Fire Mountain is a great break from the hustle and bustle of every day life. The owners make sure you have everything you need to relax and spend time outdoors. They will tell you where you can find hiking with spectacular views where you will seldom see another person. They know all of the best Highland's Restaurants and are ready with recommendations for everything you need. The Saturday night sunset bon fire is a great time for the guests to gather around the outdoor fire pit on top of the mountain, drink wine and make new friends. Breakfast is always amazing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Fire Mtn. It was exactly what we needed to reconnect without the distractions of TV, telephone and internet. The accomodations were clean and roomy and the sunrises and the sunsets beautiful. We commend the chef for the delicious breakfasts. We couldn't have asked for more. Highlands was very close with very good restaurants. The Bistro hours at Wolfgang's were wonderful. Great hiking with pretty waterfalls were close by.

Can't say enough great things about the accommodations, the location, and the proprietors Hiram and Matthew! We stayed in the Nantahala Room our first night and woke up with the sunrise. They moved us to the other side into the Red Thunder Room so we could see the sunset on our second night. My new bride was also very appreciative of their modern amenities such as the Phillip Starke soaking tubs. The grounds, the art gallery, the breakfast, the breathtaking views and the attention to detail were impeccably achieved with style, grace and sensitivity. Matthew's restaurant suggestion, Cyprus in Highlands, was a perfect fit for us. We will definitely return.

We stayed in "Red Thunder". a beautiful room with a double porch and spectacular mountain views that seemed to go on forever to distant ranges. Mark and, especially, Matthew were perfect hosts. The grounds were lovely, the suggested drives and hikes really great. We have been to the area many times but with Mark and Matthew's advice discovered new adventures. The breakfasts were wonderful. The room and (slightly tight) bathroom are simply but perfectly decorated. Service was unobtrusive but outstanding. We were short of hangers for our clothes but when we came back from dinner the first evening there were extra hangers and the clothes we'd left on pegs were hung up. The only thing that keeps me from giving this lovely inn a 5 is that it is not 6 miles from town as the website indicates but just over 9 miles. As there are no restaurants closer this is somewhat inconvenient.

We are very pleased that this couple had a wonderful experience during their stay at Fire Mountain. We certainly were privileged to have them as our guests and we look forward to welcoming them back to Fire Mountain!

Management would like to clarify the information provided in this review regarding Fire Mountain’s distance from Highlands and the necessary distance to travel to partake of the excellent cuisine offered in the Highlands.

The entrance to Fire Mountain is located exactly 6.2 miles from the village limits of Highlands. The entrance to the property borders one of the three scenic highways that come into the village of Highlands. The drive time from the top of Fire Mountain to the village of Highlands is approximately 8 to 10 minutes.

There are many options available for excellent cuisine at Fire Mountain, in the village of Highlands and in between.

At the Fire Mountain Inn a full breakfast is included in your rate. Our Cabin guests may order the “Mountaintop Cabin Breakfast” to be delivered to their Cabin each morning of their stay if desired.

Both lunch and dinner are available at Fire Mountain, for our guests only by advance reservation. Our current lunch and dinner menus are posted in the Guest Guide that all guests receive immediately upon making a reservation. Fire Mountain dinners are delivered to your accommodation and may be taken on one’s private deck/terrace or in-suite. Fire Mountain lunches and dinners may also be presented in elaborate knapsacks with crystal, china, linens and waterproof blankets to take on excursions to scenic vistas on Fire Mountain or in the surrounding area.

All of the Cabins at Fire Mountain have fully equipped kitchens and post mounted charcoal grills for our gourmands that desire to prepare any or all of their own cuisine. There are three wonderful butchers in the village that may prepare your choices for the grill.

There are two restaurants located a short distance from the entrance to Fire Mountain. The Junction Cafe is located ½ mile drive away (you may hike from Fire Mountain through the forest on our Moss Rock Trail to this Cafe) and the Downhill Grill is located 1½ miles away.

The drive time from the top of Fire Mountain to all restaurants in Highlands is approximately 8 to 10 minutes. Highlands is renowned for its cuisine and restaurants. All guests at Fire Mountain are provided our “Guide to Dining in the Southern Highlands” at the time of making their reservation so that they may be aware of all current options for dining. This Guide includes descriptions of all recommended establishments along with phone and website contact information so that menus may be viewed and reservations may be made in advance of one’s arrival.

