This was a great trip! We loved the scenery and how all the employees would come by and have different things for the kids on board.

“Scenic Adventure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

We did the Nantahala Gorge trip right after Memorial Day and had reserved seats in the Piedmont Car. Check-in was quick and we received our complimentary travel mugs. Since we were a party of 4 we had facing seats. Leg room was a bit cramped but after some adjustment we settled down for a pleasant journey. Train departed right at 10:30 scheduled time. Ride was very pleasant with swaying of the cars especially at slow speeds. We had Pam as our car attendant and she was quite personable with her sugary Mississippi dialect after she would tell us some stories in between the recorded messages talking about the history of the railroad, Lake Fontana, etc.
We had a nice stop at the Nantahala Outdoor Center although since we had some relatives with us in their mid-80s that moved slow, we didn't have time to spare after getting to the BBQ restaurant. Weather was perfect after the early morning thunderstorms moved out and it was a delightful day. In case you are wondering why the outbound journey takes 2 1/2 hours and the return only an hour is that outbound trip goes past the Nantahala Outdoor Center almost the entire length of the river so you can see the rafters/kayakers coming down the river, then the train stops on a siding while the engine moves to the other end of the train for the return trip. While we were in the Piedmont (Crown Class) car, I actually spent most of my time in the open-air or in the area between cars as I was taking a lot of pictures and the windows in the Piedmont car were casting reflections as well as a bit cloudy. Later in the summer with the heat I think the air conditioned cars would provide some relief. While I thought the ticket price was a bit steep after talking to some of the employees and understanding the costs of maintaining the train and the tracks, it really is reasonable. I highly recommend this trip

“Great way to spend a vacation day!”

We couldn't have asked for a better experience. The weather was perfect and the train ride was fun and relaxing. Beautiful scenery, friendly people, good food, and a little music. We rode in the first class Carolina Shine car where we sampled flavored moonshine and had a BBQ lunch. Our attendants Steven and Kara couldn't have been nicer and went out of their way to make it fun. Can't wait to go back!

“Carolina Shine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

What a fun way to travel on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad - in the Carolina Shine car! The Carolina Shine Moonshine tastings were great, the BBQ lunch was tasty & the pie & final tastings finished off the trip. The car has a full bar where they will make moonshine cocktails. This was the first weekend for the Carolina Shine & kudos to the Steven & the staff for running a smooth operation.
