Two Rivers Lodge is a privately owned motel which gives it a relaxed family friendly feeling. The owner personally brought around our fresh towels everyday, and even let us use her cell phone when ours couldn't get a signal. The location of the motel is great. It's on Highway 19, a quiet two lane road, and is exactly five miles from Bryson City in one direction, and five miles from Cherokee in the other direction. One road takes you into the heart of both. Behind the motel two large, active rivers join. I was hoping it was a place where we could wade out, but the bank was too steep, and the water too immediately rushing and deep. So to get into the river, you can drive down the street a short way to a canoe/ raft launch area.
Our room was a nice size, with two double beds, a microwave, half-size fridge, a toaster oven, a coffee maker and coffee supllies. The room was thoughtfully stocked with paper plates, cups and plastic utensils. That made it perfect for us with an 8 year old who needed lunch when he needed lunch and made it affordable so we didn't have to go out all the time.
The motel is not new. We had some peeling paint on the bathroom doorframe, but the room and bathroom were extremely clean. It smelled musty when we first entered, like a woodsy cabin that had been locked up for a while, but leaving the door open for a while made it just fine. It was locked up air- not moldy air. There are no mosquitos (at least that we could find), so it was no problem leaving the door to air out the room. Also, if you plan on making business calls from there, forget it. No long distance calls allowed from the room phones, and your cell phone very likely won't work. My Virgin phone wouldn't.
My son loved the pool. He and my husband said it was very clean and well maintained, and I loved the peaceful, quiet, middle of the mountain nights. I only wish there were fewer lights around the outside of the motel at night- not that they enter the room at all- but I couldn't find a really dark place to use a telescope! Overall, a nice break from the big chains at a great location, and good for a family on a budget who wants to eat in now and then.
