I enjoy good Jamaican food and the normally accommodating Jamaican hospitality. This offered a bit of both but just sort of missed the mark across the board. We had friends who insisted we dine at Sugar Shack while in the area and warned we would have a wait but it would be worth it. Well, we did have a wait. We arrived just after 5pm and were told it would be 45 minutes but at 7pm we were still waiting. When my husband inquired if it would be much longer the manager sort of snapped at him. We retreated back to our little corner and continued to wait in silence, he seemed to have sort of a soup Nazi attitude. I know that there were apparent locals who were seated before us even though they arrived much later and to a degree I understand that, but don't tell me 45 minutes and keep me waiting over 2 hours. The food was good but not to die for and may have been better if I had not waited so long. My husband's pork dish was on the dry, somewhat tough side. My veggie dish was good but I have had better. I would consider going again to try other dishes but only out of season and perhaps with a stash snacks. Actually, I would never wait that long again and would not entertain the idea of returning had our server had not been so gracious. The food was certainly an eclectic mix, tasty, service once seated was fine but the wait and rudeness of management was a real draw back. Maybe he had had a really bad day so I guess we will try it this fall when we return. I am hesitant to recommend it, just use your own judgement and EXPECT A LONG WAIT.

First timer at the Sugar Shack after missing opportunities over the years to make reservations. This time around we reserved the weekend of our arrival for that upcoming Tuesday night. We arrived on time and it took about 20 minutes after that to get seated. After enjoying a couple drinks at the outside bar with the family, the time passed quickly and we were seated.

George was a our waiter and he had a big personality and made us feel welcomed. We were a table of nine which included three children under 10. George kept the drinks flowing and made good recommendations for appetizers and entree's. We opted for the coconut shrimp and crab fritters which was a good starter. Also, they bring your two types of cake bread to start out the meal which we all enjoyed. For the entree, we all ordered either the ribeye, the rib and shrimp combo or the full rack of ribs. Ribs and ribeye are the house recommendations and I can say it met every expectation as did the rest of our food. Ribs truly do fall right off the bone and are excellent.

Overall, we had a great experience with no complaints and I would certainly return as well as recommend.

Tips that may assist with your experience are as follows:

The outside bar prefers credit card versus cash.
They also offer a bottles of wine from a local winery which was enjoyed(silver coast winery, I believe).
Reservations are absolutely recommended
I absolutely believe, complaining about wait time is frowned upon. The owner is in control of the seating and its her show to run.
Parking can be limited as well, so keep that in mind when planning your arrival times.
Large parties seem to be easily accomodated.
There is a gift shop.

Being a group of 10, we thought we should make reservations. Half hour after our reservation time, we checked on status. We were told 20 minutes. After that 15 minutes. After that we were told we were next, then a large group was seated in place of us. After over an hour, we were grudgingly given a table (I believe we were that last people to be seated) . Then to embarrass us for our persistence the owner went to table seated before us and announced loudly, I'm not your server, but I'll take your order while your server waits on that table. My suggestion was to walk out, but the rest of the family said let's blow it off: we had a Sr Citizen with a headache because she waited so long to eat, another member who wanted to be on the road by 9PM for a 3 hour drive home (which didn't happen because at 9 we just gave our order). So we explained the situation to the server and she was very apologetic and served us efficiently. We never received an apology from the managers.
We noticed many people taking orders to go, so my recommendation is to take food to go (they obviously knew something we didn't). Don't bother making reservations, it's a scam. It is first come, first serve. If you politely ask about the status of a reservation you are seen as a whiner, and there will be retaliation. The only thing the managers did right was to hire the right cook and wait staff. They know nothing about restaurant management. They know nothing about reservations management. Their retaliatory attitude is petty (maybe they are from New York). We were a good size group, spending over couple of hundred dollars in food orders, and we were treated horribly. If you think I'm making this up.... there must be a reason why the managers hung a sign in the waiting area next to the dining room door ' No Whining Zone". We were paying customers with a reservation; we never whined, and we took their ‘pay back’ like champs.
If you want to go to someplace that knows how to seat crowds of people, get good food, and attention from managers, go to Sharky's.

Our party of nine stopped in without a reservation and was told the wait would be an hour and a half. We elected to go elsewhere but made reservations for the next night, since the air outside the restaurant smelled fantastic.
We showed up a few minutes early for our 7:15 reservation but unfortunately, were not seated until about 7:50, much too long for all, but especially the ten year old who was with us.The restaurant was very busy, but it would have been considerate to have been alerted that there would still be a wait even with the booking. There was no apology offered for the delay once we got there either. We also had a fairly long wait for a server to come after seating, though we did get served water quickly.
The interior had some fun and interesting artwork and hangings which would have been fun to check out in less crowded and noisy conditions.
Several of us were contemplating one of the specialty splash cocktails -I ordered the strawberry one and thought it tasted weak but otherwise okay-three others tasted it and said it just tasted like sugar water and chose to abstain or order wine or beer.
The food took a long time as well, but it was wonderful! We had a variety including the Jamaican sampler, coconut shrimp, brown chicken, ribs, tuna and pork...not to mention the wonderfully spiced cornbread. The ribs and chicken were both especially falling off the bones moist and tender. All of the servings were huge and I think we all got take out boxes. The only exception being for the ten year old who had ordered a burger...server assumed he wanted a children's portion and it was not sufficient.
All of us had been to Ocean Isle many times but none of us had never tried Sugar Shack. The consensus was that we will definitely go back for the deliciousness. However, we will either do take out or go very early. Our server was very pleasant but maybe too busy to check back as often as we may have wished.

Not sure how it's possible, but the evening we ate at Sugar Shack they were out of Red Stripe beer and their marinated steak which several folks who were waiting in line with us were encouraging us to get. But, we had the delicious wings and the rib/shrimp combo plate, both of which were really good. As were the sides - the slaw and the bread and the sweet potato.
