Upon recommendation of a friend who regularly visits the area, I made reservations through OpenTable for us to eat at Gamekeeper for dinner during our recent short visit to Boone. We reviewed the menu online before we went and I was sure to read as many negative reviews as possible (people seem to have such high expectations sometimes...) before going, just to see if the Gamekeeper had potential for flaw. We were pleased that our evening seemed to go the way of most reviewers' experiences here on TripAdvisor: quite positively!

The food: We ordered the Mixed Game Grill (not as much food as most said it was); the bibb lettuce salad, which was delicious and perfectly dressed with pickled onions and candied pecans; the rabbit entree, which was fantastic; and the cheese plate for dessert. The cheese plate could have used a bit of adjustment, as the fruit spread was a strange texture and the fruit on the platter was just dried cranberries, which were challenging to keep on a cracker or with a bite of the really excellent cheeses.

The drinks: We felt that the drinks were a tad overpriced, but since we dine out frequently, we know that is to be expected at a restaurant like this. I had an $8 glass of Malbec (have had better Malbecs for less $), and my husband had three Stoli and cranberry drinks, which put his individual drink tab at $22. Ouch!

The atmosphere: A few of the tables appeared to be cozy and quiet, but most of the tables were very close to other tables, and we heard the conversations of everyone seated around us. At one point, a larger party that included several young children kept allowing their kids to travel loudly back and forth across the restaurant to the bathroom. Unfortunately, we were seated right by the bathroom, so we had our peace interrupted several times before the table of loudness decided to make its exit from the restaurant. With some minor adjustments, the quiet could easily be achieved in this beautiful dining space.

The service: We had really kind, prompt, knowledgable service, which made our experience great despite the minor aforementioned things. Many thanks to our server, Noelle, and the other staff members who seemed to be working so hard, for making it an overall very nice evening for us!

We would go back to this establishment, and hope that others will continue to have the overall positive experience that we did there.

Great restaurant if you enjoy great food in a pleasant atmosphere conducive to relaxing conversation. We were a party of eight on a foggy snowy Saturday evening. With a fire in the fireplace and attentive, but not intrusive, service we probably took up a table longer than we should have. Not going to recite everything everyone had but my choice was Venison Osso Buco (Italian for bone with a hole) which I learned, after I asked was cooked with the shank bone in. Others had Buffalo, Pheasant Breast, Duck and an appetizer sampler (I called it) with Pheasant, quail, boar sausage and maybe something else. The price reflects the quality but well worth it. I read in an article after we returned home that the owners joke that it is high dollar hash. If you have a dainty appetite and are prone to tea room fare you will probably be happier somewhere else.

Our favorite restaurant to eat at when in town, have eaten there a couple times a year since it opened back in 2000. We lived in the area for 8 years moved away in 2005, we would go to the bar for apps and drinks many times during the year, miss being 20 minute drive from home! We've met friends there, had date nights and family gatherings over the years. Yes Shulls Mill Rd. is very curvy road (if snowy you must have 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive), it also adds to the experience and well worth the drive! The food, the wine choices, the drink mixes, the atmosphere, the service and the owners, best place in the High Country of Western NC!!! Can’t wait to be there again sharing the mixed app or fried oysters or snake, and following up with delicious rabbit or elk or trout or boar… great too because the menu changes with the seasons and what’s available from local farms. The owners are wonderful and talented people who cook with love.

If close to Boone please try this place. I had the ostrich entree and my husband the pheasant. Both meals were spectacular! The potato soup and bibb salad was also good. The wine pairings the waitress suggested was a good combination with our meal. If you want a top notch meal with out of the box choices you will not be disappointed.
