“Cockroaches and Dog Smell”
Reviewed 16 November 2011

There is no doubt, in staying in one of these cabins, that the owners are animal lovers (of all types, insects included). In first entering the "cabin" (a term used loosely because the buildings look more like single wide trailers with log siding than cabins), both my wife and I smelled the unmistakable wet dog smell. While this was certainly not the relaxing cabin we had hoped for, what really shocked us was the cockroaches that we discovered were living in the walls. We killed a few in the kitchen and, while searching for something to kill the roaches crawling in the glassware, we found a can of cockroach spray that the owner evidently used to control the problem. Not wanting to make the long trek down the mountain late at night, we decided to stay and contact the owners in the morning. Upon speaking with the owners the following morning, we told them about the roaches and that there were dead roaches in the kitchen that we had killed the night before. While apologetic, the owner told us that it was not possible that there were roaches in the unit and that "someone" had brought the dead roaches and left them in the kitchen, in an apparent attempt to blame us for the problem. Lastly, while one cabin does have a view, the cabin we stayed in came with a view of brush, kudzu and a rotting chain link dog enclosure. We have travelled extensively worldwide and stayed in some pretty marginal places but have never felt the need to write a negative review before this one.

Room Tip: Avoid the cabins at all cost, unless, that is, you would like to share the room with some crawling f...

I am the owner of Hot Springs Log Cabins and was just directed to this review of two years ago by a recent guest.
I would like to reassure anyone reading this review that our cabins are full solid log construction with dovetail corners. There is no kudzu on or near our property or anywhere within site of any of the cabins. One cabin does feature a chain link outdoor kennel (no rust) with a plastic dog house for protection from the elements. As neither galvanized metal nor plastic can rot, I am not sure what was meant in his comments. We are very fortunate in Western North Carolina that roaches are not endemic to our area.
My husband remembers that he apologized to a guest during this time frame and commented that the roaches must have hitched a ride in with a previous guest as they not naturally occur in WNC, but that we would take care of it right away. Terminex came out first thing Monday and took care of the problem. (One electrical box in the kitchen did have a few roaches in it.) We questioned our housekeeper, but she had not seen any signs of insects when she cleaned the cabin prior to their arrival. Terminex said would be typical as they are not usually out during the day time.
We are very sorry that there were insects present in the cabin. We took care of the problem as soon as we found out about it. My husband did not mean to imply in any way that the insects were brought in by this guest and we are sorry if his comments were misunderstood. He simply meant for the guest to know that this was surprising news (not a chronic problem) to us as they are not endemic to our area. We do have the cabins treated regularly by the professionals at Terminex.

We rented the Hound Heaven cabin for two nights. Even though we never physically saw our hosts (which was fine), the service they provided was top-notch -- from our introductory email until the last minute of our stay. We found a customized letter with recommendations for restaurants, shopping and recreation (including an easy hike at Max Patch – a must do) and everything we could have possibly needed in the cabin. It was uncanny how the owners have anticipated and stocked the supplies their guests may want or need during their stay. The satellite television had a fantastic selection of movie channels, which we enjoyed while cooking in the well-stocked kitchen. We never even unpacked the bag of DVDs we'd brought with us. We picked up groceries in Newport on the way in from Nashville (there is an IGA with a limited but fresh, good quality groceries) and a larger, newer Food World about half a mile closer to Hot Springs – both on Hwy. 70. The winding road into the area, south of the town of Hot Springs, may be a little nerve-wracking for some. We recommend you go slow and enjoy the drive. Try to arrive in daylight hours to fully appreciate the winding roads and mountain vistas on your drive in. We felt that, in all of our travels, no place had created a sense of immediate relaxation like Hot Springs Cabins did for us that weekend. Upon arrival at Hound Heaven we were immediately impressed with the cabin – its cleanliness, open floor plan and beautiful wood walls, floors and ceiling have a “wow” effect when you walk in (along with the light, fresh scent of pine). The hot tub looked practically new and was a real treat to enjoy several times during the days of our stay. We didn’t eat in any of the town restaurants but, for a small town (which is very quaint), there were plenty of options. But we were, except for our outing to Max Patch, very content to stay at the cabin and enjoy the scenery, the hot tub, the movies and each others’ company. Very romantic, exceedingly beautiful and indescribably relaxing. We cannot wait to return to Hot Springs Cabins. We liked the view, clean air, cabin architecture, hot tub and porch living area, kitchen, and movie channels best. There really wasn't a "least" for this property. I just wish it was closer to Nashville so we could visit more often.

Room Tip: We stayed in Hound Heaven - it had a marvelous view! Check their website for photos of the views of...

We stayed at The Oak cabin for our first anniversary this month. The cabin
was absolutely amazing - I can't say enough great things about it.

Amy and Mike have gone out of there way to provide everything you could
possibly need, and more! We loved sitting on the porch in the cool fall
mornings and relaxing in the hot tub at night under the stars. The
fireplace kept the cabin nice and cozy, and we loved not having any cell
service for the weekend. The cabin was very clean and the bed was SO
comfortable. There were plenty of dishes and linens, and everything in the
cabin was great condition. Everything about the cabin was just perfect.
It was very private and peaceful, and although we never saw another person,
I was glad to know there were other people on the property.

