“2nd stay just as wonderful!”
Reviewed 16 May 2009

We came back as promised 2 years later to visit a friend who lives nearby. The bathroom in the Milkhouse has since been renovated, which was a pleasant surprise. Other than the hot water not being quite hot enough, everthing was as wonderful as it was before-from the breakfasts to the bedding. Francois and Christine went out of their way to accomodate our 5 year-old as well, serving her pancakes when we had spicy huevos rancheros. Now my daughter even asked why we don't have such wonderful breakfast at home! Another highlight was playing petanque (French lawn bowling) on Francois's customized court on the incredibly beautiful grounds.

Francois and Cristina were our innkeepers and were absolutely wonderful. The inn has recently gone through some renovation - for example, our bathroom appears to have been completely redone (with the neat exception of a saved timber/brick wall enclosed in glass). The outside has lovely gardens and makes you really feel at home. We stayed in the 1801 room.

To start, we were hesitant to book due to the lack of reviews on tripadvisor. I called and booked the reservation, and had to follow up as we did not receive a confirmation. However, it could not have turned out better. Apparently, they recently installed internet access. We are looking to relocate to the area, so the wireless access was extremely helpful. In addition, Francois had several brochures/maps available for the area, which along with his restaurant advice, were very helpful. We can recommend Top of the Hill and Crook's Corner.

The inn itself is a historic site and has been very well preserved. The inn was originally a log cabin, then converted to a school. There were three phases of building. Francois was very knowledgeable on the history. They have done an excellent job of maintaining the history of the site, yet have modern conveniences (A/C, bathroom, wireless).

Breakfasts were fantastic. Cristina is the cook and makes homemade scones, muffins, etc in addition to fabulous waffles with fresh fruit, and then eggs the second day with an incredibly good salsa. Apparently they lived in Mexico for awhile. Francois went out of his way to accommodate our odd schedule. One night we missed the two-hour wine window, yet he offered to bring us a couple glasses - much appreciated after a day of driving around looking at houses. We left very early on Saturday, missing the breakfast window. He kindly offered to bring us freshly baked muffins meant for the morning meal and a coffee and tea pot.

We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

  • Liked — The historic nature of the inn, yet it had the important modern conveniences
  • Disliked — It was about 10 minutes west of Chapel Hill, which meant a longer drive the Raleigh than was ideal
