“Nice exchange of cash”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2012

I stayed at the High Hampton for a wedding with my bf and two close friends. The four of us split a double bed/two bed cabin. The cabin was over looking the lake and had an enclosed porch. The stay made me feel like I was one with nature. At least while I was in nature. Unfortunately, it rained making it hard to hike or canoe. You can take boating gear out on the lake if you like. Big Bonus. I would support anyone who wants to make this their site for a wedding or party... The staff was nice and seemed very eager to make your stay comfortable. The bathrooms had a slight mold condition, but I reasoned that they are very damp due to the lake. You can form your own opinions. Ashville is a little over an hour away as is the Anderson Cooper mansion. That is how people generally refer to it, is it not?

Thank you and yes you are right it rained! Weddings are so special here even when the weather may not be optimal. We did get it in though! Thank you again and hope that you return to enjoy the lakes and trails.

We had a great weekend in Cashiers. This part of the southeast US is a beautiful place to be, especially in the fall. The High Hampton Inn is equally beautiful - its website touts that High Hampton Inn is "a historic, family-friendly North Carolina mountain inn that has been bringing people together for generations."

High Hampton Inn has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The Inn itself is nestled comfortably along the banks of Hampton lake and at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. While we were there, several weddings were held on the banks of the lake, with majestic views of Rock Mountain. The setting is stunning, particularly in the fall with the crisp air and leaves beginning to change. There is much to do here - the area is chock full of outdoor activities. From the easy hike around the lake (great for young kids - our youngest is 5 and he had no trouble at all), to more strenuous longer hikes (they advise you plan for 4.5 hrs for the Chimney Rock hike), to whitewater rafting, kayaking on the lake, to golf and tennis, there is something for everyone.

The website itself does a nice job detailing the history, which gave us an early appreciation of the place: http://www.highhamptoninn.com/about.aspx. The huge great room with big 4-sided stone fireplace was a comfy setting that was complete with many secluded sitting areas, chess, checkers and other games. Great for reading a book or just relaxing.

The prices are steep here, however. $374 nightly rate for a small room. The room rates do include their Full American Plan (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), but there is no plan that I am aware of or is evident on their site that is without the meal plan. Rooms are considered rustic and are without televisions, phones, and air conditioning, which is interesting, but really also means you don't spend much time in the rooms. We had a standing reservation for the 3 meals, so always had the same table. Food was served buffet style and was neither really good or very bad. Typical southern fare - fried chicken potatoes and sides for lunch; prime rib and sides for dinner; typical American breakfast with omelette stations. Service here was mediocre to poor, mainly because there seemed to be too few servers for the people covered. The staff was always friendly and helpful, however.

High Hampton Inn is a true piece of American history, complete with rustic surroundings and outdoor activities. Downtown Cashiers is great (Cornucopia is a great lunch spot with open patio & good food), as is nearby Highlands (trendy, good shopping, food, etc). So - all in all it was a good experience. If I go again, I will probably look to rent a nearby home for a weekend and utilize the facilities at High Hampton Inn. Some folks may have a hard time justifying the price to stay here for mediocre food that you have to pay for, mediocre service, and small rooms with no air, tv, or radio.

Room Tip: There are cottages on the property and there are rooms at the Inn. We stayed in the Inn, which was f...

We are seasonal folk, and probably have driven past the High Hampton hundreds of times. We went this morning for breakfast, with 10 other people, and it truly is a destination.

The food and service was perfect, as was the price...$14.+. The setting was just the best. Casual, but elegant. After breakfast we lingered a bit by the four sided fireplace and then went downstairs to the lounge to enjoy local art. From there we walked outside and found almost utter enchantment.

The mountain view reflecting on the water.., surrounded by trees and flowers I found to be one of the prettiest places on earth.

What more can I say ? Close to perfection.

