“Thanksgiving in Durham NC”
Reviewed 30 November 2013

We had our thanksgiving dinner at Four Square picked from the reviews at Open Table. There were plenty of options for their seating at 7:30 which we chose (was apparently the last one.) We were not disappointed although my husband felt the traditional turkey dinner he chose was not done quite enough. I had the beef wellington which was excellent. We had the oysters and the duck terrine as starters which were both excellent. The desserts we chose were chocolate cheesecake and pumpkin panna cotta also delicious. They had a good wine selection, by the glass for us because my husband doesn't drink. The restaurant was elegant yet comfortable in a historic home, with a decent size bar for waiting on your table. The staff was friendly and informative.

“Superb restaurant, wonderful staff”
Reviewed 10 November 2013

A group of 8 of us went to Four Square recently, trying to impress a visiting faculty person. The food was uniformly superb. The chef blends ingredients that don't normally go together in interesting ways. I began with a fried snail panini, which was lighter and more interesting than it may sound. My main was seared scallops with coriander, lemon zest, and polenta. Simple, and perfectly prepared. The wine list is excellent, and the staff is great. We've been many times, and we'll keep going - it's a great restaurant, and varied enough that it's easy to go back often. And the visitor was impressed...

“Not so Much”
Reviewed 5 October 2013

Having seen various rave reviews of Four Square, we anticipated a pleasant experience - wrong. The entire experience was average at best - limited menu, uninspired service, unrecognizable buffalo carpaccio, and duck that was fatty and over-cooked. There must be options in Durham.

“"Average at Best"”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

Environment is great. The restaurant is located in an old plantation home, with four eating rooms. The service was very good, but the food selection is limited to "unusual" fare with no fall-back plan for common palates. The appetizers were better than the entree. We both ordered the pork chop, and either we had tough pork chops or bad knives.

PS. A table next to us raved about their food, but for us.... we won't be back.

We were visiting from Ct and found this winderful place on tripadvisor. Creative dishes perfect sized portions and absolutely delishous . Met the chef as we were sitting at his favorite table on the beautiful screen porch. Staff was friendly and knowledgable about all of the dishes.

We're so glad that you discovered us while you were in town and enjoyed your dinner! Chef Shane loves to take the opportunity to say hi to guests and make sure they are having a good time. That's great that you got to meet him! We hope you see us again when you come through Durham next time!
