We researched several options before booking our OBX vacation room for four days "out of season" or "not quite out of season" depending on who you ask. We decided that Sanderling Resort was the best value for our needs. (Look at their specials) Of course no one could have known that the federal govt. would have Wright Bros. memorial closed (a main reason for choosing OBX) or that the remnants of Karen would roost in Duck. One day the road to Kittyhawk was so flooded that we could not safely make it that far. We could have left, but because of the Sanderling's cancellation policy, we would have forfeited any remaining balance which was prepaid. The room and grounds were reasonably clean (the deck of the indoor pool, which is across the street, could use some attention). The s'more and screen doors are a nice touch. If you go, we stayed in a 2nd floor king room looking toward the Atlantic. This was a spacious room, the view was nice and you could easily hear the ocean. I would advise you to not waste money on "upgrading", unless you have a child or two and need a suite.

We are glad you stayed with us and hope despite the weather and federal closings you were able to relax and enjoy your vacation. We will be addressing the indoor pool area this winter. Hopefully your travels will bring you back soon.

We had our first stay at the Sanderling, and will return. The staff is exceptional...warm, friendly, and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Staff even told us no tipping, as it was included in resort fee (restaurants are an exception). Grounds are lovely and quiet. Beach area is exceptional....great sand, beach chairs and umbrellas (included), and private. Rooms are well furnished but on smaller side. Great areas to sit and watch surf or the sunrise, with sunset views over the sound from the front lanai. Restaurants are ok and you pay for convenience. But the resort is built for relaxation and totally hits the mark. Ocean view rooms are at a premium, but there are so many places to sit and enjoy the surf view, you might not miss it from the room.

Room Tip: Make sure you get ocean side...the sound of the surf at night makes sleeping so easy.

Just returned from our fifth trip to the Outer Banks and second stay at the Sanderling. Thanks to the Sanderling for a perfect time. I thought the Sanderling was great prior to the renovations, but WOW, it is awesome. The pools and firepits are such a wonderful transformation for the Inn. The room, the restaurants (all of them), the pools, and firepits were great. We were coming back in two years, but have decided to make it one! See you soon.

Room Tip: You need to book early to get an oceanfront room.

We were to have gone to Colorado for our vacation but due to the terrible conditions of the recent rains our hotel was unreachable due to all the roads being washed out. We were disappointed but took a chance on the Outer Banks. We had never been and we have certainly been missing something. The beaches are wonderful and unlike Ocean City or Rehobeth Beach there are no towering condominiums looming over the beach.

We chose the Sanderling based on the reviews and for the most part they are accurate. However, the reservation system needs improvement. We looked online and found the site somewhat confusing so we decided to call. The reservations office was not open and so we asked to speak with the front desk. That person said she couldn't help us because she didn't know the rates, packages, etc. We were working on 'last minute' plans due to aforementioned circumstances and we were told we had to call back at 9am. (What would have happened if we had just walked in looking for accomodations??)We did so, but still no answer and after several calls we were able to speak with someone. It was a frustrating experience and had I not seen a special advertised online, I would not have known about it. It was never offered. So...do your homework when booking. It was also very difficult to understand the room descriptions with regard to where they were located. We were told that all the rooms were new and when I asked about what types of renovations had been done, the agent said they "all have fresh paint and new trash cans". Really?!

Our room was in the new building on the ground floor. Room was very lovely and it was nice to be able to walk out the door and sit outside, but there is NO view. Only a grassy area and the fence to the pool. This wasn't described very well, so if you want a view of the ocean (which means you need to probably be on the third floor because of the height of the dunes) you need to make that known. We also found the bed to be very uncomfortable. It sagged in the middle and both my husband and I woke not feeling at all refreshed. For this price, a better mattress is expected.

The staff that we encountered on the property (bellmen, servers in restaurant, housekeepers) were very friendly and willing to help if needed. That was a real bonus. Ashley at the front desk area was a wealth of knowledge and we appreciated her guidance for restaurants & sights.

We enjoyed our stay, but I think it's a little pricey. For the activity fee of $25/day we didn't see the value. We had to set up our chairs on the beach ourselves because there wasn't anyone around and if we forgot our beach towels in the room, we had to return to the room to get them. They had bicycles, but they had to be rented. How about a courtesy 1 hour for guests? It was a little chilly on the days we were there (late Sept) and we would have enjoyed having some tea & cookies in the afternoon. The upstairs of the main lobby seems like a perfect place.

We enjoyed our breakfast in the Life Saving restaurant and Tara was very welcoming and remembered our likes & dislikes each day. We didn't eat in the other restaurant preferring to experience the Outer Banks dining scene.

I'm not sure I would call this a "resort" but it is a nice hotel. Needs a little tweaking - especially the reservations system.

