Our plane landed early, and, based on the many Trip Advisor excellent reviews we quickly headed to Upstream for an early dinner. We arrived at 4 pm, however, the dining room was not scheduled to open until 5 pm. No problem, the maitre d' suggested their lounge and said you can order anything off the dinner menu. We first ordered a sampler of various sourced raw oysters to find which source that tasted best to us and then ordered those for the next half-dozen. - - the oysters are FRESH FRESH FRESH !!! Next we ordered the Mussels - - with a different but excellent sauce made with smoked tomatoes, garlic, and “15 different herbs and spices”. A good start, but since our drinks were made well (and, generous), we went forward and ordered a second round plus we ordered the “Steamed Shrimp Potstickers” and “Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes” - - mmmm good !!!! Our bartender/waiter was helpful navigating us through the menu all while he was prepping for the 5:00 dinner service. The Sushi station is also in the lounge, however, we had our fill. If you are like us and just passing through Charlotte, or, if you are lucky enough to live nearby - - Upstream is a must place to go !

Upstream is a nice change of pace for seafood restaurants in the area. There are a lot of Asian flavors & choices, as well as non-Asian style dishes. There is also a full sushi menu. We tried the oyster appetizer, which featured some fresh, tasty Canadian oysters. The spicy rock shrimp lettuce wraps were also very good, but not terribly spicy. The togarashi dusted tuna on a rice cake bed was a nice entree choice with a different flavor than the usual sesame seed type tuna dish. Dessert was a deconstructed Japanese style dense, flour less chocolate cake. It was almost like chocolate fudge. It was quite enjoyable.

The service was just ok. We noticed that a neighboring table got some very detailed descriptions and explanations without asking. Our waiter was professional and helpful, but not very attentive, and did not check on our drink status.

As a side note, I think it might be helpful and more attractive if the main dining room had some better lighting or larger hanging fixtures. The glasswork ceiling is so beautiful in one part of the dining room, but the entrance area could use some sprucing up.

All in all, we would go back and give it another try.

We had a Friday night dinner here during Queen's Feast Week. We were shown to our table immediately upon arrival. It was difficult making a choice among all the appetizers and entrees. The crab cake appetizer is very good as is the line caught flounder entree. The fish was perfectly cooked and stayed hot until I finished it. Our waiter, Mark, was very attentive. The manager's circulated around the dining room to check on customers and meals. The only problem we had was the noise level. The tables are quite close together and it is hard to carry on a conversation with your fellow diner.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience during restaurant week. The wait staff was prompt, professional and attentive. The entire menu was available for this special week. Options were well explained to us "first timers". The seafood we enjoyed was well prepared and seasoned. The atmosphere was upbeat and energetic.

This was our first visit to Upstream, which we've wanted to try since moving here. We finally went during Charlotte Restaurant Week. Food, staff and wine list were exceptional. We could have licked the bowl clean with the lobster bisque. My flounder was perfect and paired well with the truffle risotto. The flourless chocolate torte was a decadent way to end the meal. Being a California girl, I am always on the lookout for a chardonnay from Edna Valley. Hubby's beef tenderloin was perfect for a beef lover. And I loved that they used their normal menu for Restaurant Week. If you're going, be sure and get reservations.
