“Beautiful area, disappointing stay”
Reviewed 19 September 2009

We stayed in a Willow cabin (one bedroom) for three nights. Loved the covered front porch (it rained the whole time). One of the rocking chairs was broken, and none of the outside lights worked. The Grill restaurant was closed for the season, so we ate all our meals at the cabin. Glad I took lots of groceries; it was too nasty to go up to the Lodge (and too expensive). No cell phone service and no phone in the cabin...if you needed any help, you had to go to the General Store (closest place) but it closed at 6 p.m.

The worst part was the water in the cabin. It came out of the faucet looking like it was mixed with milk -- so cloudy. We had plenty of bottled water, thank goodness.

If you're looking for a "back to nature with indoor plumbing" experience, this is a nice place.

I took a trip to Fonatana Resort to give my parents a chance to get away. There were 5 of us in one of the 2 bedroom cabins. The location was awesome. Some of the most beautiful views of the mountains and lake that I've ever seen. I was reminded of the setting from "Dirty Dancing" in the make up of the resort. The cabin was clean and well appointed. (No bugs as experienced by other reviews). The grill served great food at reasonable prices. The lobby of the hotel was beautiful and made me wish we had rooms in there. The road coming into the resort is extremely curvy and was the only part of the trip that most agreed on as a negative experience.
Note, this is not a place to visit if you want to stay connected on a working vacation, make lots of trips to Cherokee, or want a modern Disney type of vacation. However, if you desire rest, a beautiful setting, and a break from the wild and crazy vacations of today, This might just be your kind of place.

My family (2 adults & 1 7 yr old) stayed for a week in the round top (Yurt). We were admittedly spoiled by the excellent accommodations. But other wise the grounds and facilities were great! There was plenty to do and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. We went boating on fantana lake, the Dam is a great site to see. We hung out and played mini golf, baseball, swam in both pools and the lazy river. We went whitewater rafting at "Wildwater rafting center", and our guide "Lee" was awesome! We took the trip to Clingman's dome...a must see for everyone! We went horseback riding, we did try fishing in the trout pond and that was a joke, but it was fun to spend time with the family trying. We BBQ'd at one of the huge fire pits with grills, roasted marshmallows and made friends everywhere we went. I just can't say enough about this place. I am definitely bringing my family and extended family back next year. I am so glad i didn't listen to the negative hype...if your not into mountains, nature and "disconnecting from the world" than go somewhere else.

We stayed at Fontana Village for 5 days in a Willow cabin. It is the smallest cabin they offer, 1 bedroom. The accommodations were decent. They are not luxurious, but they are clean and comfortable. The staff at the Village was polite and accommodating. We got everything we asked for.

There are some obvious management issues within the Village, as they could do a better job with activities, but as long as you go prepared with plans, food and supplies, it is a great get away.

You can get cell service at the Fontana Dam scenic overview. Also, if you stay close to the general store or events center, you can pick up the wireless service easily.

The village was beautiful and relaxing. If you want a good experience at Fontana Village, you do need to prepare with supplies, food and plans, but the village itself was great. It is a perfect place to get away from it all.

We just returned from a family reunion at Fontana Village. The group consisted of 14 adults, 3 teens or tweens, and 1 child. We stayed the majority of the time in basic Lodge rooms (2 Queens or 1 King bed), then the remaining 7 of us moved to a 3 bedroom Cabin for the last night of our trip. To counter some negative posts I read on this site, there were no bugs and I only have knowledge of 1 uncomfortable bed -the sleeper sofa in the cabin, which was to be expected. I even slept in the top bunk at the Cabin and was pleasantly surprised how comfortable it was. At the last minute, we were able to rent a small meeting room adjacent to our Lodge rooms that they set up for us to be able to watch tv & play cards/dominoes together. We ate all of our meals in their two restaurants and both the food & service were exceptional, and well worth the price. The MountainView Bistro was fabulous - between the 18 of us eating dinner there every evening, I believe we tried all of the entrees and there wasn't a single disappointment. Yes, the resort is isolated (no cell phone reception) and it can be an adventurous drive to do activities like wildwater rafting - but that is all part of the experience. The most important aspect of the trip that I wish to relay is how accomodating the every single member of the staff was - - whatever we needed, they took care of it quickly and with much charm and grace. Some staff names I remember are Joey, Adam, Lacey & Ashley - but in all honesty, everyone we dealt with was a pleaure. I highly recommend it.

We camped at the resort, the staff was rude, we had wasp nest all under our picnic area and the desk just advised us that we probably could buy some spay at the market. The grass was knee high and they said they would inquire on when it may be cut. You can use the pool, but its at the resort a good mile up the mountain. You can not get near the river. Everything is old or broken. We had planned to rent jet ski's for the day and a fellow camper advised us they had two that were worth anything and he based it on how it is every year. When we arrived at the marina we were told only one worked but was very easy to roll over, one needed to be fixed, and one blew up. And beware, if you use a check debit/visa card they put a random $200.00 hold on your account until you check out. We left early due to the disappointing camp and then the girl at the desk did not know how to back out the charges. We will NOT be going back there!!!

The area is beautiful; the drive on NC28 (the 'dragon's tail') is awesome. However, my wife suffers from motion sickness and found the ride nauseating. This may sound trivial, but everyplace you may want to go- zip lining, tubing, white water rafting- will require 30min to 1.5 hr trips in the car- a lot of it on NC28! So if you have motion sickness, this may not be the place for you- or pack your dramamine.
The original Fontana village cabins were 'stick built' with 2x4s, hardwood floors and wood siding back in FDR's New Deal in the late 30's. When I was a child (1970's), my family and I stayed at these small, hot (in the summer- no AC- box fan blasting at night) cabins, and fished and hiked. We didn't have much money and this fit the bill, so-to-speak.
Fast-forward to now. My immediate family of four and my parents stayed at the 'Magnolia' level cabins. These are not cabins, these are double wide trailers. Only four years old and they are falling apart (some of the depression era cabins are still standing- still no AC though). There is mold in the closets, loud and poorly vented AC. We demanded to be moved to a second cabin after the first was inundated with the smell of raw sewage on our first night. Second cabin linoleum unglued from floor, cheap plastic sinks, poor and broken fixtures- these trailers cannot handle this area of the country and it shows. If these were 60 or 80$ a night, that would not be a problem, but at 260-270$ a night, we expected much better accommodations.
I recommend the area (caution about motion sick- prone people; and those disturbed by massive numbers of motor cycles), but not the Fontana Village accommodations- seedy and run down (a shame with renovations only four years ago- but again, the trailers they used to replace the cabins are simply not durable enough).
