“If you love old architecture then this spot is for you”
Reviewed 14 March 2013

Lovely old building with great southern charm. We thouroughly enjoyed our stay and had a great, full, made to order breakfast and then looped around the gardens. Even though it was cold and only daffodils were out the gardens still made a good impression. We'd love to come back later in the spring to see it for real.

We had a large room with screened in porch and massive bathroom with double showers and two person jacuzzi. A comfy big bed and free wifi fit the bill for us. We enjoyed wandering the halls and reading the history. 5 stars for sure.

Be aware that they are more of an inn than a B&B. We didn't mind, but I know a lot of B&B guests are there for that homey touch and you probably aren't going to get it here. For example, there isn't an owner/host. It is staffed by employees (who were great) but they aren't going to entertain you with stories about how they got into the business or whatever. Also, they seem to do a lot of wedding and corporate events. Again, it didn't bother us, but each time we walked through a certain hall, there was a new couple going over wedding reception plans and one whole wing of the building was set aside for a morning breakfast business meeting of some corporation. We didn't even know they were there until we were outside in the garden and saw the full parking lot and looked through a window to see the classic "I'm going to shoot myself if this guy shows me another powerpoint slide" faces. So I don't consider it a problem, but you might. Now that I think about it, if we had arrived earlier in the evening, we would have wondered why there wasn't a downstairs living room with big sofas and a warm fire. The reason would have been because what by rights ought to be a common area, is set up with conference room tables.

Anyway, we had a great time.

Room Tip: The Dowd suite was fabulous. I read later that this is typically the honeymoon suite but I am happy...

I can not begin to tell you how elegant and beautiful The Duke Mansion is. Fabulous breakfast, wonderful screened porch, huge bedroom and marble bathroom! The setting is in the middle of the Myers Park residential neighborhood so the Mansion is surround by beautiful, stately homes. The grounds are expansive and manicured! I can only imagine the lifestyle of Doris Duke when this was her private residence. A step back in lovely southern history!

We spent New Years Eve at Duke Mansion, and loved it! It's a beautiful house with well-maintained grounds. The service was extraordinary! When we returned from dinner, we asked the man at the front desk for ice in our room. To our surprise, it was awaiting us when we got upstairs. We still don't know how he did it so quickly, but it was very impressive!!!
We enjoyed the breakfast, which included eggs, potatoes, waffles, sausage, pastries, and the most tasty bacon I've had in a long time.
The neighborhood around the mansion is beautiful, as well. If you stay, be sure to take a walk or drive around the neighborhood to check it out.

Best B & B in Charlotte area, make time to checkout the nearby historic myers park neighborhood. Be sure to take a camera. Short drive to uptown Charlotte and South park area for great restaurants and museums.

Room Tip: Get a room with a porch!!

My husband and I were looking forward to a quiet, romantic night at this beautiful mansion. The parking lot was full when we arrived because of a community board meeting and there isn't anyone to help with bags. Our room was beautiful and large, and the porch was wonderful, except for the constant sound of several leaf blowers and the insane amount of dust being blown around. This went on for the entire afternoon until I called downstairs at 4:45, when my allergies were overwhelmed and my head aching from the noise! They did finally cease, but by then it was dark and too cold to sit outside.

In the morning we thought, we would finally walk around the gardens, but the leaf blowers started up again. There was a lot of remodeling of the gardens going on, so mud was a problem. If we would have been warned, it might have been nice.

The afternoon cookies were a nice touch, but there weren't any cups for the coffee and the hot water for the tea was cold. The restaurant was not open, but there was a buffet in the morning.

Perhaps the future will hold better management and a quiet and clean place.

We recently spent two nights at the Duke Mansion while visiting Charlotte for the first time. We
chose it because it was ideally located for walking in the historic Myers Park area, one which
we especially wished to see. We also had a mid-week special on our room. We were not disappointed in our choice, despite a bit of room heating problems our first evening. With a
sharp temperature drop our lack of heat was a bit uncomfortable, but a portable radiator got
us through and they got things ironed out the next day, The room was small, with a double bed
versus a queen, but was nicely appointed and had full amenities. The breakfasts were well done, with a number of menu options. It was not speedy, but the pace allowed conversation with our fellow guests which we always consider a plus for B&B stays. The building and grounds are lovely and as we hoped, the location was super for Myers Park sightseeing.
While you could easily catch a bus downtown on nearby Providence, we chose to walk to the
downtown area. It was a good distance but not too strenuous for those who like walking.
While we could have stayed closer to the downtown area, we were glad we chose the Duke
Mansion. The staff was most helpful, and assisted in our walking and locating our evening
dinner locations as our GPS was having problems. While the primary focus of the Duke seems
to be on attracting business events, travelers and larger events, it treats other guests with
attentive, courteous service.

This is far more than a homely B and B . We realised this the minute that we turned into the drive and caught our first glimpse of the elegant building surrounded by gorgeous gardens. Our room was huge with an equally spacious bathroom and the sleeping porch complete with swing seats and rocking chairs was a marvellous place to relax and chill out. We took full advantage of the hot drinks and cookies available on the landing.
As it is a B and B there is no restaurant, but it is only a few minutes walk from a road with a selection of restaurants, cafes and a superb delicatessen with a menu of take away food so long that it took us half an hour to read it and almost as long again to choose. We took our selection back to our room and had a delicous picnic out on the sleeping porch.
The one disappointment was the breakfast. Hotel information states that a gourmet breakfast is served every day. We were expecting a menu with a choice of items freshly prepared and served. What we found was a breakfast buffet with a reasonable choice of cereals and juice alongside big serving dishes of scrambled eggs, sausages etc which had clearly been sitting around for a while. The pastries and muffins were les than fresh and there was no bread of any description-I found this surprising as there was such a good bakery a few minutes down the road. I would expect this sort of breakfast at one of the big chain hotels, certainly not at such a place which in all other respects offered excellent standards of accommodation and service.
