My daughter and I enjoyed our stay from the moment we arrived. This was our first Bed and Breakfast so we were anxious. We were greeted with our names on a welcome sign and given a personal tour upon arrival. The staff was friendly, but not intrusive. The guide showed us the lovely grounds that include croquet, bocce ball, a fire pit in front of the koi pond, mountain trails and relaxing seating areas. The Inn has a separate building that houses the television complete with movie library. The Chalett houses volumnes of books and board games. European chocolates await you if you you desire, as well as a small refriderator filled with soft drinks that guests can access.
We stayed in two different rooms during our two day stay. The first was very small. We enjoyed the largest room very much with its quaint porch that allowed us to swing and take in the mountain view and cool crisp air. This room also allowed us to take meals at the table in our room which we enjoyed on one occasion. We ordered the assorted cheese and meat plate for two and ate it for two meals. The food was excellent. My sweet husband ordered the birhtday cake, flowers and sparkling apple juice that the Inn offers and I was impressed with the deliciousness of the chocolate cake.
The Wards who own the Inn are very knowledgeable about the area and have printed maps awaiting you for adventures to Cherokee, whitewater rafting or whatever adventure you desire.

We did not actually stay here, as we were so disturbed by the long, incredibly steep, horribly rutted and potholed, unpaved driveway leading to the place. Driving directions from the web-site were extremely confusing, which didn't help our state of mind when we were faced with a 45 degree uphill obstacle course. The owner was very insulted that we dared to criticize her directions or her driveway and told us to go away, which we did. Don't consider this place unless you are part mountain goat!

Re: Disappointing by DoverDinosaur

Re: ". . . we were so disturbed by the long, incredibly steep, horribly rutted and potholed, unpaved driveway leading to the place."

Our driveway is paved. A portion of it was paved in concrete when we purchased the property, and we paved the remainder of the driveway with BST in May, 2008. BST (alternating layers of an epoxy tar and gravel) is what the NC Dept. of Transportation puts on many of the State's mountain roads; it may look like gravel rather than paving to someone use to concrete and blacktop since the final top layer is pea gravel. This type of pavement gives better traction in wet and wintertime weather.

There are no potholes in the paved driveway; there is a speed bump and a speed "dip" in the drive.

Our parking area is gravel (again no potholes), because we have been planning to enlarge it and change the grade leading a newer parking area. When those changes are completed the parking area will be paved also.

Re: ". . . faced with a 45 degree uphill obstacle course."

Obviously our driveway is not a 45 degree slope: we would be out of business if it were because only four-wheeled vehicles - and then not all four-wheeled vehicles - could climb such a grade. Our driveway rises only 240 feet in a little less than 3/10ths of a mile. Remember we are in the mountains and the closest B&B to the main entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Re: ". . . Driving directions from the web-site were extremely confusing, "

Our website has a Directions page that has:

- a map showing where we are in relation to the InterState and US Highways (which can be blown up as well as downloaded)

- a detailed map showing the last four miles to us (which also can be blown up as well as downloaded)

- written directions from the closest major cities in all four cardinal directions, i.e. Asheville & Charlotte NC; Atlanta, GA; Knoxville & Chattanooga, TN; as well as from the closest town, Dillsboro.

- our GPS location.

We also have a Scenic Directions page on our website with written directions for a scenic drive to us from all four cardinal directions, i.e. Asheville & Charlotte NC; Gatlinburg, Knoxville & Chattanooga, TN.

Our brochure has the same two maps as on our website.

If you use Google, Yahoo or Bing and enter "directions to the chalet inn" our directions page come up.

If you use Google Maps and enter "the chalet inn, nc" as your destination (even with no street or city address) Google Maps directions take you right to our front door; using the same "the chalet inn, nc" on Mapquest gives you directions to the start of our driveway.

