The Esseola Lodge is a delightful old, small hotel in the midst of georgeous gardens, etc. The rooms are clean, comfortable, well appointed and spacious with all of the little things that you would want.
The restaurant, however, was a disappointment. The Thursday night seafood buffet, which has drawn raves from others, was generous in variety, but disappointing in reality. What was labelled as "Maine lobster tails' were smaller than any legal lobster taken in Maine (maybe South Africa), and had been frozen and thawed (perhaps re-frozen??!!) such that it was virtually impossible to remove the tiny morsel from its shell. The crab meat was wonderfully presented in large lumps, but lacked the traditional variety of sauces, the tomatoe mozzarella salad did not come with basil or olive oil, etc., etc. The hot dishes had two seafood entrees and several sides, but were insipid in appearance and flavor, but the sliced-to-order roast beef was quite tasty.
I suspect the chef does his best work from the regular menu.More
