We stopped in Laurinburg by chance and stayed hours longer than we anticipated because of the fascinating John Blue House and Museum. (There are other buildings on the site, but we didn't see them.)
The house is a splendid architectural restoration showing what one successful entrepreneur could accomplish a hundred years ago in a small city. And the terrific museum is as much about U.S. social history as it is about Laurinburg's. It unfolds like a huge, secret speakeasy through the doors behind a tidy used bookstore.
We never knew about the John Blue Center before, but it's definitely worth a stop.
