Having lived in Mexico for many years, I can tell fairly easily if the mind behind a restaurant is truly Mexican or night. Papas & Beer is the real thing. They have items on their menu that I doubt you will find easily outside of Mexico. They also have some creative new ideas for using typical Mexican-food ingredients.
For example, I had the Warm Salad with beef, and I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of Romaine lettuce, avocado slices, grilled onions, fajita beef, and tortilla strips. My wife and her cousin split the Sizzling Enchilada plate. Portions were so generous that we all took part of our plates home. Prices are very reasonable.
A couple of nice touches at Papas & Beer: The complimentary tortilla chips are served with a delicious bean dip, not salsa. But there is a "salsa bar" with six different choices, and you can try any and all of them as much as you want.
Our local relatives eat here regularly; it's one of their favorite restaurants.
