“Horse Train”

Nantahala Village Riding Stable
Reviewed 3 July 2014

The trip was cheap and worth it if you have children who have never been riding. That being said, any person who has riding experience would find this trip a bit dull. The horses, as to be expected, followed each other like a train and looked to be under proper care. The guides were nice but if you are more than three horses back you cant here anything. Lots of trees to see but little mountain/lake scenery on the 1hr trip. The longer the trip you take the better.

We are a family of 5 and chose this as our first horseback riding experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the horses (Shirley, Flash, Jade, Pearl, and Rocky), as well as meeting Junie and Scott. The only drawback was the trail. It was nice, but no view, no lake, just trees. We found out after we had started that there was a better trail but unfortunately that isn't the one we were taken on for our hour. We were also overcharged a little for the ride. We stayed in the Treehouse Cabins which should have given us a discount, but the amount we paid was slightly more than even $22 per person. Not sure why. I would go again, but make sure that we were taken on a better trail to make the visual experience more worth it. As it was, we were only able to enjoy the horses.

We had a 5 year old, a 4 year old and a 2 year old and all of them got to ride on a horse for a nice one-hour trip in the Nantahala Forest. It is an easy place to get to and the staff are very friendly and help out small children. Both the 4 year old and the 5 year old got to ride their own horse while our 2 year old rode with my wife. It was a great experience and would recommend to anyone. There may be better trips out there with better views, but this trip was a nice ride in the mountains adjacent to the Fontana Lake. We had very limited views of the lake, but didn't mind as it was a peaceful ride through the mountains.

The people were wonderful. Horses were well cared for and gentle. Family friendly. We did the one hour ride and that was perfect.

Several members of the extended family booked a trail ride during our family reunion. Ages of the riders ranged from 6yo to mid 40s. Some of the children as well as adults had no previous riding experience.
The staff at the stables was extremely organized and efficient as well as being quite safety conscious. Everyone totally enjoyed the ride, and the children were so delighted at being able to ride independently.
Just this past week the stable began to offer pony rides, so our younger folks... 3-6yo...had their own riding opportunities. Again, it was such a positive experience and the little ones were thrilled.
I have been on many trail rides, but I can honestly say, none were as well done as this one. The staff all appeared to enjoy what they do and they communicated their love for the animals and the area to all the riders.
