This motel used to be an Econolodge. The highway signs and road signs all say Econolodge.
Being on the road and tired, sometimes you just have to stop, This "town" referred to as "friendly Kenly" (according to Wikipedia, and a billboard leading up to this off ramp) apparently never informed the staff of Motel6.
We checked in, and the girl behind the desk was fine, her manager became a bit brusk and bristly. Went to our room and spent a quiet night. Nothing noteworthy.
We decided to stay over because the area was quiet, and we thought we'd get some much needed rest, having just left a week in NYC.
In the morning, a barrage of calls and knocks at the door told us we had to get out immediately, as check-out was 11, and it was now 12! First of all, no one stated a check out time to us, and we were discussing staying over, so that we could catch up on some rest. We were told to leave the premises until we had paid for the next night. um...okay...
So, as I packed the car up, a huffy angry woman paced outside the room demanding to know when were we going to be out. Horrible! Truly. There were about 2 other people in the whole motel. This exit is really a truckers stop over, with 3 large gas-stations, and restaurants. But it is a really quiet, secluded area, so we thought we could get some things done.
Well, we had errands to do, so we left, and returned later to check in all over again.
My receptionist was the grumpy woman who had been outside our room earlier. So, I thought I would be really nice to her and chatted a bit. Just really a sort of rude woman. Shocking, really.
When I ran out to pick some food up, my husband called to say that someone was off in the woods behind the hotel shooting a rifle. Okay... Odd.
But we had been getting some rest, and decided to stay for one final night instead of repacking all over again. And I told the girl at the counter later in the evening.(Not grumpy Mary). This girl was fine, nice, and said she would make a note.
In the a.m., at about 5 minutes to 11 a,m,, our phone rang and it was the grumpy angry woman, Mary again. Asking if we were staying or leaving, because she "told me the day before that checkout was at 11, so we had better be paid or leave before 11. period!!!" Oh, and she used my FIRST NAME, like she was my school teacher, chastising me for not turning an assignment in. "Jennifer, I told you, and you signed a paper saying you understood the checkout time. So now the computer says I am not doing my job because you are still in that room, which is not paid for yet!" Seriously!?! Who talks like this! Customer service at it's finest, right?
So, I went up to the desk and gave her the payment and told her, that "Look, we have traveled all over the country, and Europe, and NEVER been treated like this." I did tell her that I happen to write for TripAdvisor, and I was sorry (not really anymore, at this point...) but I would have to blast them.
This is all true, and sad to say, but people like this should NEVER be put in a customer service position. It just is a really horrible thing to have to interact with them.
The front desk has a computer printed sign on it (from the Econolodge days,,,) talking about undeclared pets and a $200 fine, and also not bringing pets into the breakfast area. Well, instead of printing a new sign, some one just took a pen to it and scratched out a few things that didn't relate to them. Truly, it looks horrible. (my camera was full, so I couldn't snap a photo, sorry...)
This is NOT a Motel6 policy about undeclared pets, also Motel6 doesn't serve breakfast (yet another remnant from Econolodge, as is the wafflemaker they leave out on counter, and the humongous roadway billboard lying in the parking lot).
The drinking fountain was broken, the pool was not available, and there were no fitted sheets. Just a flat sheet that did not fit, and kept popping off, oh, and of course, the napkin-sized bath towels, ( no hand towels), which were so rough you could have been using a loofah...
Stay away from here...
