We are avid fishermen and find Buxton to be central to all the great fishing locations on Hatteras Island. For the past 4 fishing trips to OBX, we have enjoyed staying at Cape Pines Motel which offers clean, comfortable rooms and friendly staff. Relative to other accommodations in this small village, the motel is located in a quieter section and we have never had issues with noise. Our room (two queen beds) was equipped with a small refrigerator and microwave and small TV with an amazing selection of channels. Fresh, delicious coffee is available in the office throughout the day. There is a large fish-cleaning station at the back of the property. The pool area looked very nice, although we were too busy fishing to check it out. Connor's Grocery is across the street and restaurants are nearby, including Rusty's Surf and Turf, Papanino's (good pizza and subs), and Diamond Shoals where you can get a hearty breakfast to start your day.

If you are visiting Buxton to fish, remember to check out http://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/off-road-vehicle-use.htm. ORV permits are now required and certain ramps (including Ramp 44 - the Point) were closed while we were there due to Piping Plover nesting (I could comment further - but I'll refrain). Red Drum Tackle Shop is always up to date on what folks are catching, so you may want to call them when planning your visit.

Whether you're visiting Buxton to fish or just enjoy the beautiful beaches with your family or friends, Cape Pines Motel is a winner. Check it out!

We loved our stay at Cape Pines! Very clean, well decorated rooms! The owner and staff are very friendly and helpful with any questions about the area and local attractions. We only stayed two nights, but wished we could have stay a week! The motel is in close driving distance to many yummy restaurants and most important for us... close to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and beach.
We enjoyed the comfortable bed, mini microwave, mini refrigerator and wifi.
This motel is pet friendly, but we had no issues with loud dogs or messes left behind on the property. We would highly recommend this motel to anyone open to the charm and friendliness of a locally owned business. I work at a similar family-owned motel and know personally the time, energy, and attention to details that it requires to successfully operate a motel.
We can't wait to go back next year!!!

Room Tip: They do have no pet, non smoking rooms in the main building if you are traveling without your pets...

Over the last 10 or 12 years, we've stayed in Buxton at least once and often twice per year. We've tried 4 of the available 7 motels and rank the Cape Pines as the best.

We travel in the "shoulder seasons" of spring and fall, either as a couple, with family or meeting friends. Cape Pines is always meticulously clean and comfortable. They frequently run off-season specials that let you extend your stay at a real bargain rate. Our most recent stay was with family in April 2014.

We always stay in a room, not a suite. Those rooms come with coffee maker, microwave and a dorm-sized refrigerator. Each room has a wired internet connection as well as a wireless connection that works if you can't leave work at home or want to research your day's activities. The fixtures/accessories are frequently updated and the beds are comfortable. The owners and staff are friendly and efficient. As has been mentioned by others, location is great being near the Gray House, across from the supermarket, easy walking distance to several eateries of all types. Each room is differently decorated, so you won't be waking up wondering which town you're in since this room doesn't look like the last 7 rooms you've stayed in. Each room has opening windows so you can enjoy the breezes or use the installed AC or heat as appropriate.

They've got gas grills, a pool, a dog play area and a table for cleaning fish if that's your thing.

My only caution is not waiting until the last minute to book your reservation as they are popular with those who know the area and can fill up with fishing tournaments, parasailing weekends or other events that bring in the visitors.

The owners have dogs of their own so you can say "hi" to them and maybe Heidi will entertain you with a ride on her skateboard!

Cape Pines is more than meets the eye!

Room Tip: The courtyard rooms are best for those with pets. There is no elevator so you need to let them know...

If not for trip advisor, I would never have booked this motel. From the road, it looks very old and dumpy. However, we enjoyed the room. It was very spacious and spotless. I loved the quilts on the very comfortable beds instead of the cheap bedspreads most cheaper hotels use. The room was HUGE compared to most standard Double Queen hotel rooms and I enjoyed the laminate flooring MUCH better than nasty carpet. There was a refrigerator that worked very well. Plenty of counter space for 2 suitcases AND a laptop, plus a large vanity in the separate dressing area. The bathroom itself was dated and cramped but spotless and sufficient.

We loved the location in the heart of Buxton practically around the corner from the lighthouse.

We stayed a Friday and Saturday night over Memorial Day weekend. The room was attached to the main building on the 2nd floor and was non-smoking but the ashtrays outside on the tables on the walkway were in constant use so we had some smoking annoyance. We had requested a downstairs unit but were given an upstairs. The room was large with two double beds—one was mushy and the other serviceable. It has been a while since my wife and I have slept in a double bed but we guess no queens or kings were available. There was a nice long counter for our computer (the wifi was quick, easy, and dependable) and our two small suitcases. The room had no couch or sofa but did have a round table and two chairs. A suitcase holder or two would have been helpful. The shower was a combo and small with a shower head out of the 1950s. It was slippery and they should install a safety bar. The commode was the old fashioned, cheap, round type and the toilet paper role was attached to the wall so close to your body that you could not use it without turning side ways. I had to go downstairs and use their public toilet—a bit of an inconvenience. The bathroom vanity had lots of counter space which was a plus but the lighting was so dim I had trouble shaving. Other lighting was dim as well although the one reading light was serviceable. The pool was adequate but needed refinishing and the pool furniture was good. No towels for the pool and no extra ones in the room, in fact, you get two bath towels, ONE hand towel, and two washcloths. No extra soap or shampoo just the one when you arrived and not replenished by housekeeping. A tip envelope was provided for housekeeping like on a cruise ship but we did not use it as we tip directly by leaving the money on our pillows. There is no coffee maker in the room although you can get coffee in the small reception area/office registration but not until they arrive in the morning. We had leftover coffee from the night before but could not heat it as there is no microwave. Tried to get coffee in the morning at 7:50 but they were closed and their sign said they did not open until 9:00. The next day we discovered a microwave next to the ice machine. Hangars could not be taken off of the rod so it was difficult to hang anything. I guess they have had hangar robberies in the past so that is why they attach them now—it seemed a bit cheesy. Layout of the building is bit awkward and they have traps everywhere you walk in doorways that are raised and can cause you to trip. This is a real danger. Design of the building makes the upstairs rooms hard to use as you are constantly going up and down the stars. Despite the tip housecleaning did not vacuum. Rails were rough and my wife got a splinter holding on to the rail. This is a dog hotel as many of the rooms have dogs but not the section we stayed in. Parking is OK. For the price we expected more but it is certainly serviceable. It seems to be designed for families, kids, and dogs.

Room Tip: Unless you like stairs—there is no lift—try to stay downstairs away from the dog rooms.

I booked this place thru BringFido.com; never been to the Outer Banks, read review, looked at photos, and went for it. This place exceeded my expectations! Great staff, wonderful rooms, and the whole place was charming. Lots of attention to detail. My dog loved it too. Very close to many things to do. I will be booking there again and again...

I visited this hotel several years ago in the off season (February 2008) while I was in RTP for two consecutive weeks of work. I wanted to be right near the Hatteras lighthouse (one of my favorite places), so I could be at the lighthouse for both sunset and sunrise. I didn't spend a lot of time in the room, but certainly liked the location. The quality of the hotel was fine also. The staff was very nice. The price was much less than I would have spent if I had stayed in RTP over the weekend.

Room Tip: Actual visit was February 2008!
