This was THE hang-out for Gastonia and environs for decades, and the food was very good. People rode from the Beacon (restaurant) to R.O.'s and then back. It was the social thing to do on weekends. A great place to meet your friends while enjoying a barbecue.
It is still good, but my personal preference is Black's Barbecue on 321. Black's slaw is better, in my opinion and the staff is far more friendly.
R.O.'s, however, will remain in the minds of literally thousands of older folk as the place we met, talked, ate and later drag-raced.

This is NOT barbeque, repeat, NOT barbeque. No smoke no wood no charcoal, just an electric oven. If you make the mistake like I did and order "minced" pork, it will come out looking like dry beach sand. I wasn't even sure if it was actually meat. The stuff they call slaw is actually a disgusting pink soup. The only thing I could eat were the baked beans which tasted like they came right from a can. Don't waste your time with this crap.

The food is OK. Not anything special. They ONLY accept cash. Just like the hookers that walk up and down the sidewalk in front of the place. Dont come for the BBQ. There is better. Try Rays instead.

RO's is not a fancy restaurant, it's a fast food place, You can go in, place your order and eat inside or you can blink your lights for a curb hop and have it brought to your car. It's clean and well maintained place. They are very generous with the amount of meat they put on your sandwich, the barbeque slaw is what makes the sandwich. It's been the home for BBQ slaw since 1946, the slaw can be used for a dip for chips. If we're in that area for a week, we eat there at least twice. We would drive the 200 miles for no other reason but to eat there. They also have a mobile units and do catering. They have a website....check them out.

The south is known for many different varieties of BBQ. BBQ means pork in the south, not necessarily something grilled. The thing that makes R.O.s stand out is the BBQ Slaw Dip, it is delicious, with a little kick to it. The meat is moist and lean, but it is not smoked. I enjoyed the food and would return.
