It amazed us when we moved here the history that is within this little town. If you are visiting take a trolley tour from Tryron Palace to see and hear about the town. Grab a map and find the bears! I still chuckle when I am asked what they mean because I once did the same thing although we didn't have 40+ of them around town at the time. But don't let downtown keep you, there is so much more to do. Do you LOVE steak? Head to Attitudes Pub & Grill in Riverbend.. but remember the name but I guarantee you'll have the best steak ever. Check out Green springs for a true "red-neck" water park. Or head to Flanners Beach for some relaxation. So much to do, and to see.

Beware! They need at least 6 paying customers to conduct tour. Although we called ahead this was not mentioned and we detoured here for the purpose of this tour. Initially it seem there would not be 6 so we offered to pay for the 2 extra tickets needed. Both the driver (Joe Hudson) and the guide (John Muth) were agreeable to this. Luckily, minutes before the schedule tour time about 8 people showed up. The driver, Joe was great. The tour guide, John, was wonderful. He was colorful, entertaining, energetic, and extremely knowledgeable. (We did the 11am Tuesday morning tour). There were 2 great stops, Cedar Grove Cemetery and Christ Church. Christ Church was beautiful. The church had detailed, intricate painted glass windows (apparently old school way of Church windows before stained glass). The Church was gracious enough to allow us the use of their restrooms. Visit www.newberntours.com or call the lovely helpful Lisa 1-800-849-7316 for more information. On the way home from our trip to NC we did the best of and worst of. Hands down, unanimous vote was our New Bern Trolley Tour. You won't be disappointed. My aunt who was traveling with us was a docent at the US Navel Academy in Annapolis Md. Patsy says it was one of the best tours she has taken. This is a must do if visiting New Bern.

The tour was an awesome look into the past. So much colonial history in this quaint town!!! Note: we were there in mid-March when tours don't operate on Tue or Wed. I called ahead ( on a Monday) to find out that tours only run at 2:00. What they didn't tell me was that they will not run unless there are at least 6 people. I would recommend calling ahead just to be sure. Spend some time shopping downtown after the tour!

The tour picked us up at the Doubletree. very convenient. The driver and tour guide were both top notch! This was one thing I really wanted to do while here. Learned lots about New Bern history, including why it's called the "city on wheels".... history of moving houses between lots for sometimes egotistical reasons. Fascinating history... Revolutionary War, Civil War, Pepsi, old churches, political leaders, etc. The tour guide is a local and made this very entertaining... he has a gift for bringing history to life. Loved it, loved it, loved it! At $16, a real bargain. Riders on the tour were from Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland, Iowa, and I think Tennessee. Shows what a great appeal New Bern has and what a great vacation site this is!

We recently vacationed near Top Sail Beach, N.C. on the Atlantic Ocean and took a day trip to Historic New Bern, N.C. We visited the Visitor's Center first and got tickets ($16.00/adult) to tour the Palace and several other historical homes. The tour was excellent with a great Docent who could answer every question we had. Each individual historical home we toured also had excellent and knowledgeable Docents. The town of New Bern is lovely and is being well preserved. After we toured the palace/homes we had lunch at a Cafe' located right on the River at the Visitor's Center and it was a very, very good lunch with good service and they aimed to please. We ordered tuna fish salad and told our waitress we wanted to share it . It came with a side order and we chose mac and cheese. When she brought the lunch she had a HUGE amount of mac and cheese on two separate plates with the huge sandwich halves and a pickle spear on each plate as well. It was a full meal for two for the price of one! After lunch we got tickets for the town trolley tour . . . . it is a 90-minute tour and well worth every penny we paid . . . $15.00 each. The trolley made several stops where we could actually get off the trolley and the Guide explained the sites in great detail. It was a wonderful, wonderful tour and we saw things that we were able to go back to visit on our own after the tour ended, i.e. the National Cemetery, historic Mitchell's Hardware Store and the PEPSI COLA MUSEUM among others. I would HIGHLY recommend the trolley tour . . . maybe you'd want to do that first thing to get an idea of how to plan the rest of your day. The reason we did the Palace and Historical HOmes first was because the woman in the Visitor's Center told us a tour was just about to leave and we could still make it . . . . so we took her advice, which was fine too.
There are many, many great Seafood Restaurants in this River town . . . the trolley guide said he could not specify one being better than another . . . he said they are ALL EXCELLENT! If you start out early you should be able to do all that you'd want to do in New Bern in one day, but if you spend the night there I'm sure you could fill two days without a problem.