So sorry your original plans were changed but glad you were able to still get away and discover a new destination. We apologize for any confusion with the reservation system. We will continue to work with our third party booking system to address these concerns as well as our after hour team. Our room types are by views and not building specifics. Sounds like you got to enjoy one of the six new rooms called Poolside Tranquility Kings which are all ground level. Oceanview Kings are above the dune line and give views of the Atlantic Ocean. Oceanside Kings are on the ocean side (opposed to sound) but do not have a view.

I have shared your comments with Tara. Thank you for recognizing her. We hope your travels will bring you back soon.

We used to visit the Sanderling regularly, but stopped a few years after having our daughter (and began visiting the family friendly Hampton Inn in Corolla). The Sanderling had seemed to cater to adults at that time, and it lacked a pool on the ocean side of the property (although a semi-indoor pool was available across the street). We decided to return with our now 12 yr old daughter, due to the added pools and beachside cafe. We stayed in the South Inn and were very pleased with our room and the renovations to the Inn overall. Our room was on the 2nd floor and had a view of the ocean over the dunes. I love the rope style chairs on the room porch. They are truly comfortable and clean (sometimes the typical plastic hotel porch furniture can get yucky with bugs but that is not the case at the Sanderling with these lovely rope/canvas type chairs) The room also looked over the adults only tranquility pool, which was truly tranquil and heated. Because our daughter is not 21, we tried the family pool, which did not seem to be heated, but had a lovely and large jacuzzi. Families should keep in mind that if you want to be near the family pool, it may be worth requesting a room in the main or north inn to be closer to the pool that would be most used. We didn't mind the walk over to the family pool. I really loved the chair and umbrella service for the beach. A simple call in the morning to the front desk to request chairs/umbrella, and it was all taken care of before we even walked onto the beach. We also appreciated the beachside cafe that served drinks and a limited menu. I have always been surprised that this service wasn't made available in the past (here and at other nearby hotels). Folks go to the OBX to enjoy the beach and when staying at a hotel, most folks don't pack lunch supplies. We loved to spend the entire day on the beach, but then struggled with what to do when needing a mid-day snack to hold us over until we felt like showering and going out for dinner. The cabana/cafe at Sanderling is a perfect option. We did not experience any issues with service; however, we walked to the cafe, placed our order and either ate it there, or carried back items to the beach. Loved the smores packages for a night-time snack. When we were there, they offered a fireside historical/ghost presentation from a local storyteller. He was very entertaining and it was a nice activity before turning in for the night. Sanderling staff were all very pleasant and helpful. While we did miss some of the prior offerings of the "old" Sanderling, ie, the afternoon tea and scones, we appreciate the new offerings and look forward to returning to the Sanderling.

Room Tip: If adults only, might want to request a room in South Inn. If family, might want to request Main or...

Hubby and I were very excited to come back to where we got married and spent our first anniversary, even more so since they renovated. From the minute we checked in to check out the Sanderling did not disappoint!

Our room was located at the South Inn (Rm 128) on the first floor so no view of the beach but we were able to walk right out to the Tranquility Pool, and beach access was practically right there so it was perfect! We loved the huge patio. The room itself was excellent, and the bathroom was HUGE!! The king bed was super comfortable also!

We did not eat lunch at the new Sandbar, so can't comment on the food but the pina coladas were good! Breakfast at the Lifesaving Station was on point! The pecan waffles were so tasty and hubby loved the omelets!

We didn't take advantage of the smores at the fire pit unfortunately, but we did rent bikes for a few hours and that was fun!

Staff was superb and friendly, especially our server at the Lifesaving station. Her name slips me but she was our server the two times we had breakfast (between 8-9am on Monday and Tuesday). We were happy to have run into Jessica, our wedding coordinator from 2011 and wish her all the best in her next endeavor!

Husband did comment that the TV's lacked HD channels, but really...that was a non-issue.The only thing that will keep us from visiting for our next anniversary is we're expecting our first child in February, but we love the Sanderling and the new look!

Just spent a week at Sanderling and wish I were still there! Everything was just lovely. Hubby and I have stayed a few times over the years and always loved it and now there is so much more to love. We loved it before and now we love it even more. From the time we arrived until we left the service was perfect. Garfield, Richard, Carol and Tara at the Beach Bar are now our best friends! Chris and the crew for setting up beach umbrellas are just tops! The housekeeping crew are top of the line. The spa is excellent. I am already planning a return trip but for a longer stay. The food at the beach bar is so above the norm. My only regret is that we didn't sample Kimball's Kitchen but our only excuse is that we were so full of good food from breakfast at the superb Lifesaving Station Restaurant and excellent food for lunch at the Beach Bar we were just too full but that is my only disappointment which I will rectify on my next visit. I'm already planning my visit for next year and bringing friends.

Room Tip: On all our visits we have only ever stayed in the South Wing 3rd. Floor since we like an Ocean View...