The village of Highlands is very fortunate to have three gourmet prepared food markets where one may create an instant picnic lunch or take-away dinner. These delights may be taken on scenic excursions or brought back to Fire Mountain for dining in front of your evening fire, on your deck or terrace at sunset or by the bonfire on Saturday evenings. The bonfire is lit an hour prior to sunset and continues well into the evening hours.

In conclusion our guests may enjoy the wonderful cuisine at Fire Mountain for all meals (much of which comes from our organic gardens and orchards during our High Season months) and never leave our mountaintop during their stay. Guests may dine at two different restaurants located a minute or two from the entrance to Fire Mountain. Guests may dine in Highlands to experience the excellent cuisine of a very large selection of superb restaurants. The gourmet take-out markets in the village also offer grand alternatives for cuisine. Our Cabin guests have the option of preparing their meals in their own kitchens or grilling out on their post mounted charcoal grills.

There are many different and wonderful options for dining, when you are a guest at Fire Mountain here in the Southern Highlands, all of which are very convenient!

I almost did not stay here, based on the few negative reviews. But I called to get info, was persauded by the gentle, attentive staff person this was the real deal - and I am so glad that I paid attention to the postive reviews and not the negative ones. This place is wonderful in all aspects, and while I can appreciate the perspective of the critics, I think those comments reflect a difference in expecations or misunderstanding about what the place is about and not really a description of flaws with Fire Mountain. If you want Internet access, crowds, 24 hour news shows, HBO, etc., this is not your place. But if you want nature, peace, great service, terrific food, and a chance to get away from things, this is the place to go. And, it is a 15 - 20 miunute drive from all sorts of activities: hiking, shopping, water activities, golf, galleries, dining, etc. After doing those things, you get to return to a peaceful, beautiful place where the staff has only your interests in mind. Truly wonderful
The place is beautiful. It is on a mountain just south of Highlands, and though not all rooms have views of the mountains, guests have full access to many common areas, both inside and out, that do offer views. This includes the dining area, decks where one can dine ( food provided on sight or brought in), and Adirondeck chairs to watch the sunset. The rooms are furnished with Shaker simplicity, white linens, all tasteful and calming.
The staff is superb. We said we would be there around 5:30. We arrived at 6, met by a staff person who told us the owners were on vacation - and while we were checking in, the owners called to be sure the staff had met us and that there were no problems. That is attention to detail! To a person, they were attentive, gracious, charming, and helpful, with tips for places to go, to dine, etc. The person who cleaned our room every day would, without our asking, fill our ice bucket and place the white wine we had purchased in it so we had chilled wine on our return. They lent us coolers and gave us detailed maps. We stayed at the Biltmore this spring, paid $500 a night, and the service there was pathetic compared to Fire Mountain.
The breakfasts were phenomenal. Eash day was a different egg, meat, fruit, and bread combo: one day pancakes, bacon, fruit, and frittata; another day, basked eggs, ham, fruit, and home cooked biscuits. Home made jam every day. Anything specific we needed? it was there for us. The 9:30 serving time was perfect: we slept in, went for a pre-breakfast walk, and came back to wonderful aromas and exquisite service.
We have stayed at many B & Bs, and five star hotels. We have looked long for a place where we could enjoy a long weekend on a regular basis. We think we found it with Fire Mountain.

This was planned at the very last minute. My goal was to get away to the NC Mountains and find some peace and RnR. I hit the jackpot. From the time i received a reservation confirmation to checkout everything was so easy. For example, we received a "Welcome Letter" that included our reservation confirmation. You could tell so much careful thought went into prepping you for your stay. I felt like i knew Fire Mountain even before i arrived. When we arrived, they went over the property, asked what you liked to do, went over hikes, and places to eat from fine dining to casual. The room was just perfect, very clean. They have a lovely library and sitting area for you to enjoy at your leisure. The Breakfast was fantastic every morning. I will definitely be back again and again. PS. You can even get a massage in that beautiful setting. Beautiful Sunsets!.... Thank You Fire Mountain!
