“Just What the Doctor Ordered”

This was one of the most pleasurable and memorable experiences I've had in a long time. The town itself is clean, classy, beautifully restored throughout, and absolutely tranquil at night. The B&B is within walking distance (5 min) to both downtown and all the historical attractions, as well as the waterfront. And then there's the food! Don is truly a BBQ pit master, having won his share of awards. The ribs were without a doubt some of the best I've ever had, and his techniques are simple and easy to learn. He's a friendly and patient teacher, too. The breakfasts were beyond exquisite. Diane's experience as a chef really shined through here. Omelets and pancakes and fresh blueberry compote, even fresh sausage, they really took care of us and we never left the table hungry. These are very real and personable people who are a pleasure to get to know. On top of everything else, the B&B has a charming atmosphere with bedrooms to match. Our room was quaint, the bed comfy, the bathroom perfect. We were never too hot or too cold. The porch outside is inviting for reading or casual conversation without other guests. This place is exactly what one needs to distress from the busy city-life. Thanks, Don and Diane!

Room Tip: Upstairs on an outside wall is peaceful.

This B&B was nice but was lacking in some of the finer touches to elevate it to upscale. Although our room & bath were spacious, the furniture was not appropriate to the era of the house 1908. Dining room was crowded trying to accommodate everyone. Plastic tablecloths & packages of jelly were in keeping with IHOP. Breakfast was good but very limited and simple. Instead of a complimentary wine in the afternoon, it was for sale.
The hosts were very nice & helpful with local information & recommendations. We could recommend staying here just don't expect elegance.

Room Tip: Don't pick a room downstairs. Both are right beside the dining room. We were upstairs. It was n...

Don P, Owner at Captain's Quarters Inn, responded to this review, 15 August 2014
Thanks for your review we do appreciate you taking your time to write. You are right, our Inn is not upscale, we don’t advertise as so, nor do our prices reflect that. What we do have is a nice clean and comfortable inn with great food in a very special town. We are also working on replacing some furniture to the 1907 era of the house; however your room does have a nautical theme, with a newly renovated bath with hard wood floors, a Subway tile rain shower and soaking tub. I’m also trying to not make the Dining room feel so full; when we have all of our rooms rented we try to have guest enjoy breakfast at different times, however sometimes it does not work out that way, our apologies for that. I have never eaten at an IHOP but I’m sure that there are not fresh flowers and linen napkins on the tables. We do try to keep breakfast simple with a menu that changes daily with hand picked Blueberries, local Melons and Tomatoes, Basil and fresh herbs from our garden, Inn Smoked Bacon, Inn made Sausage, Breads, Cakes and Cookies. Rather than using breakfast meats with who knows what is in them and pre packaged baked goods. Being a winemaker I prefer to have a nice list of wines for sale rather that give away something inexpensive that I would not enjoy myself. Elegance is in the eyes of the beholder.

First experience with bed and breakfast accommodations but hope not our last. Don and wife were not overly welcoming and this opinion was the consensus of the 4 couples who came for Rib U. The accommodations were nice but the little extras were not there. Nothing special about his rib u class not even a special rub or sauce all store bought and proudly presented that way. Dinner prepared from our ribs and shared was nothing spectacular was accompanied with store bought beans (Bushes) and Cole-slaw. No dessert or even an after meal coffee was offered. Host and hostess to me was very curt and not very friendly, both would never get the" good humor award". Maybe I expected too much from the experience but even a smile would have gone a long way.

We were here for the "Rib U" experience. It was well worth it. Don is a great host and an excellent instructor. I learned a lot about the basics of smoking ribs, doing the preparation and most importantly, eating a rib dinner with wine and all the trimmings. I learned a lot, all the ribs prepared by the 3 couples in attendance were tasty and fall off the bone good. Interestingly, the wood for smoking is obtained from a crab apple tree in the front yard. This is local sourcing! The accommodations are spacious and clean. Breakfast each day was incredibly good. A byproduct of making the ribs the night before was Don made fresh smoked sausage from the rib trimmings which was delicious. This was served with breakfast as well as roasted fresh tomatoes from the front yard garden. We need a sausage making school now :) We will return

Room Tip: We chose the corner quilt room which has windows on 2 walls since it's a corner. It's very...

If you are looking at getting away to a nice quiet place that just oozes history, then Edenton NC is it. And the best place to stay is the Captain's Quarters Inn. Each of the rooms in this nautical themed B&B are both comfortable and cozy. and just about everything you may want to do is within easy walking distance in town or a short drive away. Or you can just enjoy a quiet evening on the large porch. Don't miss out on owner Bob's "Rib University" where he'll pass on some of his award winning rib secrets for you to use and then enjoy for dinner. Each of the rooms in this nautical themed B&B are both comfortable and cozy.

Room Tip: Any one of the rooms is great, but I enjoy the second floor.

We were a group of four couples from SC and VA playing golf and drinking wine. And we could not have found a better place to stay. Each room was different and well appointed. We spent the better part of our waking hours on the very comfortable front porch and Don and Diana were also kind enough to let us bring munchies and wine into the parlor which was very comfortable and elegant at the same time. We were lucky to have 3 breakfasts there and each day couldn't believe how the breakfast was better than the day before. The smoked bacon was extraordinary. One nite they prepared a 3 course dinner for us with wine and every course was unique and delicious. It is definitely a place to which we will return - hopefully soon.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are best.

We stayed at the Captain's Quarters in late June. 2014 and graduated from "Rib U". Don is a great instructor who was eager to share his knowledge. The ribs we and two other couples prepared under Don's guidance were excellent. Changed my whole approach to making ribs!
Accommodations were clean and comfortable and included all necessary amenities.
The breakfasts were delicious and imaginative. All loved Diane's oatmeal pancakes.
Gracious hosts who make you feel at home. Enjoyed Don's sense of humor.
