My husband and I were only passing through New Bern and wanted to get a feel for the historic district. Friends of ours from Edenton, NC had stayed at the Aerie Inn and recommended it to us. Here I might mention that we do not usually stay in a B&B preferring the annonymity of hotels. However, we decided to give the Aerie Inn a try as it is within easy walking distance of the main part of the town.
We never - even for one moment - regretted our decision. From the moment we were welcomed at the front door, Marty and Michael were so gracious and welcoming that we felt at home. The Inn is beautiful and spotless. We were given a tour of the available rooms and chose the very large, beautiful and bright "Carolina Room" with a king-size bed, fireplace and its own bath. This room is at the bottom of the stairs right next to the front door and the common/living room.
After settling in, we were treated to refreshments and conversation before walking to town for dinner. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll after dinner and returned to a very quiet inn. Next to our bed was a machine that played soothing sounds to sing one to sleep but we must not have needed it as we fell asleep and were so comfortable that we never heard the train that came through during the night! This definitely was a comfortable room as we slept just as well the next night.
My all-important 1st cup of morning coffee was waiting for me in the dining room. Breakfast later on was a choice of three: omlette (my choice), pancakes or french toast, and bacon. First was a small but delicious baked fruit compote and juice. This was a delicious and beautifully presented breakfast. However, I do like oatmeal and asked if I could have it the next morning. I did and it, too, was delicious and beautiful fruit along with it.
We truly were sad to leave and would have liked to stay for at least a week. We like to explore places and there are lots of things to see and enjoy both within walking distance and outside of town. I forgot to mention that private parking for our car was just behind the inn.
I heartily recommend this B&B and wish the owners well. I believe they are not only wonderful innkeepers but wonderful folks as well.
