9th Street has long been a funky street in Durham. It featured independent eateries and bars and a real, old-time, independent bookstore.
The eastern side of the street features the older, independent businesses. Some of the buildings seem a bit rickety, but they have their own unique charm that is somehow lost in the newer buildings on the western side of the street.
Places you'll want to hit: Chubby's Tacos for a taqueria-style hole in the wall; don't miss the guacatillo salsa. Charlie's bar; surprisingly good spinach salad with hot seafood. Francesca's; Durham's original dessert cafe. Blue Corn Cafe; yummy guacamole. The Regulator Bookshop; haven for book and magazine lovers. And there are lots more great places to discover... As you can tell, I'm partial to the eastern side of the street.
