I was inspired to post this after running across a mostly negative post from the same month we were there. It was like day and night! We had such a SUPER positive time with NO complaints.
Every year we strive to get our extended family together for a week. I try to find someplace new for the grands to visit. Making memories. I had never been to the Outer Banks but had heard fabulous things.
Yes. It was worth going. Yes. It is a really long trek.. from probably anywhere!
Family review: BEST EVER
So six children and grands with in-laws and a beloved nephew and niece. We were 33 strong for our Grannie Camp at the Mark Twain house this July of 2017. ( I am the grannie!)
"Campers" ranged from two 4 month olds to my mom at 89. PLUS, this is a pet friendly house!! How great is that? (the only rule is NO pets in the pool!)
It was the most amazing week. The house was thoughtfully built over three floors with divisions of public and private space. We had the best time with the spa & pool. My inventive sons created a water volley ball net out of pool cleaning equipment.
(I couldn't fit the water volley ball set into packed tight with every thing else in the back of the going to Grannie Camp pick up truck!)
It is a beach place. So, yeah, there are bugs involved! One can say this is North Carolina, but it is still the South.
So..One of the first "jobs" that the grands figured out they need to do every morning was go scoop out the frogs from the pool! A great family memory! This is bookended w/ watching the Corolla horses come munch their way under the walkway by the house! The horses just ignored peeps as they ate around all sides of the house!
There is a "tiki" hut bar by the pool. The walkway leads down to the 4x4 beach. We had planned ahead and brought pop up tents for extra shade in the pool area.
We assigned each family a Cook Night. Competitive fun that was so easy to pull off with the wonderful Viking stove & double fridges/ovens and more cooking utensils that one could shake a stick at! YES they have big (big!) crock pots!! And dishes and two dishwashers. We didn't know that there is a grocery delivery service available! Find out about that!!
NOTE: you need to bring in all your supplies. READ the instructions. AND the cleaning crew will make good use of your "Don't want to take back home" !!
There is a piano in the great room. It was used on the family Talent Night. And the small grandchildren loved it so much that we had to limit the playing time!
Our teens & tweens LOVED the media room. Also, it was a fave for the dads w/ the babies to go curl up on mornings after as a quiet dark spot when they were assigned baby duty while the moms slept in. Mmm... what else? laundry on the top & bottom floors.
Each master bedroom on the 3rd floor has its own private bath. NOTE: some baths are tubs and some walk-ins. I should have assigned my mom to a walk-in shower rather than getting seduced by how pretty her room was!
The whole middle/ 2nd floor is the "public" space. Enough tables that we could ALL sit for supper. And space to do puzzles. And play chess. And couches to take naps.
The first, bottom floor has a combo of jack & jill family bedroom /bathroom setups w/ more master bedroom bath combos. ALL leading out to the deck that goes out to the pool area. Check out the schematics.
John Daddy staked out a place on the bottom level by the pool table to read -- this is the place with access to the pool/spa/beach/tiki hut. He says he saw everyone going in and out. His only observation was that it was not as quiet a late night spot for reading as he had planned because the younger males kept finding ways to be musical!
We had a bit of trouble w/ the elevator at the beginning. That was addressed as soon as could be. Also, when we got there, the thermostat was cranked so far down it was freezing! Again, addressed the very next day!
Is there any drawback to the Mark Twain? It is on the 4x4 beach. Any guest should realize that means that it is Mad Max Fury Road to get there. But.. that, too, makes for some good family memories.
What else? They did have a 4x4 available for rental AND parking free parking space for family w/out 4x4. Great people to work with.
totally recommend this for a wonderful family memory.
We loved The Mark Twain!!! We've rented large homes in Corolla for the past 10 or so years, but have usually been disappointed by the time we left. With the larger homes they tend to have more things that can go wrong. That makes sense and I understand that. That's where we felt The Mark Twain was Above Average. The things (minor) we had to deal with were dealt with quickly and efficiently! Shane is the caretaker and he was always smiling and eager to help. The only house we ever rented that had a Full Time Caretaker. For that reason alone, WE RECOMMEND THIS HOME!
The large bedrooms and open spaces were all fabulous. The huge windows everywhere gave you such a good feeling of being away from it all. The views are spectacular and we just loved it.
We will be back and already booked for 2019. We come about every other year for our family reunion.
We used every bedroom for our extended family. Modern bathroom (walk in shower) for us and large spacious bedroom with a door to the outside for our canines. Loved the hot tub, warmed pool, outdoor bar area, and the large grills for cooking outside. Raised walk over the sand dunes to the beach and a spot to wash off your feet. Wild Mustangs walked right up to the porches. Definitely drop tire pressure for 4x4 at or below 20 psi for all tires. We got stuck a couple of times trying to go over the hill to the house. Cell phone service is spotty, but could get a signal by the pool. Mark Twain House had a fresh water making system that was so great. Park non 4x4 vehicles at the realtor firm office for a fee, and shared rides out to the house. Get all your groceries before you head for the house.
