Had the sushi entree. The fish used for the nigiri appeared fresh and the rolls were good. It was just a wee bit pricey but not outrageously so.

We are not sushi connoisseurs by any means, but we enjoyed dining at Mai Japanese Restaurant. We had the Japanese eggroll appetizer, a Salmon Bento box (which comes with veggies, fried rice, half of a california roll, etc.), and a Hibachi chicken entree, which came with a salad, miso soup, and seaweed salad. Everything was delicious, and it was fun to try a variety of foods! The prices are reasonable. The restaurant was half full, and the service was very fast. The appetizer arrived within 5 minutes after we ordered, and the entrees were there before we finished the appetizer. Again, I can't comment as to the quality of the sushi, but we enjoyed everything we ordered!

We are always looking for great sushi places -- its our family's favorite dinner take out option. Ordered 4 people worth of sushi and a couple of hibachi combo dinners last night. Ordered at 6:40p (was entered into their system at 6:48 according to the sales ticket) and told it would be 15 minutes. Showed up at 7:05 and they told me the food wasn't ready. Waited around until 7:38 when they finally finished making the sushi rolls. This entire time the hibachi dinners were boxed up and sitting on the counter, so needless to say, by the time we got them home everything hot was stone dead cold and inedible. There is no reason making two sushi rolls should have taken nearly an hour from time of order.

Just plain poor, disinterested service.

This review is specifically about the Mai location at the corner of Colony and Rea.

Anthony Bourdain once said: "Always compliment a sushi chef on his rice." Well I must say you have to go beyond rice. While the cool thing is to track down a novel sushi restaurant with their hallmark roll or signature eel offering, once you come upon one unexpectantly it is a true reward. This day we happened upon Mai Japanese Restaurant on a business trip. The lunch offerings were fun, the presentation of the sushi were awesome, the sashimi were just OK and plain however, but I opted for them regardless as I was watching my rice intake.
