“Beautiful part of the country, great resort - nicest people”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2009

Just got back from a group trip to Fontana Village Resort and could not have had a nicer time. We stayed in Lodge rooms in the Garden section. Roomy, comfortable with a small balcony , cable TV, telephone, wifi and a hot, shower with good water pressure. The rooms were about on par with your basic holiday inn - but it's the rest of the resort that makes the visit special! The location is just stunning - everywhere you look is an amazing view of mountains and lakes. From the resort marina we took a boat ride across Fontana lake to a wonderful hiking spot. The hike leader was very well versed in the local history, making the day trip that much better. Back at the resort there are all kinds of activities - putt putt golf, 3 pools, frisbee golf, tennis, basketball, softball, arts and crafts - the list just goes on. The food was very good with lots of choices and a very friendly wait staff. Our group was all adults but we will be back there with the kids as this is a perfect family spot.

Great place to visit but will not go back. My family , my wife, 13 year old daughter and I, checked in Sunday Aug 3, 2008 and checked out Sunday, Aug 10, 2008. We were part of a group of 7 other family member that rented a total of 4 cabins - Laurels, Willows, Hemlock, and Azalea .

This was our second vacation at this is a very beautiful location. The addition of the new swimming pool area was a pleasant surprise from our first visit a couple of years ago.

This vacation spot gives the appearance of being family orientated but that is sadly not what we experienced. During the week it was very peaceful and serene but that was not the case on the week end.

Our first night, Sunday, was not very pleasant. There was a group of folks, at least 20 people, that had assembled and had a outside keg and bonfire party within 25 feet from our bedroom outside. This party lasted until 1:30 the next morning. My problem was not with the folks who were partying, but with the management of Fontana Village who allowed this to take place. I was told that Fontana Village has security that monitors the Village at night. If that is the case, how could they not have seen this keg party. It would have been impossible for them not to see it.

Our last night was also not very pleasant. The facility hosted a mountain bike race which was well attended. The bike race itself was very interesting but the problem our party had was that a band had setup in the ball field area and played so loud that most areas in the Village were exposed to the music if they wanted to listen or not. Our cabin was located about 400 yards from the ball field and I could truly say it was impossible to sleep because of the loud hard rock music. I called the registration desk at about 10:00pm and asked how long the band was going to play as it was very disturbing to us. She indicated it would probably end at 11:00pm. I called the desk again about 11:15 and asked to speak to a manager. The lady I talked to was very polite and compassionate to our problem but stated she was there by herself and no manager was available. The band finally finished playing 12:30. That is a long time to be subject to loud music that you do not wish to listen to.

I do hope the owners of this resort reads these comments because when I checked out there was not much interest as to what I had to say. Adding up the amount of money our group spent - 4 cabins, daily golf cart, jet ski rentals, one day pontoon boat rental, dinning at the Wildwood Grill and Mountview Bistro, craft activity, and other miscellaneous items, I would estimate to be $6000.00 for our week stay.

If you are looking for a nice family place for your vacation, this is not the place.

As a timeshare owner, I may be a bit biased about Fontana. We've stayed at the lodge once and in a cabin this past time. Our cabin was a 3 bed, 2 bath Magnolia which was a bit large for just the 2 of us, but it was all that was left when we made reservations. The AC worked well, the kitchen had your basics except for papertowels which I wouldn't expect them to provide anyway. No one goes to the beach and gets a house expecting to have it stocked with cleaners, papertowels and laundry detergent..so why would you expect it here??

Cabin PROS: Cold AC, comfy beds, clean, hot water, good water pressure, dishwasher, phones, cable TV, whirlpool tub, comfy couches, fireplace, outdoor fire pit, rocking chairs, picnic table.

Cabin CONS: tiny dining area.

The pools are fabulous and the Ghost Tour was a lot of fun. They also offer hiking, horseback riding, frisbee golf, bocce ball, ladderball, tennis, volleyball bike rides, golf cart rentals, ATV rentals, bike rentals, basketball courts, 2 outdoor pools and lazy river, 1 indoor pool, weight room, game room, bingo, craft classes, softball, the lake, house boat rentals, paddle boats, lake ferry tours, an ice cream shop and beautiful scenery!

In reference to the cabins and what other people have written..it states in the cabin directory on the table as you enter that if you would like your linens changed at any point of your stay or a house cleaning, you have to call the front desk and request it...no extra charge. Towels you leave on the balcony and they'll bring you fresh ones. They don't want to disturb you or interrupt your day by cleaning cabins at 8am. I believe the Lodge works just like a regular hotel.

You have to remember that this village was built in the 1940's during the war for the families of the men who were building the dam. Renovations have been done, but they're still working on them. Our cabin had new floors and fresh paint and I heard one of the employees mention that they're also working to replace all the dishes and cutlery so that they match in every cabin.

The food is a little expensive, but very good. I also read someone's complaint about the golf carts at night and blamed it on the workers. The golf carts are rented out for $55 for 24 hrs. We had a problem with a couple of young teenagers trying to jump ramps in them and squealing around turns. We reported them and security took care of it in under 15 minutes.

