Quinta do Monteverde

We stayed at the Quinta do Monteverde for 4 days in July 2012. The quinta itself is a hidden gem (in the literal meaning of the words; tucked away behind high walls in a small township hit by urban sprawl) with a large and lush garden. The main building and surrounding houses have been wonderfully restored and provides a nice setting for a very relaxing stay.

The kids enjoyed the pool and adjacent tennis court and the garden is large enough to not interfere or disturb other guests. The facilities provided in the cottages proved perfect for our use; we did not cook ourselves but the necessary utensils are present for preparing lunch/sandwiches/tea & coffee/fruit etc., and the kitchen area was cleaned spotless every day. The beds provided in the cottages are a bit to the small side (probably to be expected for Nothern Europeans), and one of the beds is a sofa bed, hence less comfortable. Next time we will settle for an apartment.

Our hosts organised a nice dinner one of the evenings at Quinta do Monteverde. While this may not necessarily be economically favourable - the seaside restaurants in the village are inexpensive compared to more tourist-ridden regions of Portgual, although you have to walk quite a bit from the quinta - we and especially the kids enjoyed the dinner as an example of fine dining with silver cutlery, crystal glasses and fine table cloths etc., yet in a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere

There is no way I can describe honestly the place, anything I say is not enought. The place is amazing as is the hostess, Fatima. Everything is perfect to the details, from the premises to the breakfast, as good and complete as anyone could desire. Just go, no regreats here.

This lovely family home is the epitome of the best of what Portugal has to offer in the way of comfort, welcome, amenities and relaxation. It is a walled mansion house and estate, run by a Portuguese couple, who are the owners. It is within a vilage (Castelo do Neiva) just a mile inland from the coast in the North of Portugal, about 15 mins drive south of Viana do Castelo - less than an hour's drive from Porto. The accommodation is very comfortable, the breakfasts are top quality and the hospitality is wonderful - we just keep going back, as we cannot imagine finding anywhere better. Swimming pool, tennis court, bikes, absolutely safe for chidlren.

Room Tip: Go for one of the cottages - each one sleeps 2 (+ 2 children if required) - independent but just 1 m...

We have just returned from a week's family holiday in the Terrace House at QdM. The house was nicely secluded from other properties on the estate but still enjoyed all the amenities of the property - pool, excellent breakfast, complimentary tennis and the outstanding hospitality of Fatima and Jose. The terrace house does not have a sea view. A particular highlight of our stay was an evening meal prepared by Fatima which allowed us to mingle with other guests and enjoy food more imaginative than provided at many Portugese restuarants. Free wifi is available. Porto is about 45 mins drive or 90 mins by train from Viana do Castello (possibly advisable to avoid the Porto traffic and the terminus is right by the Porto Cathedral). Viana itself is 15 mins drive north and a very attractive town on the coast. Good beaches, sparsely populated, run north and south.
Good trips out include to the stunning national park of Penedes, about 60 mins away, and along the coast road to Valenca and Moncao on the Spanisg border. Also worth going to Guimaraes - don't miss the Ducal Palace which gets snooty reviews in some guidebooks but has been superbly restored.
My only minor quiblle with QdM is that there is no guest information pack in the property. Fatima happily provides all you could wish to know, but after a while we started to feel we were imposing. In summary - beatiful and well appointed in a very attraactive part of northern Portugal.

Room Tip: The suite in the main house is stunning.

The Quinta is tucked away behind electronic gates about a mile from the beach. The surrounding area is now built up and what was once countryside is now a rather ugly ribbon of development. Wonderful old Quinta renovated to an amazingly high standard. There are rooms in the main building and also nearer the swimming pool. Everything is spotless. Breakfasts were excellent too. Fatima and Jose are wonderful hosts and will help you with finding nearby seafood restaurants. The beach nearby is not actually that good and covered with seaweed when we were there - a bit scrappy. If you want better beaches go above Viana to Arga - spectacular long beach with dunes and crystal clear water and waves to surf. Viana is about ten minutes away across the bridge and a pleasant town to explore. We will return!

This is been the third year my wife and I spent some days in the Quinta.
It would be fair to say that we now feel like being at home and we consider Fátima and José more friends than hosts.
Sharing Images and personal experiences will tell little of what you can find there.
You should go and then will understand what I mean.
However I will put some words trying to summarize our feelings:
Peace, relax, charm, taste, friendship, freedom, beauty...
Just try it !!

I have just got back from a week's holiday in Portugal, three nights of which were spent here. The quinta has a lovely relaxed atmosphere - you are very much left to yourselves, but someone is always around to help if you need something. It feels like a home, rather than a hotel. This isn't the place for someone who wants a 24 hour reception or a hotel restaurant they can eat in every night - it is much more like a lovely bed and breakfast with lots of extras thrown in.

The quinta is decorated very nicely and is very comfortable. We stayed in the Baptista Room, which is a twin room (I should note that one review says that beds are not comfortable - I didn't find this at all, although I am usually happy with any bed). The room was very clean with a very nice bathroom. The swimming pool and tennis court are both great, and the gardens are pretty. There is plenty of space for parking.

The breakfast was very good (I read some reviews that complained about the breakfast, and am not really sure what the fuss was about!). We arrived on a Sunday. There is, apparently, never dinner on a Sunday. In fact, we only had dinner at the quinta on one night. It was a very good, generous, good value set menu. I would have liked to have eaten there more - that would probably be my one real criticism about the quinta: it would have been nice to have been able to eat there more, rather than having to walk/drive/get a taxi to local places that, in my opinion, were not as nice.

The final thing to say is that some previous reviews have said that you cannot pay by card. Perhaps this has changed, but we were able to pay by card, and did so.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This manor house was built in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Cunha Lobo Barbosa and Sottomayor family just 1 km from the sea. In 1820, the Genoese Judge Luigi Vital Monteverdi married the owner of the estate and the house became to be known as Quinta do Monteverde. The manor house was completely renovated but the interior retains the touch of the seventeen hundreds. Quinta de Monteverde is a walled estate between the hills and the sea and close to the river mouth. In Castelo do Neiva, the sandy beach rolls on and on; sand dunes and unspoilt stretches lend a wonderful sense of isolation to the surroundings. ... more   less
