We stayed at a cabin which was out dated but clean and cozy. There were lots of things to do in the resort swimming, horseback riding, hiking, boating and fishing. Just a short drive for sightseeing to the Fontana Lake and dam was great, which seem to be a part of the resort. There is no cell service but access to wireless internet service is available. If you love the outdoors then this is a great place to spend some time. It is also pet friendly which was great since we have a cat who loved it here. We are most likely coming back soon.

Thank you so much for such a nice review! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed all the amenities that the resort has to offer its guests. There are also a lot of activities to do that are very nearby, so we hope you were able to enjoy those as well! Cell service is very limited here, but we think it can be a blessing in disguise! It gives families that quality time to “unplug” and get away from everyday life. The Wi-Fi is great for checking in as needed though! We have a lot of pet guests that visit us, so we are happy to hear that your cat found us pleasing as well!

We hope to see you back soon!

Our first visit to FV was for a seven-night stay. Here's the good and not so good:

Good --

Views were spectacular.

Lazy river/pool was nice for our 12 year old and 7 year old.

Wildwood Grill food and service.

Seeing 'no service' on my cellphone was fantastic.

Room was sufficient. Hopefully you're not coming here to spend days in a hotel room anyway.

Fontana Lake cruise with Captain Carl was a highlight. He was very knowledgable and patiently guided us around the lake for nearly 2 hours.

Not So Good --

Room pricing structure: We opted for a hotel room instead of the cabin and were assigned a 2 queen bed room behind the main lodge. For $50 a night additional we could have been on the second floor in a "Poolside Cabana." The only real benefit I now see to this is not having to listen every time our upstairs neighbor walks across the floor, drops something on the floor or uses the bathroom.

Water quality: The first couple of days there we ran tubs of water that had a tannish tint. By our fourth day it was brown. When I asked about it at the front desk I was told a water main had broken and we should just let the water run to clear the pipes...ummm don't you think something like that should have been shared without having to ask? Needless to say we started using bottled water for brushing our teeth.

Housekeeping: This service was inconsistent at best. The first couple days it was fine. Then we returned one day and found one bed had been made, but not the other and this went on for three days. By the end of our stay we had run out of toilet paper and tissues and neither was replenished.

Internet access: No cell service is one thing, but having to walk to the lodge to get a consistent wi-fi signal is not acceptable. We typically don't preplan our vacation itenararies and rely on the internet to map out our day-to-day journeys. Wi-fi worked in the room, but not like it should (especially when every mom and pop motel from Fontana to Maggie Valley seemed to offer it).

Good and Bad --

Location: We like to day trip and if you can overcome the fact that the first 45 minutes of any day trip is going to take you over the same stretch of highway then the location of FV is great. We took trips to Cherokee, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg and Murphy. It would have been nice to paddle Fontana Lake, but rental prices were steep ($40/hour or $60/4 hours).

Summary: For us FV rates a solid "C." We love the history surrounding the place, but it's showing its age.

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback with us regarding your recent vacation. We appreciate you taking the time to list out what you felt was good and what you felt needed to be looked at. The area is definitely one of a kind so we are happy that you enjoyed your experience with the scenery, history, etc. We apologize if your accommodations were not what you had hoped for. There isn’t typically such an inconsistency with housekeeping, I hope you were able to let the front desk know of the items you needed though. Our apologies. Wi-Fi is being expanded as of now to reach the entire resort property, so that is an issue we are in the process of remedying. We are definitely a drive from most places, but most folks are happy to know that they can come back to the peace and quiet that we have here in these mountains! We hope your family was able to enjoy that as well!

Thank you again for your constructive feedback, we will be sure to address each concern. We hope to have you back again in the near future!

We too read the reviews from years past. After talking with the staff and the efforts put forth to rejuvenate FV, I appreciated this place even more. Yes I agree there is room for improvement yet the few bumps that we hit I felt as if the staff was more than accommodating. This place has something for everyone and we are planning a family get together for summer 2015 with families traveling from 3 states.
1) HOTEL ROOM VS CABIN. Depending if you are staying for a weekend or a week, decide before arrive if you want to sleep in the lodge/cabanas or cozy up in a cabin and make your own meals and or eat meals in their yummy onsite eateries. We recommend cabins 1714-20. We were extremely happy. A bear and ground hog sighting on our property made the moment.
2) DAY EXCURSIONS. Endless possibilities depending on your physicality. a) MORNING DRIVES -My family sleeps in later than I. I took morning drives to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains including taking in the views from the Fontana Dam b) MARINA - The group that runs the Marina is fantastic. We set sail on The Hazel for a sunset cruise. Ken our tour guide is retired from Asheville, NC Parks and Recreation and did a fantastic job with sharing the local history (him and his wife actually live on a house boat during the summer. Imagine having your grandkids fall asleep star gazing). We loved the sunset cruise so much that the next day we rented a pontoon boat for 4 hours to sight see and for our teenage kids to tube. It is so quiet that you may or may not see other boaters. We came back for more ending the week with a pontoon boat ride & hike to Proctor. J.P. our guide for the Proctor trip has a degree in Parks and Recreation from ECU and enriched the day outing with facts & history of the area. If you into treasure hunting you will definite sight some artifacts. c) WHITE WATER RAFTING - We visited Bryson City and white water rafted on the Nantahala. If you are choosing a "guided" raft tour the Nantahala is good for kids and the Ocoee for the more adventurous. d) CHEROKEE INDIAN RESERVATION e) HIKING - options are endless. You are in AT terrotory. The trail crosses over the Fontana Dam. Onsite are some good hikes (bring a map) or ask J.P. which trails to try. We hiked the Twenty Mile trail in the the GSM National park and got to eat some blackberries along the way. If you visit the FV website you can link to all of the activities that this beautiful region has to offer
3) ONSITE ACTIVITIES. Recommend the pools and putt putt golf. Next time we will try the disc golf, horse back riding and clogging lessons. Depending on the day of week that your are visiting there are daily scheduled activities. Again, something for everyone. Loved going down to the General Store for ice cream and picking up a few things that we may or may not needed. At check in the staff gives you a pamphlet of the overview of all activities for the week.
:):):)
thank you to the Fontana Village staff & Marinina for making our week both relaxing and adventurous