We really appreciated all of the detailed recommendations and directions
included in the binder at the cabin. We had an incredible dinner on the
terrace at the Mountain Magnolia Inn, it was so romantic. We also had
great pizza at the Rocky Mountain Diner even though it took over an hour to
bake. We really enjoyed hiking Max Patch for the gorgeous views and the
Spring Creek Trail at Rocky Bluff.

My husband also completely surprised me by arranging for a GORGEOUS flower
arrangement from Shady Side Florist to be waiting in the cabin when we
arrived. I have never seen such a beautiful arrangement! Thanks to Shadey
Side and to Amy and Mike for including that information on the website.

Overall our stay at The Oak was absolutely amazing. The cabins are top
notch and nothing short of perfect. I wish we could stay at The Oak every
weekend - we can't wait to go back!

Stayed in Hound Heaven. Wanted cabin close to Max Patch & one that would allow us to bring dog. Great location; awesome sunset view from our cabin. Nestled in the mountains, quiet location. Enjoyed the porch; relaxing in the hot tub in the evenings, drinking coffee in the morinings. Cabin had almost everything we needed(could only find 2 washcloths). he cabin was clean enough, but could have been cleaner. This is probably due to the fact they accept dogs, which we were very happy about. All in all very pleased. Would rent here again if ever back in the area with our dog.

My wife and I checked into Hound Heaven on July 12, 2010 around 4 p.m. after a nice drive from North Alabama. After scoping out the place, we went to the Smokey Mountain Diner for supper. My wife had the vegetable plate and I had the fried chicken. This restaurant was one that the owner had recommended we try during our stay in Hot Springs. The second day we took a road trip to Marshall, Nc., and the surrounding vicinity for some laid back fun. While out we ate at GRITS (girls raised in the south) and enjoyed a nice drive in the country. On Wednesday we went to the hot springs for a nice soak. If you have a hot tub at your rental, save the money and use it somewhere else. We have been to other hot springs and found them superior to the local waters. On Thursday we ate at Iron Horse restaurant and went on a walk to Max Patch. Despite the long drive on a dirt and gravel road, the view was beautiful when we got there!

All in all our trip to Hot Springs was very nice. The cabin we stayed in was the Hound Heaven cabin and was fairly secluded. We awoke every morning and watched the rabbits play infront of the cabin. At night we watched the stars twinkle while we soaked in the hot tub. The cabin had almost every luxury you could want or need but didn't have a hair dryer for my wife. Oh well, the directv helped out and we had a blast in Hot Springs, NC.

We just returned from our stay at the Hound Heaven for 5 nights. It was the perfect get-away, very relaxing and peaceful. You never know what to expect when you book a cabin on-line, but the cabin more than lived up to our expectations. (maybe a little less privacy than we expected, but still very private) The views are phenomonal and anything you think you might need (or don't think you need!) is at your fingertips (and if it isn't there, the owners are a phone call away). The cabin was very clean and surprisingly felt larger than we expected. We enjoyed several local hikes, a soak at Hot Springs Spa, a trip to Asheville/Biltmore, stargazing in the hot tub, playing with our dog in the Meadow.....there really is something for anyone. A book at the cabin details the local life, from hiking to dining. Our only disappointments were the broken washer/dryer (repair had been called- but I really did not miss doing laundry- we were on vacation afterall!!!) and having to leave. Would highly recommend to friends and family and hope to treturn one day. The price was right, but the experience was truly priceless.

We stayed here for our honeymoon at the end of January, 2010. After a somewhat hectic drive into the mountains, we finally found our cabin. It was lovely!! The hot tub was perfect and we quickly got in, and spent most of our week there. The owners were great about checking on our reservation and making sure we got in. We were glad we chose the Oak - very private and seemed to have a better view than the others. Words can't describe how serene the place is, and we definitely will go back!! The only downside of the entire experience was that the bed was not only bad but it SUCKED. It had obviously been "used" by newlyweds once or twice before (lol) and squeaked at every slight motion. Go to scratch your face...squeak. Roll over on your side....squeak squeak....etc. Terrible when you have sleep issues - or even if you don't. All the amenities but cheap on the bed, too bad...something like this cabin should have a solid, hearty frame with quality mattress and no boxspring...after all, it IS being used by NEWLYWEDS... but again, this was a great place and I don't want to deter anyone from going.

I am glad to hear that this couple enjoyed their honeymoon stay with us!
Beds are such a matter of personal preference, but we do our best to make sure our guests are comfortable and enjoy their stay.
(We do also receive many compliments on our beds - Quality Serta mattress over box springs with a memory foam topper.)
My husband and I personally stayed at The Oak in late February just to sleep in the bed and make sure everything was OK. Ironically, he said he preferred our bed at home, whereas I found the bed in The Oak more comfortable than ours at home.
I just wanted to answer this couple and thank them for posting a review about our cabins. We will personally check the bed out thoroughly next time we clean the cabin and make sure the frame and box springs are not damaged. I will look into platform beds as well.
Thank you!
