Skyline Lodge and Restaurant
Ranked #6 of 7 Hotels in Highlands
Reviewed 10 January 2014

I booked this hotel for a visit to Highlands in October. The drive to Highlands was beautiful, but the Skyline Lodge was a big disappointment. In fact, we got little sleep due to a corporate party that was taking place. This group of loud, rude, so-called professionals did too much drinking and had no consideration for other guests. Unfortunately, the staff did nothing about it. In addition, the rooms are very dated, the mountain views are non-existent and the food is very pricey. Definitely not recommended, unless you want to host an out-of-control party for your group of obnoxiously rude and unprofessional employees.

"I'm not much for sitting around and relaxing. I'd rather bike, hike and explore. Skyline Lodge changed that. What an incredible setting. Perched on a mountain in an old-growth forest of pines and hardwoods. The tranquility puts everyone in a similar mood. Time slowed down but never went away. Every minute was peaceful. The staff was welcoming and addressed us by name at every encounter. Steve at the front desk and Amanda in the restaurant are gems. Rooms are generous in size with a true period feel. Restaurant very good. 10 minutes away but a world of relaxation from Highlands. Book now!! "

I have always wanted to stay here because I love the area and the prices for other lodging is so much higher, plus I like staying off the beaten path. I had average expectations after reading previous reviews. Our first impression was checking in -- it seemed like we stunned the girl at the front desk by showing up and she barely managed to tell us how to get to our room. The room was okay -- had a lovely view of a gorge and nice balcony. The mattress was old, squeaky, and uncomfortable to sleep on. Neither of us had a good night's sleep during our stay. The bathroom had been partially updated - the shower was really nice but everything else was run down. Cracks in the wall, rusted outlet covers, and the overhead fan didn't work. Sigh.

We went to the dining room to eat and were publically humiliated for not making reservations by the bartender/hostess. I'm sure she meant to be funny but we didn't think it was and turned to walk out but she chased us down and offered us a table. If reservations were required, why didn't anyone mention this the two times I called to confirm our plans to stay there or when we checked in? The food was really good, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. At least they told us the restaurant wouldn’t be open for dinner on Sunday night, otherwise we would have had to forage for nuts and berries on the property. After dinner I asked if we could have two wine glasses for the bottle of wine we brought with us and she wanted to charge us $10. Really?

So, Sunday rolled around and we headed out for breakfast in Highlands (I was not spending any more money in the restaurant after our dinner experience) and a hike. Thoroughly enjoyed our day and came back to the hotel to sit in the hot tub and sort out plans for dinner. Some of the staff were sitting in the main lodge area smoking and didn’t acknowledge our presence. When we went back to our room we discovered huge gates across the entrances to the main area, so I guess our plans to sit and enjoy a fire and the view would have to be modified. We would have put a fire in our own fireplace in the room but needed fire logs and, wouldn’t you know it, no one was in the office to sell us one for $6.00.

Needless to say, after wanting to stay there for so long, I was really disappointed in our stay at the Skyline Lodge and have no plans to return. Humiliated in front of other guests, locked out of the lodge, and complete lack of service is not something I ever would have expected.

Room Tip: If you do plan to go, bring your own amusements -- wine, glasses, books, fire logs, and food to snac...

Very rustic but elegant hotel with surprising 5 star Chef! A hidden treasure. Am afraid this review may ruin my ability to get a great room at a great price, just outside Highlands, NC!! Can hear the waterfall out our room and from our balcony!!

The location of the property is nice and the food for dinner and breakfast was truly great, but the room we had was terrible. Run down and extremely musty. Not good, especially if you have allergies and asthma like myself. Sheets were like sandpaper, tons of crickets in the room, and the hot water took forever to run. A shame for a property with so much potential. The people who work there were extremely nice as well.

OH this is important for people wanting to stay in touch with there phones and or internet email etc.... It is hard to find a place that you have full signal here in this area at this place you get full bars so enjoy being connected you can't even get that in town.

Beautiful views, great staff and very well priced! Loved the breakfast basket each morning and the trails surrounding the lodge are great for an easy morning hike. Skyline is the perfect place for a weekend getaway out of the city!
