“Calabash at its best”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

We visited Captain John's twice last week... once on Monday, and again on Wednesday. The experiences were a little different. Everything from food to service was perfect on Monday, but not quite as good on Wednesday. We have been coming here for years, and have never had a bad experience. I am sorry to read that some other people have. Anyway, the Calabash style is lightly breaded and fried, and that is what Captain John's specializes in. Fried shrimp is fantastic, as is the pan fried shrimp which I tried for the fist time this year. You do have to take the tails off with the pan fried, which I don't like, but that's just me. Other family members really enjoyed the stuffed flounder, fried flounder, fish tacos, steak sandwich, and pork chops. Husband doesn't do seafood, and there are quite a few things for him to choose from on the menu. Hushpuppies were amazing on Monday. Not quite as good on Wednesday, but still better than most of the rest of the beach. Pina Coladas never disappoint. Our server on Monday was phenomenal - could not have asked for better service anywhere. On Wednesday, our server was a little odd: not very friendly, bumped us several times while pouring drinks, and actually rested the tea pitcher on the tops of our glasses when filling them. This is a major no-no, but we let it go this time. If we ever get assigned to him again, we will definitely request someone else immediately. This was an older, tall gentleman. Ironically, the new server still in training at some tables nearby had much better manners, held the pitcher well above the glasses he refilled, and overall gave much friendlier service than we had. Our Wednesday was unusual, and not a reflection of the kind of service we have come to expect over the years. Ratings would have been perfect based on Monday alone, but will be lowered a bit to reflect Wednesday. We will definitely be back for the seafood, the gorgeous views of the boats coming in to dock for the evening, the casual atmosphere, and for the entire Calabash experience.

“Tradition”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014 via mobile

I visit Calabash, NC, and Myrtle Beach, SC, with my family on a regular basis. It's a tradition to visit Captain John's Seafood House as it's always been delicious. Servers are friendly, complimentary hush puppies & honey butter are TASTY, and food is excellent if you want to enjoy freshly prepared seafood instead of an overpriced buffet with food that's been sitting around for God-knows-how-long.

“Disappointed with food”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014

We ate at Capt Johns per ca review by our son. He was wrong. We had the flounder plate and it was mushy as one would expect with frozen fish or processed fish. The cole slaw tasted ok but it was prepared by whipping it in a blender, presented as a green corn bread consistency side dish. All in all. I would not eat there again and am disappointed in that we have been eating at the cottage and. I planned a great night out. Did not happen.

“Cold food and untimely service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014 via mobile

This place came highly rated, but was a total façade. Food and drinks came out in waves, and most of our food was lukewarm to downright cold. Shrimp is a good value...if it's warm. Manager refuted every claim to cold food and shells in soup, claiming that was impossible due to it coming "prepackaged". Don't plan on hot food with a party of over 4. Need to hire a food runner at a minimum, along with more than one bartender during season.
