This hotel was beautiful, clean, and comfortable. Our bill for 1 night (under100 dollars) was reasonable and included a great breakfast. We would definitely return if in the area. Some rooms had balconies which would be nice to look at nearby mountain scenery.

Room was nice size, but cluttered with furniture; hard to move freely. Jaccuzi tub was extremely noisy and had more chlorine in the water than a public pool. My wife and I stayed in nicer hotels that were half the price.

Nice basic hotel, great value for the price. We had a balcony but there were no chairs
and the Air vent you could see the dirt was the only real negative. The rest of the room was clean. Staff was very helpful. We brought our bikes on this trip and an nice off road trail is
on the other sided of the front of Lowe's which is right next door to the hotel.

Room Tip: If you want to use the balcony get a floor above the 1st or you will be looking at cars. Since we b...

I travel a lot and I don't consider myself to be as picky as others. But I am compelled to say that I experienced my first really rude staff employee at the HI Express in Boone. I won't give you a play-by-play, but suffice it to say that she was completely unprofessional. The room wasn't that great either. They state that it's a balcony room, but it's just a stupid door that you can step out to view the parking lot. Balcony is misleading.

Room Tip: Probably want to avoid this Holiday Inn and stay elsewhere. Not worth the price. I'm learning th...

Dear Ken S,

Thank you very much for taking the time to let us know about your recent experience. I am trying to understand what took place that left you disappointed with our hotel. We always strive to provide clean, comfortable, and friendly accommodations. For that reason, your comments are very troubling and will certainly be looked into. I would like to sincerely apologize if you felt that one of our Front Desk Associates was unprofessional. I am certain it was not her intention to be rude and I am very sorry for anything that she said or did that left you feeling as if she was. Please kindly accept my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused by this situation.

Our ears popped as we drove through the Appalachian Mountains into Boone, N.C., allegedly the highest settlement of any size (population 18,000} east of the Mississippi and the namesake of the pioneer-frontiersman-hunter who pitched a tent there. We had gone to Boone for a wedding that was set in a breathtaking sylvan clearing near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Had we given our destination some forethought like the backpackers we dodged along the road, we might have pitched a tent, too. Instead we settled for a limited view of the hills from room 326 of Boone’s Holiday Inn Express. Like Mr. Boone, however, we slept in fresh mountain air.

All the inn’s rooms, like climate-controlled hotel rooms everywhere, had double-glazed, locked-in, locked-down, immobilized windows. Instead, we found the usual apparatus that regurgitates air for breathing, heating and cooling. But our room, like half those on the second-through-fifth floors, also had a balcony. It had a door to the balcony, and a lock. The lock didn’t work, but such is the inn’s design that not even a monkey could have reached reach us. So at night we opened the door, put a pillow under the frame to stabilize it and slept as soundly enough in fact to compensate for mattresses that had gone frumpy and soft. Still, we would encourage guests to take a balcony room other than 326. Much of our view was blocked by a massive brown pyramid atop the inn’s entrance portico.

Predictably, as a generic outpost of a nationwide chain, Boone’s Holiday Inn Express offers nothing more than it promises. It is what it is, a limited service hotel. It doesn’t do room service, for example, or come with a bar or a restaurant. But what it does do, it does well. Our room, dwarfed by two massive queen-size beds, felt initially like a Mattress Discounters showroom. But it had a large dresser with six drawers, easily more than we needed for our two-night stay. We had an ample enough closet, an easy chair, an adequate straight-back chair, a serviceable desk, Wi-Fi, a large, fully equipped bathroom, and a wet bar where I could shave and make coffee while Yvonne, My Favorite American, showered. It had a big, flat-screen TV, too, and an alarm clock that was easy to work. We didn’t like the lighting much though. It was the Artic white, energy-efficient type used in hospital operating rooms.

For services, we liked the check-in guy. He was smart, quick and well-informed about both the town and the inn. On a subsequent stop at the desk, however, another clerk had never heard of the Boone Golf Club, a prominent institution two minutes and less than a mile from the inn. The breakfast service was the most proficient we have used at a limited service hotel. The buffet bar was well stocked with the usual variety of coffee and juice, hot and cold cereal, omelets, sausage, bagels, corn bread, Danish, biscuits and gravy, and sugar-glazed buns. On our two weekend mornings, when the place was packed with homecoming alumni of Appalachian State University, they never ran out of a thing. Trash was emptied every five or ten minutes. When the breakfast lounge filled up, guests were directed to a suitable meeting room. As Yvonne and an alumnus were pouring hot water for tea, he told her, “I’ve been coming here for three years for ASU events. It has the most nice people I’ve been to.”

We paid this Holiday Inn $223 a night for our room—more than we have paid a big-city Ritz or two. They get away with it. That is evidence enough that Boone, although tucked among the remote and destitute hollows of Appalachia, is no boondock and its Holiday Inn no shack.

Room Tip: Half the rooms on floors two through five have balconies. Ask for a balcony room facing the mountain...

Loved the room with balcony views! Spacious with fridge. Iron was broken and replacement made quickly. The mattresses in our room were old and quite uncomfortable. We were there 4 nights so I used the comforter as a mattress pad. Much better sleeping tho a newer mattress would have been best. Clean rooms and decent breakfast.

Great locations to stay if you're passing through the Blue Ridge Mountains. We walked in without a reservation and were helped straight away by very friendly and welcoming staff members.

Rooms were very clean and spacious - unfortunately we didn't get much sleep. The walls were pretty thin and we could hear EVERYTHING going on not only in the rooms next to us but up and down the hallway. When a room door in the corridor would shut it sounded like thunder had hit.

Wifi was complimentary but the connection was pretty slow so gave up. Awesome that breakfast and parking was complimentary.

Great value for money - stay here if you are passing through and need a place to crash,