Room Tip: cabins 1714-1720, the red roof tops have a creek behind the cabin, the cabanas seem fun i

My husband and 2 girls spent the weekend here. Beautiful views, lots to do and see! We took a pontoon cruise on Fontana Lake, which we all loved. We ate dinner at the lodge restaurant. My husband and I had the local trout, which was very good. My daughter got pork barbeque, which we didn't care for, and my other daughter had chicken alfredo, which she didn't care for either. We ate breakfast there the next morning (as there was no other option) and all had the buffet. It was good, but pricey. I would have appreciated a coffee shop in the lobby, as I hate those in room, one cup at a time coffee bags. The lodge room we stayed in was very basic. Bedding was scratchy and needed updating. However towels were very nice, seemed new. The lighting in the hallway leading to our room (downstairs) was out, and it was very dark. I wondered why they didn't replace the bulbs all weekend? Also saw a few centipedes in the hallway, kinda gross. We also ate dinner at the Grill. Cheaper option, but just sandwiches and pizza. The pizza seemed to have been brought in as frozen dough and baked there. We did enjoy the band that played on the porch. We played mini golf, and swam in the pool with the lazy river. Both of those were nice. We also did the campfire / marshamallow roast. Fun, but I was worried about all of the small children running around with sharp sticks and marshmallows that they had set on fire. No one seemed to be running this. Just a bag of marshmallows and some sticks.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the first floor, try to get the 2nd floor.

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback from your recent stay with us. We appreciate hearing from our guests regarding their visit. We are happy that you were able to enjoy the onsite amenities as well as the Fontana Lake. The lake is such a nice treat this time of year! The water temperatures are perfect for swimming and boating. We appreciate your visit to both onsite restaurants. The Grill is a great spot to have dinner and enjoy live music in the summer. We are happy that you were able to participate in that. We appreciate your feedback both positive and negative. We will be sure to discuss the issues you have brought to our attention.

Thanks again and we hope to see you in the future!

Left me first start with the fact that I have been in the hotel business for over 20 years so I really understand hotels. This hotel did a very good job for what it is. My partner and I were there for the Miata's at the Gap event and truly enjoyed our stay. If you are looking for a Ritz Carlton then go there, that's not was this resort is all about. It's a remote mountain resort that is reasonably priced and relaxing to be at. Our room was in the main lodge and although not the newest it was clean and we found the bed to be very comfortable. The balcony was nice to sit on overlooking the pool area. We used all of the facilities over the 4 days we were there. The Lodge Pool is definitely the spot…no kids, quiet and relaxing. We spent several days at this pool. The general store is well stocked and provided anything we really needed in a pinch. Had ice cream several times and it was nice to wind down the day sitting on the large front porch. The Wildwood Grille has a huge outdoor covered seating area and we eat there several times. The food is basic but still well prepared. The staff was friendly and took good care of us every time. What was really a nice treat was the Bistro up in the main lodge. It's a little expensive for western North Carolina but being from NY/NJ area it was fairly priced. The food was absolutely excellent. As good as we have had anywhere. We were comparing it to some of our favorite places in the NYC! The service was excellent. I wish we would have had another meal there as it was a highlight of our stay. The fresh baked bread and butter were a nice addition. The pork loin was superb! We couldn’t have asked for more. The resort even had hoses, buckets and sponges available to wash our cars as we Miata people are a little picky about keeping our cars clean. We will definitely be back again next year for the Miata event. Thanks for taking care of us car people…we loved it!

Thank you so much for such a wonderful review! It is so nice to hear that you had such an amazing trip! We really look forward to our Miata event each year and always love hearing about the trips. It sounds like you were able to really enjoy the onsite amenities and get some rest and relaxation in. There is a variety of things to do here to please everyone! The Grill porch is definitely the place to be this time of year, especially if you enjoy outdoor dining. As for the Mountview, it sounds like we really exceeded your expectations – and for that we are thrilled! The Chef has worked hard on the menu and loves to read comments such as this one.

We can’t wait to have you guys all back again next year!

My husband and I stayed here for a corporate event in June. The area is absolutely breathtaking and very secluded which made it nice for a weekend getaway. The hotel staff was very nice and accommodating, the pool was nice, but the rooms were awful. Our room had a plastic cup with cigarette ashes/butts in it out on the balcony which leads me to believe the housekeeping did a subpar job of cleaning. The rooms are very outdated, the bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable and the bedding was scratchy. Luckily I had read online about the rooms so I had brought my own pillows and comforter and I recommend everyone do the same. The internet only works in the main lobby area so be prepared to not have service most of the time, which was actually quite nice to unplug and get away. The location and the main area of the lodge are very nice, but this hotel definitely needs a renovations on the rooms.

Arrived on our Harleys, after touring Gettysburg and riding the Blue Ridge Parkway, ready to relax, before conquering the Dragon. FV was the perfect place. Had a 2-bedroom cabin, with full kitchen and living room. Large deck to enjoy the outdoors. The complex has it all, a lodge, cabana rooms, variety of cabins, dining room, grill, general store, ice cream parlor, laundromat, 2 pools (1 with a lazy river), entertainment and more.