Re: Signage

The reviewer failed to mention that where you turn off the four lane divided US Highway 74/441 onto the rural State paved road there are 6 foot wide luminous NC Dept. of Transportation Highway Signs (colored blue - the standard color for accommodations) for our B&B. These signs are not generic, e.g. "accommodation," "hotel," "Bed and Breakfast," etc., rather, they have our name "The Chalet Inn" (our name is the only name on the sign) as well as an arrow pointing in the direction which you are to turn off the four lane divided US Highway. At each of the three turns/intersections from US Highway 74/441 to our Inn's driveway (a total of only 1.6 miles) there are similar follow-on luminous NC Dept. of Transportation signs saying "The Chalet Inn" as well as an arrow pointing in the direction which you turn. We lease all these signs from the State - at considerable expense - to assist our guests especially at night since our rural area has no street lights. The reviewer arrived in daylight.

The reviewer failed to mention that when they called us saying they couldn't find us, they were unable to tell us where they were. With no starting point, we were unable to talk them to us. We asked them to call us when they arrived at a road intersection or a point that they could describe. They hung up frustrated and did not call back.

Re: "The owner was very insulted that we dared to criticize her directions or her driveway and told us to go away . . ."

We could tell they were frustrated and upset - as were we frustrated at being unable to "talk" them to us when they called lost - and thus tried our best to welcome them warmly, but they refused to even come in and look at their reserved accommodations.

Re: The reviewer's accuracy

We are and have been for some time a AAA 3 Diamond rated property. As you are probably aware, the AAA rating/inspection criteria includes the property's parking facilities and access thereto. Our latest AAA inspection was on June 11, 2009, 5 days before the reviewer's arrival. That inspection reaffirmed our 3 Diamond rating with no comments recommending any improvements. If the reviewer's comments regarding the driveway were accurate there is no way we would could have received that rating.

The Chalet Inn is a very unique and beautiful bed and breakfast, and the innkeepers - the Wares - are absolutely darling. Our room was super clean (and I'm a freak about cleanliness), and the view from the balcony was gorgeous. Also, the breakfast is AMAZING. :)

My husband and I took a vacation to North Carolina and found this very charming bed and breakfast, The Chalet Inn. George and Hanneke Ware, the innkeepers, were excellent hosts and their property is beautiful. We enjoyed a hike around their property and finished the evening around the firepit near their pond. In the morning, Hanneke made an INCREDIBLE breakfast with homemade turnovers. This is a real gem if you ever find yourself in the area.

We were delighted with the Chalet Inn. We were greeted upon arrival by our wonderful hosts. They really know how to treat a visitor. We always felt so much at home. The European touches were great. It was like being in Switzerland or Germany. You could not ask for better hospitality. The location was perfect. Set up in the mountain but not too far. The views were great. All the rooms had outside balconies. The rooms are small but this is typical of most of the Bed and Breakfast inns that we have stayed in the past. You'll love hiking around the grounds. Breakfast was by candlelight in the dining room or you could have your tray bought to your room. Wonderful either way.

I hesitate writing a review about this Inn because I don't want it to become more popular!! It is the absolute perfect place to stay in North Carolina. It is right in the middle of everything, yet it is quiet. The best part about the Inn is the fact that George and Hanneke Ware are so good to their guests. They are always attentive to needs. When you stay with them, you feel as if you are with family. They live on the property so if you need them, they are right there. They welcome you with a hug, a smile, and know you by name. They truly enjoy having guests. I've stayed at 5 different B and B's. The owners of all the other inns were distant and communicated through hired help. At the Chalet, the actual owners are attuned to your every need. The prices are reasonable too!! Can't say enough good things!!

We stayed here for 4 nights visiting from the UK as part of a tour of the "South". Hanneke and George are tremendous hosts and made us feel so welcome right from the start. The room was lovely and clean and we had our own living room and outside area. Breakfasts had good choices with a lot of lovely home cooked food. George is extremely knowledgeable of all the area so was great in suggesting areas to visit depending on particular interests that day. We will treasure the maps and memories of this trip and would love to go back. George and Hanneke have just the right style for Innkeepers, we have stayed in quite a lot in the USA so speak from experience James and Lynette.
