“Over priced and room was not clean at all”

My husband and I made reservations for one nite based on good reviews. Knowing it would be out dated ok with that. We checked in and opened our door and was immediately hit with a strong cigarette smell. I am pregnant and would not have made this reservation had we been told it is a smoking facility. The bedspread was so stained up and the white towels/wash cloths had short black hairs all in them that had obviously not been cleaned. The toilet seat had fecal matter on it and our feet were sticking to flooring as well as in the kitchen. The manager on duty was in no way shape or form going to help us or refund anything after talking to him twice about these conditions. It was our anniversary and thank goodness we had some friends on the island that we were able to stay with. We did not stay in the motel that night and returned the key the next morning and still nothing was done about this situation. First experience staying in a motel and last. Places like this should tell anyone with making a reservation that this is a smoking facility period and that it is extremely out dated and not clean up to any standards. The Oak Island Health Dept will most def be notified of these conditions as well as pictures for people to see how disgusting this place is.

This motel has a wonderful location, just two blocks from the pier and walking distance to many restaurants and a sports bar. It has direct access to the beach and views of the ocean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the motel is in desperate need of renovations. The carpeting and furniture are unacceptable -- extremely old, worn and dirty. We have stayed there several times because they allow pets and we want to bring our dog to this pet friendly beach. But this time is the last straw. It is just too dirty. We didn't see any bugs though -- amazing considering how dirty it is. We love the location and really wish they would do major renovations. Just updating the units is not enough. The motel needs to be thoroughly renovated. I have rated the cleanliness as poor, though this is not the fault of the maids who were extremely attentive and helpful. The maids could not possibly clean the filthy carpets and furniture, which simply needs to be replaced.

Motel staff was very friendly. Great location. Motel is old, but well taken care of. Room was small, but extremely clean. Great mattress. Was overcharged on my bill. Contacted the manager, and was quickly taken care of. Be sure to eat at the Flying Fish restaurant, across the street at the Oak Island Pier. Excellent food. Pool was closed due to being off season. No restaurant on site.

Room Tip: This motel is pet friendly.

My husband and I took a weekend away from the kids and stayed at the island resort , we have stayed here since the early 90's. if you are expecting a Marriott then keep looking, if you want a nice older hotel were everyone is friendly and the location is great , this is it ! yes it is older but the staff and location make up for that and we had a 2 bedroom apartment and had no problems! Will be escaping from the kids again and going back to our Island Resort!

If you smoke and have dogs you may have no choice on Oak Island. The hotel is run down; outdated; and falling apart. There are no curtains only mini blinds, So bright at night in the room you can read a book without turning on the lights in your room. The window AC will make your ears ring after awhile.
I had to go to LOWES and buy heavy duty garbage bags and Duct TAPE so we could cover the windows the second night. The white socks I had on in the room were trash. They were so black and nasty the would not come clean. The windows do not open so there are no ocean sound and the room wreaked of pet and smoke.
For $120 a night it was one BIG DISSAPOINTMENT and kinda disgusting.

I give it a 4 out of 5 primarily because it is NOT a Hylton. But the staff are extremely nice and the place was very clean (though the furnishings were not new or updated). We stayed over a weekend and loved the close proximity to the beach, pier and fresh seafood. The one thing they DON'T tell you is that you are not supposed to "leave the premises and leave your dog in the room". Since our dog is well behaved and crate trained, we did leave her when we went out to eat -- I'm sure they don't want big dogs just left running WILD in the room. The pool is pristene and staff are always checking on things and asking if you need anything. I highly recommend this hotel!

I stayed here with the family and definitely can understand the mixed reviews now.

This place is a typical old school beach motel (but at relatively high prices for what you get). The maintenance has been neglected so you will see plenty of dingy/cracked/worn out/run down items in your room. We actually kept our shoes on the entire time in the room - other than kicking them off right before getting under the covers.

The units all have their own window unit AC's, but ours did keep the place cool. So, it'll be a bit loud, but cool.

One really bad thing was no additional security locks other than the keyed door handle - so whomever has a key can get in at anytime.

The refrigerator did work, so that was nice. There was a couch that you couldn't pay any of us to attempt sitting on due to the dirty condition/pet hair. There was also a small table with a couple of chairs, which was convenient if you didn't mind the holes in the chairs.

Outside the room were a couple of wooden rockers, which surprisingly still worked due to the wonder of multiple screws at odd angles holding them together somehow. We used them for about 5 minutes before getting bombarded with mosquitos.

We didn't attempt the in-ground/above-ground/how-did-they-construct-that pool.

The good part is that the beach is literally across the non-busy street, so it's a very quick walk from room to ocean.

If I were back in my 20's without a family and either traveling by myself or with a person who didn't really care about room condition, then I would go back - simply due to location. But being middle-aged and having a family, I'll definitely not be back.

So, the reviews of this place will vary depending on individuals tolerance levels. If you are really tolerant of room/hotel condition, then I'm sure you'd be okay with this place. If you aren't really comfortable in a worn out somewhat dirty place then you'll not enjoy this place at all.

Room Tip: go somewhere else
