We were thrilled to go back to the "new" Sanderling in early October...after the best time ever in July 2013.
Mother Nature cooperated, with temperatures in the high 70s...and not a lick of rain. Just oceanfront relaxation and action: boogie-boarding, beach-trekking, tennis-playing and dining in style...all while staying in a beautiful room...and catered to by a world-class staff.
The "vibe" here is unlike any we've experienced on many trips. Pure joy: s'mores at the fire pit and an a cappella choir serenade dozens of contented guests. More joy: swim "your age" in the number of laps at the new tranquility pool, while the ocean sings its special song to you. Or just watch the amazing sundown on surf or sound side. Or both sides.
Thank you, one and all. We would be delighted to return.

Keep this secret. Beach resort in the fall are excellent chance for luxury R&R on a budget.
I was delighted by my first time stay at Sanderling Resort in Duck in October. The room and lounges were well appointed and spacious during the fall. The spa across the 2 lane road was an easy walk. I enjoyed several treatments. The outdoor pool was warm enough to swim during the brisk outdoor temp's. With the choice of two outdoor hot spa; if the temperature at one was too hot, just go to the other one. And of course, there is alway the beach. The best quality about Sanderling was the staff. Friendly, helpful but not in your way. Only suggestions for Sanderling is the pricing for the spa treatment were a bit high considering it was the off season, a 4 treatments for the price of 3, would have been a sweet deal. And the $25 resort fee seemed high for a solo traveler when some amenities like the activities center were closed.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for the beach side. The road noise can be disrupt if you are a light sleep...

Thank you for your review. We have shared your comments with the staff. We are glad you enjoyed the spa and left relaxed and pampered. We look forward to your return. Note to Travelers: Our Resort Fee is $25 from May - October. $15 from November - April. The activity center is priced a la carte and open in season. It is not related to the resort fee. Spa offerings are adjusted seasonally.

Just north of Duck spent our first visit to the OBX at the Sanderling. We were not disappointed. The setting is perfect in a peaceful and quaint stretch of the OBX which is very well located for sightseeing and restaurants. Beach is beautiful and very private. Resort is spotlessly clean and very elegant. Common spaces are stunning and lots of decks and balconies to relax. Small decks overlooking the beach with great beach chairs were a great way to enjoy a drink or sit under the stars at night. Our room was a bit small but bathroom was very large. Well appointed. Great towels in abundance. Small quiet deck overlooking a garden was a peaceful place to enjoy coffee in the morning. Beds were very comfortable. Pools were nice, very clean as well. Overall an excellent experience. Dined at the Lfesaving Station twice for breakfast and twice for dinner. Food was exceptional and will write separate review. Service at the resort was good but very poor in the restaurant. Would not hesitate to return to the resort.

The Sanderling Inn has always been a favorite place for us to stay on the Outer Banks, but with the new renovations it is even better! The main building is more open and brighter with the views of both sound side and Oceanside, the inside bar, the new pools, and fire pits. The restaurants are more open and the change to white and navy paint colors make it even more nautical feeling.
Large rooms, luxurious bedding, view of the ocean, and great friendly service makes for a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: Definitely stay in the south side, second or third floor for the pool, great ocean view, and more qu...

This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and Duck. We stayed in Buxton on the southern outer banks 3 days and then came to the Sanderling Resort. There is a big difference between both ends of the OB. The south is more remote and the accomodations are more basic. Duck is much more upscale, developed and populated. The Sanderling Resort is a beautiful property. Located right on the beach with beautiful ocean vistas. The resort is immaculately maintained. The lobby is an attractive, relaxed and inviting area. Our ocean front room was spacious and luxurious. The bed was great. The staff was consistently welcoming and helpful. Our room service breakfasts were about as good as room service gets. We had special laundering requests after being on the road for 2 weeks and they responded. The resort's best restaurant was unfortunately closed the days we hadn't made plans with friends at other restaurants in Duck, but the more casual Lifesaving Station was excellent with a varied menu. If we return to Duck in the future, we wouldn't consider another hotel.

My only complaint about my long weekend at the Sanderling is that I couldn't stay longer. The resort is set on a pristine, quiet stretch of beach, just steps away from our gorgeous rental house. We could choose to lounge on our deck and watch the dolphins, stroll the beach to collect armfuls of perfect black scallop shells, or enjoy the tranquil adults-only pool and hottub. It is every bit as beautiful as it looks on the website.

The staff bent over backwards to ensure we had anything we wanted to relax and enjoy the property and beach, everyone was just incredibly nice. the house itself was spacious and comfy, but with minimal basic kitchen supplies (i guess most people don't cook), but we only had to make a phone call and they brought us anything we needed. We also ate twice at the lifesaving station ( thats the odd name of a restaurant); huge portions and really tasty local fare. we only had cocktails and appetizers at Kimballs, but everything was top notch. Some of our group used the spa and had great experiences as well.

All in all it was a spectacular place to relax and unwind, very natural and luxurious without being overly fancy. Can't wait to go back for a longer stay.

Room Tip: Not sure how busy it gets during high season, but a visit late summer/early fall is the time to go!

I recently visited the Sanderling (in one of its beautiful guest houses) with a group of college friends. It was heaven. State of the art kitchen, room upon room of cozy, inviting settings, breathtaking views, a still private feeling beach, and access to the luxuries of a spa resort literally steps away. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed or wanted (and more). The food, from tasty sandwiches at poolside to oysters watching a stunning sunset at chic Kimball's, was first rate. I couldn't recommend the Sanderling more highly.