OK, do not go here if you are looking for a five star hotel. The High Hampton Inn is a wonderful wooden rustic hotel in a beautiful setting. No A/C, T.V.'s, phones in room, room service and the tavern (bar) is only open from 5 P.M. until 10 P.M. Doesn't sound too good does it? Well, that's just not true. It is a very relaxing, warm beautiful place with superbly friendly service. It's a little expensive for what you get but it's full of history and very, very relaxing. Cottages are available with fireplaces. Cell phones don't always work here. So, like I said...if you want the five star hotel will everything then go to one of the newer places. If you want a peace and quiet and a piece of history and beauty...go to High Hampton.

Room Tip: I presume the rooms away from the front entrance are somewhat quieter since often your windows will...

My wife and I recently spent a weekend at High Hampton with our seventeen year-old daughter. My last visit was in the summer of 1965. I had arranged our room through the website and when we arrived the front desk did not have a record of our Friday to Sunday reservation. A bit of quick searching on their part showed they had our reservation but reflected a Sunday to Tuesday booking. The young woman quickly righted matters, reviewed which room we had been assigned to and consulted colleagues to see if there were a better room for three folks. Soon we were re-assigned and shown to our "cottage" (really a section of cottage.) The room was rustic and charming, spacious with a beautiful view overlooking the lake and a tremendous sense of peace and privacy. We dutifully dressed for dinner and made our way to the lodge where a cheery fire was burning in one of the four massive stone fireplaces. On a mid-September evening it was wonderful. In the dining room the buffet was laid out and service was much as described by other reviewers. Phillipine servers tried hard but missed the mark often based upon linguistic and cultural differences. Nonetheless, the sincere efforts felt welcoming. The Food at Breakfast was wonderful, lunch was adequate and dinner had hits and misses. My family is a bit foodie so I knew it may be a challenge but the charm of the place and the retro nature made the buffet tolerable. Would I happily pay more for better food? Yes but more important to me is that High Hampton survive and if this model works it is ok with me - actually the whole family loved it for all the reasons of charming, retro and rustic culture. Aside from dining room service the entire staff was warm, welcoming and gracious. There is simply something about the place that makes you feel you are back in 1950 and it is so unbelievably peaceful. It seems ideal for multi-generational family retreats with something for everyone. We met a thirty-something mother of three who was there with her in-laws and the three generations seemed to eat it up. I was gratified to hear her say this was their fourth visit and every time the in-laws propose a change in venue the (thirty-something) kids and and grandchildren reject it and want to return to High Hampton.

It is not for everyone but if it is for you it is unique and a national treasure. It is so peaceful and relaxing. The lousy cell service and lack of telephones and internet is a dream. If only the tv were gone from the main lodge it would be perfect. Thanks High Hampton - we'll be back and we'll be bringing family.

Room Tip: Simply ask the desk for advice.

High Hampton is blessed with a picture perfect setting. Our family loved not having computers, TV's and media everywhere. We also liked the tradition of dressing for dinner. Our only complaint is that the rooms need to be cleaned more thoroughly and are in dire need of redecorating and lighting.

Thank you for your review and comments. We are glad that you appreciate the tranquility of this property. You might also appreciate that we are indeed looking into the rooms lighting needs. Over the years guests have moved lights for their particular needs causing darkness in other areas. A complete lighting review is underway. Thank you again and we hope that you visit soon.

Retro, rustic, and relaxing in a country paced atmosphere. We have been here several times in the past. The beds are comfortable, the cottages are great, with fireplaces. We stayed in Hampton, a two bedroom with a joint living room cottage. The Inn was built in the the early 1920's, has no phones (some spotty cel reception), air conditioning or TV's in the rooms-on purpose. Shockingly there is wi-fi in the lodge lobby. Meals buffet style are on the American Plan, afternoon tea, and milk and cookies after supper. Our favorite was prime rib and mango shrimp. The inn is surrounded by a golf course, a few tennis courts, 10-15 cabins, a honeymoon suite and two floors of rooms in the inn. There is a good bar, deli at the pro shop, a lake, hiking trails on a 1400 acre estate. It has a family atmosphere. If you want to unplug and recharge check website.
