“Fantastic”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

This is by far one of our favorite restaurants. We go about once a year and look forward to the next visit before we even leave. The atmosphere is quaint, located down a winding road lined with beautiful old oak trees. On our visit last week I had the bison and he had elk. The side dish with the elk was blue cheese macaroni….spectacular!! We had just returned from Yellowstone where elk and bison were on every menu so we were excited to relive the memory. The chef did a fabulous job as the entree was prepared perfectly. The waitress was knowledgeable and happy and provided a very satisfying experience. The home in which is now the Gamekeeper restaurant has history so ask your server.

Make a reservation.

“Novel, but average...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

First let me say that our meal was good and the service was outstanding; with that said however, you're paying for the novel-ness of the food, not the unique-ness of it. I had elk--correctly prepared (rare) but nothing different than mid-range beef. My wife had bison flank steak--and while good, nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, the only that that really stood out was the macaroni and blue cheese--that was almost worth another star just on it's own...

The other thing that was disappointing was the beverage selection--or rather--the lack of it. The beer selection was not good (the bartender was pushing 'PBR' for some unknown reason) and neither was their liquor selection.

Lastly, don't rely on the website to accurately show what's on the menu for today--I was told it's not updated very often.

“Great food and scenic location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

Friends took us here for dinner. Had heard about the restaurant but never tried. Service and food were wonderful. Wife and I had wild game mixed grill including buffalo and elk. Absolutely perfectly prepared. All food and drinks were timely served and the ambiance, although a little dated was great. View during the day would be fabulous. I would definitely try outside dining, weather permitting the next time. We will definitely be back.

“Overhyped”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

Very, very expensive for what you get; for $42/entree, bison meat itself was less than 2-3 oz of grisly meat-thrown into a sea of kale and mashed potatoes. Should have gone to Montana Grill. Environment is very ordinary with klunky uncomfortable kitchen chairs; the drive up curvy mountain roads not for the faint of heart. But I guess- better than Applebee's.

“Very Consistent from Visit to Visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

Second visit here and this visit was very consistent with the first. There were some highs and some OKs. The concept is interesting and the setting beautiful, but for the price the OKs bring the rating down a notch.

Highs on this second visit were huckleberry fritters with lamb. Delicious, party in the mouth combination of flavors. The escarole salad with shaved venison was very tasty, almost a play on a wedge salad.

My wife had the mule-hoof pork chop. It was by FAAAARRRR the best pork chop I had ever tasted. I wished I had gotten it instead of the bison, which was OK but came out a bit cold.

Last, the bread pudding was much better this time around.

We were told that the restaurant had to close for several months to dig a new well and that the staff (including in the kitchen) had turned over nearly 100%. That made the consistency in the cooking more impressive and the glitches in service (e.g., a long delay in getting our wine out) more understandable.
