I flew down from Michigan to meet up with a group of girlfriends, one of whom booked Sunday Brunch here. It was outstanding! Even though I was feeling a bit green from the drive, I managed to eat almost everything. We all ordered something different so we could sample each dish that Mathew made for us. The drinks were great and Hiram and Mathew were the most gracious of hosts. Even though I can't rate the rooms, as we didn't see any, the restaurant, deck and spa (personal tour!) were beautiful, with views to match. We were there in late July and I would have written this review earlier if it hadn't been for a sudden illness in the family. Thank you for being so welcoming, gentlemen! I would highly recommend Fire Mountain.

Hi Karen,

Thank you for sharing your experience at our restaurant Fire + Water. It was a pleasure to host the YaYa's for Sunday Brunch. It was a delight to meet all of you and we hope that you will find your way back from Michigan to Fire Mountain soon, so you can really see what all that this beautiful part of the country has to offer.

Sincerely
Mathew

I want to keep this place a secret but I can't help but express what a wonderful experience my husband and I had here! I searched high and low for a good place to stay for our babymoon that was close to Atlanta and after reading the awesome reviews, we decided this was the place for us. We stayed in the Cloud Climber room which faces the most stunning view of the mountains. The room was adorable, tidy and minimalist which I loved. I also loved that there are no TVs or clock radios to remind you to check the time or tempt you to watch TV.

This place stands apart for many reasons but I would say the biggest reason is that attention to detail and thoroughness is top notch. We were welcomed and made to feel right at home by Anna and Hiram. They ensured we knew the property, where to go and provided us good information on where to explore and eat dinner. We ate dinner in the first evening and it was delicious! I loved that Matthew cooked only in season items locally sourced and my goodness, it was freaking good! The dinner was a quaint affair and we ended our evening sitting on the deck, watching the sunset and enjoying the sounds of the infinity pool.

On our second day, we lazily got up and again, enjoyed the stunning views right out our bedroom window of cloud covered mountains and the chirping of birds. Breakfast was included with our room so we heading just across the way to sit out on the deck and take in all the beauty of the mountain top. We had fresh fruit, yummy coffee and a freshly made breakfast by Matthew. We also partook in the massages which was divine. The spa faces the mountains so it's a very unique experience! Later in the day we took a driving tour with a boxed lunch (prepared by Matthew- again so yummy) and we were so grateful for the map and tips provided by Hiram and Matthew.

My only regret is not staying another day! We cannot wait to go back and maybe check it out in the fall. You will not be dissapointed!

Room tip: I'd recommend a sunset facing room. Also top floor so you don't hear footsteps.

For those travelers with discerning taste, please beware this inn.

My wife and I booked 3 nights (over $1K) in the Laurel treehouse room for our 36th anniversary. Our experience was:

Accommodations:
Contrary to the online pictures, the room is very small, even cramped with a tiny bathroom and a 3X3 shower stall. Inadequate shelving and storage in the bath plus a very small pedestal sink complete the picture. The highly touted wrap around deck is nothing more than a small 3 ft. walkway with a corner table and 2 dirty chairs with a small sunset view through the trees. The boardwalk leading to the room was narrow and very slippery when wet.

Food:
Breakfast and the 1 dinner we had here were very good. Prepared by Matthew, everything was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Hint: even though wine is supposedly included with the (expensive) prix fixe dinner, if you really enjoy wine, you should bring your own bottle.

Service:
Service was dismal. In a nutshell, we can be insulted and berated at home for free so yes, we booked 3 nights but left after 2 with no refund.

Overall, based on our experience and the price we paid, there are far better choices in the Highlands area.

Again, for those travelers with discerning taste, please beware this inn.

We embarrassed and humiliated ourselves so bad, we left early - would be a more appropriate title for this review. During their dinner @ our Fire + Water restaurant during the second evening of their stay this couple became inebriated as the dinner progressed. They were engaging others at their tables and becoming louder and louder. It became apparent as a result of complaints from other dining guests and staff members present that they needed to stop this behavior so that order could return to the dining room and so that our other dining guests could complete and enjoy their romantic dinners @ Fire + Water that evening. Therefore service of spirits was stopped for them. The husband took great offense and started yelling “you are a jerk, you are a jerk” and the wife did not even know what was happening. They departed the restaurant. Peace and quiet returned, romantic music could once again be heard and enjoyed, and our romantic prix-fix dinner continued without further interruption and concluded just prior to sunset which is experienced from each seat in the restaurant having dynamic sunset views that go out 50+ miles.

It turns out that they departed the next day, at some point, which we discovered when housekeeping went to perform maid service in their accommodation mid-afternoon. They never said good-by, they never informed anyone that they were departing, they never checked out, they never turned in their key. We just assumed, as did other guests, that they were too embarrassed and humiliated to continue their anniversary stay at Fire Mountain. Up to the time of the disruption at dinner, their stay in the Laurel Treehouse at Fire Mountain was incredible which they had continuously indicated to staff and all other guests that they came in contact with.

Accommodation: On June 28, 2018 of this year Parade Magazine (parade.com) listed Fire Mountain Laurel Treehouse as one of America’s 26 coolest treehouses. Laurel Treehouse has also been written about in many publications over the years from Southern Living Magazine to the New York Times travel section. The pictures on our website depict a very accurate image of the Laurel Treehouse. There is nothing altered to make it look like a grand gesture. People come to the mountains to be part of nature, not to just live in a room. This is a treehouse accommodation, really how big should it be? The treehouses at Fire Mountain are our most basic accommodations having the least of the amenities that we offer. The treehouse accommodations also are a great value being on the lower end of our rate scale and are extremely popular. If this couple had desired a larger accommodation with more amenities and with more expansive views we have that, but those accommodations do cost more.

