car. Inside there are board games and DVDs for entertainment. And of course there are the views. I could just sit on the big rock and enjoy the mountains.
The cabin is impressive with its layout. The full kitchen is very welcome as is the hot tub. Biggest drawback is the skylight in the upstairs bedroom. It brings enough light into the room to wake you early each morning.
This is definitely a destination. The drive up and down the mountain is not something you want to do several times in a day. Fortunately there is a grocery store at the bottom of the mountain. Get yourself one of their discount cards the first day in town. We saved a bunch of money that way. You will want to stock the pantry so plan out your meals ahead of time as there is no such thing as a "quick trip to the store".
There are several fast food places in town that stay open late, but everything else tends to shut down pretty early. Luckily it's not that far a drive to Asheville if you are in the mood for some more urban activities. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are also an easy drive.
After a couple trips up the mountain you'll get used to the twists and turns on the paved road, but you might never get used to the gravel drive. It is bumpy and dusty unless it's bumpy and muddy. No need for 4 wheel drive except maybe in the winter. It does make you feel like you are out in the wilderness.
We will most likely be back in the next year or two.
