“Average food with good service in a traditional atmosphere”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Visited for the Friday fish and chips and seafood evening . Happy to have simple food but for the price it was very average . I always prefer hand cut chips to cooked from frozen and you can always tell . Fish was ok and scampi out of a packet . Lovely garden and service but food very average pub grub on this occasion

“Excellent no nonsense and traditional pub grub”
Reviewed 5 June 2014 via mobile

This is a pub that does not pretend to be what it is not. It advertises itself as a traditional pub and it is. And it does it very well. No silly smears of sauce on silly bits of slate. Delicious pub grub with friendly and welcoming service. Decent sized portions served quickly.

“Excellent food, staff very welcoming.”
Reviewed 22 September 2013 via mobile

Stayed locally at Goldsborough Hall and had a short walk to the bay horse. It was a quiet, old fashioned sort of pub. The food was easily restaurant quality and the staff just lovely. Highly recommended.

“Absolutely terrible - tiny portions, went home hungry”
Reviewed 9 September 2013

Called in for a double celebration birthday - oldest and youngest in the family. 2 OAP's, 2 children (ages 5 and 7), and 2 adults and a bill for nearly £70. Went home hungry. Thoroughly disappointing.

What did we get?

2 confused teenagers serving us in a friendly, but slightly clueless and unsure manner. Nice beer on tap, but slow to ask you if you would like another beer when your glass has been empty for 20 minutes.

£5 for "kids scampi" - 3 scampi pieces and a "fruit medley" on the plate consisting of a small slice of melon, a small slice of kiwi fruit, 2 grapes slices in half and a lemon wedge. WTF??? Kids want chips, beans and definitely more than 3 deep fried prawns. We had to ask for more food to be brought to our daughters plate as she simply was flabbergasted that all she was having for her lunch was 3 Scampi's and a slice of fruit.

£5 for "kids fish medallions" - given that they were proper fish rather than processed fish fingers they were nice, but again accompanied with the "fruit medley". Oh dear...

£10 each - 2 servings of Adult "Fish Goujons" - 3 of them, possibly 1/2 a fish at the best of times, but even then a very small fish was cut into thirds. Luckily a bowl of chips to share was also included in the meal, but this ended up being split between myself, my partner and 2 hungry daughters. 2 grapes (halved into 4 1/2's, a lemon and a Kiwi fruit slice also adorned our plates). Hardly a hearty Sunday lunch.

£10 - Prawn and Salmon salad - a lot of shredded iceberg lettuce went into this but it kept grandma happy - maybe some form of Marie Rose sauce required?

£12 - "Roast of the Day" - they must be thin animals in Goldsborough as 1.5 thin slices of beef and a Yorkshire pudding were served, plus a small terrine of veg (spuds and the usual). Grandad needs feeding - he could have eaten that twice over and still asked for more.

We ended up having to order 2 adult portions of pudding for our daughters, which were proper size, but not off the £1.50 kids pudding menu - another £10 added on (but happy kids at least following a large dose of chocolate cake).

The waitress was nice enough to put a candle in this however - so some effort was made to deliver a nice experience. Just a real shame we had to go home and make sandwiches after our lunch out.

Seriously - if this pub is to survive June (the proprietor) needs to go out to Carriages, The Malt Shovel, The Tannin Level, Dinos Graze and Grill, The Travellers Rest, So!Bar Knaresborough and a few other local half decent eateries and see that her 1982 based menu with tiny portions and a VERY dated food listing and way of dealing with any "portion size" questions" will be the death of this establishment.

Shame, as the ground and surroundings are beautiful - this pub has a lot of work to do before we visit again.