The shower in Laurel is 36” x 36” which is of average size. There is 6 ½ square feet of shelves and storage drawers in the bath. Yes the bath has a normal sized pedestal sink. The bath also has a large glass window with long range views to the west. In addition to the bath the accommodation is large enough for a king bed, side tables and three way reading lamps, a chaise lounge with ottoman along with two closets both containing shelving and interior lighting. The walkway decking around the covered deck is 6 ft. wide (not 3 ft. as indicated in the review). The total deck square footage that surrounds the Laurel Treehouse is 807 sq. ft. and is for the exclusive use of this accommodation which is more decking than any other accommodation at Fire Mountain. The decking has a hammock, two portable folding teak chairs with canvas back and bottoms (which are clean) with a teak side table, a large cafe teak table with side teak chairs along with terra cotta pots with Kimberly Queen ferns. The entrance boardwalk from the private parking for the accommodation is a most special feature as it goes for a 120 feet through the woods surrounded by many flowering trees, plants and wild flowers. It is three feet wide. There is another entrance and exist to the accommodation if one should not like to use the boardwalk. Yes boardwalks and outdoor decks can be slippery when wet (ours are pressure washed on a regular basis) as we are in a temperate rain forest here in the Highlands. It is always advisable to wear outdoor athletic type shoes when walking the forests, grounds, outdoor decks, boardwalks and staircases at Fire Mountain and in the National Forests surrounding us. There are two sunset views from the decks both of which are long range out 40 to 50 miles. These views are not expansive (just long range). To make them expansive we would have to cut down all the trees surrounding the treehouses which we are not going to do hence the name Treehouse. If you desire long range expansive views from the top of Fire Mountain we have them in the main lodge building accommodations of the Fire Mountain Inn and from some of our mountaintop luxury cabins.

Food: We are very pleased that this couple found our cuisine to be very good, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection! Fire Mountain is known for top notch locally fresh sourced cuisine served at our Fire + Water Restaurant. Our prix fixe dinners are a great value and far from expensive. Every guest is emailed a dinner menus prior to arrival so that they will know what is provided and the costs. The price includes your starter, entrée, sides, breads, dessert, beverages and your gratuity. We only serve dinner to our guests and we desire for it to be not only great cuisine, but an incredible romantic dining experience with great service. We do not offer expensive wines at Fire + Water. If you desire expensive or top shelf wine we also would suggest that you bring your own.

Service: Service at Fire Mountain is a hallmark which we take great pride in and which is discussed and described in detail in many of the reviews regarding Fire Mountain on social media. No one ever insulted and berated this couple. Quite the contrary. They were having a grand time until they were told “no more drinking”. The husband immediately became incensed, stood up and began to act out even more than he and his wife had up until that point.

Conclusion: We are very sorry that this couple lost control that night as it was very embarrassing and humiliating for all concerned. A very high percentage of our guests return over and over to Fire Mountain and if you are a discerning traveler you will find that Fire Mountain is the perfect place to experience in your travels and a place that you will return to over and over as so many of our guests do!

Fire Mountain rolls out the red carpet in a manner that even some 5-star boutique hotels I’ve stayed in could never touch. From an in-depth checkin, to the personal yet private manner by which your stay is handled, this gem of a place deserves your stay. Cooked fresh breakfasts, majestic views, and being surrounded with the best of nature’s splendor are just a few of their amenities. Though we didn’t try the spa, the quiet and serene within the entire property promises a likely just as wonderful experience. The Highlands area features high-end shopping and golfing for those interested in getting out and about. There are restaurants and eclectic markets to get lost in. Several natural areas featuring trails for hiking, waterfalls and animal watching are a short distance away. A 25min ride into Franklin features all of what most would be familiar with in terms of eateries and shopping, but once you get to Fire Mountain you’d be hard pressed to find an excuse to leave. The proprietors are always available to answer questions and give suggestions, but pride themselves on providing exemplary privacy during your stay.

Do not come here looking for radios and internet connections. There are none!! Even your best attempts and boosting a signal will likely fail. Toss that phone aside, sit out on your porch and enjoy the sights and sounds of solitude.

Fire Mountain Inn is one of the most wonderful places I have ever had the privilege to experience. I stayed for 3 nights in Red Thunder this past week. The views from my room and the property are truly spectacular. The property is beautifully presented, maintained and aesthetically stunning! My room was simply gorgeous, the bed; super comfortable, bathroom; ridiculously luxurious. Not at all what I expected to find in the "mountains.' i loved that there were no fridges, tv nor ac units in the room, simply not needed. They provide ice and coolers should you need and in each room there is an ice bucket, glasses and bottle opener. I also dined like a king here. The food is lovingly and artistically prepared by Matthew using only the best locally sourced and in season produce. Probably the highest quality dining experience you will have in the area, breakfast, lunch or dinner. I was traveling alone and not familiar with the area, both Hiram and Matthew took great care each day to advise me on hiking trails and things to do during my day. This is a very special place. Somewhere you are really treated to "southern hospitality' at it's finest, I can also recommend indulging in a massage in their relaxing spa room. I will not hesitate to return (hopefully sooner rather than later!) with my husband, family and friends or by myself again. An absolute find!!
