“Horrible Place!!”
Reviewed 21 July 2013

Room smelled horrible! Window AC very loud and didn't cool well. Comforters on bed had stains on them. Very small room. Bathroom very, very small and not clean. Tile floors had stained grout and looked like mold. TV didnt work. Manager stood outside of our room smoking and was NOT nice. You could hear EVERYTHING in the room next to us. Old washing machines and junk sitting around parking area. Parking was bad!! Looked like they were trying to remodel rooms right on the ocean but other rooms are HORRIBLE!!! Stay away from this place!!!

We are sorry you had an unpleasant experience at Dolphin. We pride ourselves on having clean, affordable oceanfront rooms. July is our busiest month and most crowded, so we hope you can come back and see us and try one of our newly remodeled oceanfront rooms that open right out onto the beachfront. Dolphin has been a favorite for families for generations, and we continue to look for ways to improve the guest experience.

I have been coming to the Dolphin Motel for many years. Jim and Wanda, the managers, have always made my stay here at the Dolphin Motel a wonderful and relaxing stay. I can not say enough wonderful things about the Dolphin. This little gem of a motel has it all....... A beautiful ocean front, a super clean pool, pet-friendly rooms, plenty of parking, barbecue grills, picnic tables and managers on site. I have stayed in many of the motels down on the outer banks for over 30 years but this motel, by far, has been the most consistently clean and management is on top of all of your needs at any time of the day or night. If you want a quaint, quiet place to stay with your family, by yourself or with your spouse, this little gem of an ocean front motel is the place to come.

I am a very easy to please and easy going person but this motel needs a face lift! The staff was very friendly and helpful.. however the rooms were a little dated (which I can handle). They were small and the bathroom was okay. They obviously put in a newer shower, but the sink had absolutely no counter space which made doing make-up or even brushing your teeth difficult. There was no microwave or hairdryer which would be nice to have! However the biggest problem I had was the fact that the a/c unit was a very very old window unit and sounded very loud.. I also I think it was full of mold because everyone in our party became sick by the end of our stay. All in all the location is very nice and beach access was awesome but it needed a little TLC!

As an older Nags Head style motel, we continue to make improvements to the property, including renovations to select bathrooms plus updates to flooring, new carpeting, etc. We have added new furniture and mattresses this offseason as well. Guests enjoy the super easy beach access and laid back atmosphere of Dolphin Motel. Our room A/Cs are typically are at most a few years old, and do not have mold issues - the beach climate can create some dampness. We do hope you will return and have another stay at the Dolphin Oceanfront.

I reviewed this motel in 2011. Was in area recently and decided to look in on the old place and show my family the crappiest motel I have ever been inside. Well---make a liar out of me! Many of the issues I described look as if they are being remedied. The ocean front rooms now have sliding doors that literally open to the sandy beach. You could not be closer. The exterior has been painted and there are new windows all around. There used to be window units in the old windows so perhaps there will be central AC? Through a window I saw mattresses ready to be tossed and old mini-fridges gathered around so there might be new furnishings on the horizon. It's about time this place had some investment, the location can not be beat.

Room Tip: Look over your room before you accept it. Check the water and plumbing.

Thank you for your review. We are committed to improving the guest experience at the Dolphin. This offseason we have undergone some major renovations, including as you noticed new sliding glass doors on the oceanfront rooms, new carpet, tile in many rooms. We have also purchased new furniture, new beds and made other property wide updates. We hope you come back again and see us in Nags Head!

Not knowing what to expect when I booked a reservation, i was very pleased. The Managers were very friendly and helped suggest places to tour and restaurant recommendations. They have renovated alot of rooms after they had some Sandy damage, but it gives the old-style motel a very modern look. The rooms are clean. The beachfront is great. We loved being able to walk to the fishing pier each day. Great launching point for Hatteras, Manteo, etc. We'll be back this summer!

This was our 2nd time staying at the Dolphin. The last hurricane that went through gave them enough insurance money to redo the rooms faceing the ocean with doors that open right onto the beach. BUT! They are chargeing a lot more money for them too. The room was very basic. No phone or other amenities such as breakfast, tissue, shampoo, conditioner etc. For that price we could have stayed next door at the Comfort Inn and been more comfortable, just would have had to walk a few more steps to the beach. We paid much more for the room than we did 2 years ago. New doors are expensive, I guess.

Room Tip: Was fun having a door to the beach but it is not necessary. Other rooms are only a few steps away fr...

My husband and I have not taken a vacation in 6 or 7 years. We picked the week of 'Sandy' (weeks in advance) to stay at The Dolphin Oceanfront Motel, in an oceanfront room. We were given our choice since there weren't many guest, because of the storm. We arrived way before check-in on Friday and chose our room. The room was clean and had microwave, fridge, and a large coffee pot (which in itself was a plus). The walls and ceiling were (like the pictures) hard beautiful wood and gave ya the feel of a cabin.Plenty of room for us and our chiauhauh's. The awesomeness of opening the patio doors and hearing(and seeing) the ocean waves were so relaxing. We were suppose to stay for 3 nights, but had to leave after the 2nd night, because of 'Sandy'. (Waves were all the way up the beach and pounding patio doors.) Jim, the manager, was a very, very nice and helpful person. We will go back there hopefully, often. PS- Were refunded 1 nights stay, so Thank-you,Mr. Jim for that and the great customer service.! Hope you made it through the storm OK.
