“GrandKids Love to Tube the River”

Every summer when the grandkids visit, we always go to Fire's Creek Recreation Area for a day of picnicking, river tubing plus water fall climbing and sliding. Lots of fun for all of them....especially the 8 to 14 crowd! Most times in late summer larger rocks are moved around in the creek to make somewhat of a flume type path that the tubes kinda stay in as the kids go down the river. It's lots of fun...there are some picnic tables, walking paths plus some vault style toilets. Primitive camping is nearby and within walking distance. There are some very nice camp sites. This listing shows Fire's Creek in Murphy, but actually it's between Murphy and Hayesville off Hwy 64.

The only reason I did not give this an "excellent" rating is that the foliage of the trees does not allow a good view of the falls as you stand at the bottom. However, the hiking trail around the falls gives you other glimpses of the falls. There are picnic tables along the lower stream, so is a lovely place for a picnic lunch. Bring along a tube and you can spend time tubing along the lower stream (and while I haven't done this personally, I've been told the water can be very cold).

We actually visited in 2009. Beautiful river and falls and easy to get to. A paved trail over a footbridge and paved trail for the handicapped. Hiking trails along and across the river. Optional gravel road drive up the the top of the mountain was gorgeous and sometimes a little unnerving was well worth the drive. At the top were more horse trails, river and hiking trails in the 25-mile Rim Trail in the Fires Creek back country area.

Fires Creek is a natural, wooded, bear sanctuary filled with a running mountain creek, water falls and hiking trails. It is nature at it's best. It is a bear santuary so do be alert and also keep an eye where you step as you hike (NC is known for it's snakes - Copperheads) so hiking boots not flip flops at Fires Creek. Many children like wadding in the running creek. It is so beautiful at Fires Creek. So *back to nature*. Have been there several times and it never disappoints - relaxing and beautiful.

We were told this would be a nice place to take the kids for a picnic and to play in the water. It is very scenic. It is in bear country and there are many signs warning visitors about bears. I do not recommend going in the water-it is cold and very fast-moving-I was knocked down and carried a distance, unable to stand or swim to the side because of the current. Fortunately I was alright, but this would be a very frightening and possible fatal experience for a child.
