“What a dump!”
Reviewed 30 November 2011

This 'hotel' is an absolute hole! I use the term 'hotel' very lightly. It is more of a motel that you see on american films. The room smelled damp and the door was not secure at all. We spent approximately 10 minutes in the hotel before we told them we could not and would not stay there. Only dogs should be allowed to stay in this dump, but then again I wouldn't allow my dogs to stay there, they are used to a much better standard of living!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else! The residence Inn just up the road is amazing!

This is a very nice, clean hotel that allows dogs. There is a dog fee of $40 is added to the cost of the room. This $40 is added one time no matter if you stay one night or a week. We would have given 5 stars, if the people at the front desk had been a little friendlier. There is a shuttle that goes to the hospital and to downtown Chapel Hill, but we didn't use it because the last pick up is 8 pm. We would stay here again. It's very close to everything we wanted to see in Chapel Hill. There was a small refridgerator and a microwave.

The location is fine if you want to be near Chapel Hill, but the room is like 1960s motels. There is no elevator and all rooms open to the outside. So, there is noise from the nearby highway and noise from neighboring rooms to boot. There is little value here for the money. They say it's been updated, but a newer bedspread doesn't mask the smoke and mildew. The front desk staff were nice - that's the only asset this motel has.

We just returned to the University Inn for the second time in six months, and found it very pleasant on both visits. The Inn is graciously arranged around a courtyard with the pool and a gazebo shaded with lovely large trees, a great place to relax when you're not in the room.

The lobby is large and pleasant, with coffee and tea available alll day. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are reasonably large, quite clean and comfortable, furnished with fridge and microwave. I know you can say this about many motels, but we have had a very good feeling here both times.

True, it is located at a busy intersection. But the upside of that is that just across the road you find a Wholefoods and a Starbucks, and it's conveniently located. If I need to return to Chapel Hill, I will stay here again, again.

We just returned from a visit to the Chapel Hill area where we stayed at Chapel Hill University Inn. Upon check in the night desk clerk was friendly and meet all expectations with a smile on her face. Our room fronted a busy road that had night construction going on so it was a bit loud. I realize CHUI can't help that but it's worth mentioning if you are going to stay there.

The room was your average budget rate room. The bedding was dated as well as most of the light fixtures. The big flat screen TV was nice.

The bathroom was typical for this price point. We did find hair in our bath towels.

All in all the room was mediocre at best and we probably wouldn't stay there again.

The biggest caution I would pass along would be to avoid their onsite restaurant. Time-Out Sports bar is located in the lobby. This is a sports bar so I would suggest you venture off site for breakfast.

We were the only people in there for breakfast so that should have been a sign. The waitress was pleasant but her shirt was covered in bleach stains. They really should consider some other option for wait staff attire.

The front desk clerk had given us a coupon for a discounted rate breakfast biscuit with coffee. When we ordered that special we were told they didn't have biscuits because the oven was broken. Ok, things happen...we ordered toast with our meals.

When breakfast arrived the coffee was very bitter but we were able to disguise that with enough creamer and sugar.
The toast was cold so forget putting butter on it. The grits were rock solid and could have used much more liquid when they were cooked...or maybe they were left over from the previous morning? The first two bites of eggs were ok. The third bite contained I don't know what but it was the most horrible taste I have experienced in a long time. I spit it out on the plate and covered it up with a napkin. At that point all that was left on the plate that didn't make me shudder was the bacon. I ate one piece of bacon and all was well. I picked up the second piece of bacon and take a bite only to be greeted with hair on the bacon. That was about all we could take so we paid the bill and left.

Stay here if you are looking for a budget priced room in area but avoid the restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the busy road. Maybe behind the pool area would have been quieter. If you...
