Owner description: This is a brand-new art museum in center city Charlotte, N.C. I found the museum to be interesting, but with significant limitations for serious lovers of modern art.

“I found this museum laughable”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

Actually we laughed quite hard while here after viewing one of the pieces. I honestly do not understand why this museum inhabits such a large space; most of the floors were quite sparse. I generally love architecture and the exhibit on the top floor was beautiful but only held my attention but so long. Speaking of the third floor, we accidentally took a covered drink up with us, which the lady at the desk said nothing about, and were immediately greeted by a young man who couldn’t even exchange pleasantries before telling us that we could not have drinks up there. It was an accident and an oversight on our behalf but did not warrant his abrasiveness. All in all we were in and out in 30 minutes and see no reason to go back.

“Wonderful small modern art museum”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

A small but excellent modern art museum. At the time we were there the museum had an exhibit based on the architect who had designed the building, his other buildings and the works of art which had inspired him. Both of us found it fascinating. If you're in Charlotte, this is definitely a must-see.

“A gorgeous artistic oasis in uptown...”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

We spent about an hour in the Bechtler on a recent weekend visit to Charlotte. The building itself is stunning, an architect's dream. The exhibit at the time we visited (the works of architect Mario Botta) particularly appealed to my boyfriend, who is getting his degree in architecture. The exhibit was fascinating to even a non-designer like me, made up of photographs, sketches, and scale models of Botta's work.

The best part of the museum was Claude, the docent/security guy who shared his wisdom and enthusiasm for the work with us. What a great idea, to let security people actually interact with guests in an informal and personal way. His presence really enhanced our visit and understanding of the exhibit.

The rest of the collection is small and intimate, with an outdoor space to enjoy and a great little gift shop and cafe. Combining this museum with the MINT (right next door) and the Harvey Gantt Cultural Center (down the block) would make for an incredible cultural fieldtrip.

“Uptown Jewel”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

The Bechtler is a smaller jewel of a museum located in Uptown Charlotte. As its name implies, the focus here is modern art, specifically mid-20th Century. Think names like Picasso, Calder, Tinguely, LeCorbusier plus many more. The post World War II School of Paris theme/style is particularly strong here. The collection here is largely that of the Bechtler family, which gives some insight as to the nature of one or more collectors, why they collect, what they collect, & the many relationships surrounding this endeavor.

My wife & I spent a couple of hours here to see the Mario Botta exhibit. Botta, a world renown architect, designed the Bechtler Museum building. The exhibit was presented in three basic sections, first being about the architect. The next section presented several of his designs in black & white photos, along
with wood models, cut away in one section to reveal portions of the interiors. The final section titled 'Encounters' is a visual presentation of work by artists of differing media who were influential in one way or another to Botta, many being close friends. You can begin to see some early shapes & forms that will eventually become part of the building design.

This is one of only two of his designs built in the United States, making the building a destination in its own right as being of architectural interest. Note the cantilevered fourth floor exhibition space & soaring glass atrium. It is located in the Levine Center for the Arts cultural district. In addition to art exhibitions, the museum presents live jazz, moderism & film, guest lecturers, family days and is physically connected to the Knight Theater.
