Every time I am on I26 near Columbia/Tryon I come by here to eat. Awesome country cooking; great atmosphere and very clean. Highly recommended!

Having lived in Atlanta and eaten at the Varsity regularly, I was craving a chili slaw dog plate when I first came to Calvert's Kitchen. Assuming the waitress didn't know what that southern delicacy was, I spelled out the construction method with mustard on the bottom and off she went. A friendly gentleman in a baseball cap delivered the two hotdog plate special with two sides and said he had to come see who had ordered the special chili slaw dogs because the last person who ordered them like that was Andy Rooney of 60 minutes fame who was lost in the area and stumbled upon Calvert's quite by accident. The catfish and chicken livers are also great finished with a slice of coconut cake all washed down with iced tea. If you remember ordering a cheeseburger at your drugstore in the South in the 60's, they still make them here! For the uninitiated Yankee transplants, this place is a study in Southern food and culture

Calvert's offers some of the best home-cooking in the area. The menu has a good variety with sandwiches, salads, and dinners, with several specials available each day. The atmosphere is casually comfortable, a good place to meet and catch up with friends or have a good home-cooked meal!

I enjoyed eating at Calvert's and would return. It's spacious and clean with high ceilings and 17 ceiling fans for added comfort. The staff was friendly but the waitress did not bring the specials to my attention. They do have a 'specials' board on the wall offering free iced tea with any special when paying with cash. The tea was top notch as was the stewed tomatoes and okra. The tomatoes and okra was about the best I've ever had, including my own! I also had the barbecue sandwich. It was really big and really tasty. Prices were in the $5 to $10 range. Tea was $1.50 if not part of the special.
