We lucked into Tonali this past weekend, after an online search for a highly rated reasonably priced restaurant in the area around 15-501/University Drive. Four 20-somethings and two 50+ foodies agreed on Tonali, and we couldn’t have been more pleased. Pork ribs over potato/plantain mash, grouper tacos, yellowfin tuna empanadas, pork carnitas--even the house salad with hibiscus dressing was memorable. Homemade chips and tortillas. And did I mention the margaritas? Watermelon, mango, guanabana, and more. Thank goodness no one had a cold, because we were all sampling each other’s food and drinks (NOT a common occurrence in this bunch). I don’t at all consider their menu “limited.” Everyone had a hard time deciding and can’t wait to go back to try something else. No, it’s not pages and pages of beef/chicken/bean quesadillas/enchiladas/chimichangas; instead there are plenty of creative, diverse options. Entrees are $17-$23, apps and salads around $8-$12. Portions aren’t huge, but are superior to many other places with such gourmet offerings. Several apps could be “small plate” meals, especially if you added a salad. A little difficult to ask questions about the menu due to some language challenges, and one of our party got the wrong dish but ate it anyway because it was so good. Service speed was reasonable, and everyone was extremely nice. Great evening all around!
