We've been going to the Carolina beaches for years, from Kitty Hawk down to Wilmington and find a common thread for the seafood restaurants - most are average at best and many are just overpriced tourist traps. Since this was our first visit to Sugar Creek, we were kind of expecting the same. However, we were pleasantly surprised. Not blown away, but we had a very good meal.
Overall, the service was excellent, with a very friendly and attentive waitress. Just the right blend of attentiveness, without hovering over us all night. A skill many servers just don't understand. All of our meals arrived promptly and as we ordered.
The atmosphere is nice. A bit noisy and the tables are a bit close, but the nice view of the sound offsets that.
The menu was extensive and reasonably priced for a resort area. Two of us ordered shrimp and grits, which I waited for with crossed fingers. So many beach restaurants serve "rubber" shrimp or seafood that tastes like it's been frozen for months. Grits can be absolutely hit or miss as well. But I was running the OBX marathon the next day and wanted some nice high carb fare, so I was willing to give it a try. We were not disappointed. The shrimp was very good - nice texture, cooked right, though it could have used a bit more seasoning. The grits were perfect!
Overall, the evening was a pleasant surprise. Part of this is due to low expectations among the beach restaurants, but Sugar Creek is still a good place to dine, regardless of location.