We were in Fontana for the Miatas at the Gap event, so there were approx. 300 Miatas cruising around and the Biker Resort was full, but even sitting on our porch at dinner time and even late at night, we never heard loud engines or yelling. Just peace and quiet. It's just a very family oriented place with a very safe feel and has the sense of a community. You get to know people just walking around and everyone's always so friendly. This village has everything you NEED for a week to get by, but if you want shopping, you will have to go to the city. This village is meant to be a getaway from everyday life and remind us of the simple pleasures to be found in nature. As soon as I get home, I already miss the place and I can't wait for our next trip in a few months!

This is our third trip to Fontana. It is true that you get what you pay for. The first time we stayed in a one bedroom log trailer (willow). It was pretty new and pretty nice. The second time, we stayed in a two bedroom Laurel cabin. It was ok, but kinda old. The cable didn't work and there were exposed wires in the ceiling. It was clean enough. It was up on hill with no parking. Since we had an SUV, we could make our own.
This year there were no Laurels available, we stayed in the Dogwoods. It was aptly named. It was barely acceptable. It had a noticeable tilt to the house which seemed to get worse while we were there. I do believe I discovered a new species of arachnid while we were there. It was infested with 8 legged animals. The fridge was a tiny hotel room one. The bathroom reminded me of some 15$ an hour motels. It is also BYOAC. Bring your own airconditioner, which we did. The mattresses are shot.
The restaurants are overpriced by about 25 percent compared to the surrounding tourist cities. The store is unbelievably overpriced. They have a list of activities that is more like a guideline for when an employee feels like it. Things like bubbles for the kids and softball for the kids only happened if you made it.

On the pluses:
It is a great location. The temperature is consistently 10+ degrees cooler than South Carolina. The three pools are nice. The new pool and lazy river is a big hit with the kids. The food is very good even though it is expensive. There are some activities for kids and adults.

The prices are ok. You can get a excellent cabin for 100-150 a night if you get it anywhere but Fontana. Whereas Fontana is 150+ a night for a nice cabin. The more expensive cabins are very nice. We went walking in the evening and got a good look at some of the unoccupied cabins.

Stayed at Fontana for a week in mid-July, with our two kids and another family from home and their three teens. Would have left after one night if we were making the trip solo, as the cabin was nearly unfit for habitation.

The cabin had large holes in the screens and walls. The floor in the bathroom had a hole 4" across that had been covered with laminate to hide the problem, the shower walls were uncaulked so water was continously leaking out of the enclosure onto the floor. There was limited lighting, lots of charming mexican music from the employees cabin next to ours, and ceiling fans that made sleeping unlikely(no a/c). Likewise, there was no telephone in our room(cell phones will NOT work here) so we couldn't call the front desk, there was no television or radio. The bed linens were not changed in our week. To obtain clean towels, we were instructed to hang our dirty ones on the porch railing - fresh towels are then laid on the porch mid-day.

Our first trip to the Bears Den lounge had the waitress present us with a $15.08 ticket for a domestic draft beer and soda - when we questioned the charge she lowered it to $5.08(a most unlikely total for such an order). At checkout, the $15.08 had reappeared on the room charge.

We inquired at the front desk as to the cost of the breakfast buffet the following morning, and was told $7.50. By the time we seated ourselves the following morning, the charge was $12.

The sound of motorcycles through the village wasn't entirely unexpected, the surrounding country is gorgeous. We hiked extensively, whitewater rafted in Nantahala(about an hour away) and drove to Cades Cove(another 1.5 hours away).

The pool and 'lazy river' water feature is nice for little kids, but has a max depth of 4.5 feet. the lazy river circulates water in a circle, and had tubes waiting for your soaking pleasure. Access to the pool is available to non-guests - we saw a flyer promoting a recreation pass to NC residents. Think about the security issues related to this policy before you let your kids go to the pool unaccompanied.

I would not stay in Fontana again. The cabins may be seriously inferior to the lodge rooms, but the poor customer service and games regarding charges was unacceptable.

This resort could actually be a really fun place to stay, if management was improved. My family visited in June and we stayed in the Dogwood cabins. These cabins are dirty and not worth the money we spent. There was no air and I cut my foot on a piece of metal sticking up from the floor in the kitchen. There are nicer cabins there, though with air. During the day, my family had a great time at the resort. There is a great pool with a very small lazy river. There is an icecream store and a frisbee golf course. A pond is on grounds for fishing, but I really doubt there are any fish in there. We never caught any. At night, the place was miserable. The noise level both nights was ridiculous. We did not get to sleep until after 1 a.m. both nights. Some people (I think they were workers) were squeeling their gold cart up and down the road very late at night at kept it up for hours. We have two small children and they could not sleep because it was so loud. People were out talking very loud because they were intoxicated. Like I said, the nights were miserable. I think if we had a nicer cabin with air, we could have shut the windows and kept some of the noise out, but it was so hot in the cabin we had to leave them open. When I checked out I filled out a comment card and said I would like management to contact me. I still haven't heard from anyone and it's been a month. This place has potential, but not worth the money. Needs updating.
