“Enjoyed our Stay- Accomodated our Children Well.”
Reviewed 3 February 2011

We have stayed at the Brookwood Inn twice since our daughter's first eye surgery in 2009. The first time they provided somewhere for our then 1 year old daughter to sleep and were very friendly. The staff in the grill downstairs were great as well and my daughter fell in love with one of the waitresses. The second go around, a year later in March of 2010, we chose to stay at the Brookwood Inn because of their accomodations and atmosphere when our daughter had eye surgery for a second time, she weas 2. We brought our then 8 year old daughter along with us because we didn't have anyone to care for her or take her to school during our stay. Yet again the hotel staff was very friendly and provided accomodations for our youngest daughter. Our oldest daughter fell in love with the chicken strips and steak from the grill.
All in all both stays were very satisfying and I would recommend this hotel to anyone needing to stay near the Duke Eye Center or Duke Hospital.

I had an interview at the Duke Medical Center and picked Brookwood because of its closeness. I wasn't disappointed. This hotel is all business and seems to have most of its visitors there because of the medical center. It is across the street from the VA hospital and 1 hospital over is the Duke Hospital. Its not fancy, the drawers in my dresser were broken but honestly, I wasn't planning on using those anyway, but besides that it was a pretty standard 2.5star hotel I would think. I was very pleasantly surprised that there was free and easy to access wifi, as well as a minifridge and microwave in my room.

Although the Brookwood Inn advertises its alleged renovation, they stuck me in an unrenovated section in the "back" according to the clerk, who, when I complained about the loud heater and foul smell, told me, "Too bad." If I hadn't checked in so late, I would've happily left the hotel and disputed the charge on my credit card.

Did I mention the odor? Let me emphasize that they use some kind of foul cleaning or perfume agent, which adds to the ambiance created by pillows and beds that were probably quarried and hauled by slave labor into the quarters.

One might legitimately wonder how this establishment stays in business. The answer: proximity to the hospital, where I, like so many of the current occupants, are going to residency interviews. I gave them a five for location and a one for all other attributes quite deservedly. Other med students, or other people in general: don't be seduced by low prices and proximity. Stay somewhere without nasty clerks and lousy facilities.

BrookwoodInn, Manager at CAMBRiA hotel & suites Durham - Duke University Medical Center Area, responded to this review, 23 August 2012
Thanks for your input. We appreciate hearing about your experiences - even the unfortunate ones!

Our South Tower building has not been renovated to look like the main building. If you book your reservation directly with the hotel you can tell us which building you prefer - the South Tower is less expensive as we have not renovated and replaced the bathrooms yet. This is very clearly indicated on the reservation engine attached to our website. Unfortunately I do not know which reservation this review is discussing so I do not know what type of room they tried to book. When guest book through a prepaid model with an online travel agent we do not know what type of room you prefer so please give us a call and let us know as changes are they booked the least expensive room available!

If you have a family member at Duke hospital this hotel is a good bet. The main building is recenlty renovated and has microwave and fridge. Rooms are quiet and comfortable. Best of all parking is free for one car.

Hotel had NO RUNNING WATER for 5 hours & the manager would not give a discount. The elevators were disgusting to say the least. Filthy & stunk. Advised the staff many times...they did NOT CARE. Breakfast was not offered. Across the street from Duke Hospital & the Durham VA hospital. They gave a hospital rate of $79 & snuck in a $4 per day fee for "availability to use the safe in the room" ... I was sure to get that refunded. Stay there only for mere convenience of the hospitals.

Had surgery at Duke Eye with post-op the following day. Medical rate ($79) was reasonable - not cheap, not pricey. Staff was courteous. Room clean and quiet. Enzo's pizza was recommended and was ordered delivered ($2.50 delivery charge - reasonable). Exceptionally good! Be sure to order one; they take CC over phone and you can add in tip. Delivery boy not allowed above lobby so be prepared to go there when he arrives (he'll call you from lobby phone). On site "restaurant" is for basics only - not gourmet but satisfying if you are hungry. We thought breakfast was very good. Wait staff very courteous and prompt, Driver of courtesy van (takes you to hospitals, clinics, etc and return at your call) was also very accomodating and polite; don't forget to give him a small tip - we saw several guests who didn't and thought that they were just ignorant of protocol. We are repeating the entire scenario in a few days (the other eye gets done).

Hope this is of some help.
