“Hearty, No-Nonsense Breakfasts”
Reviewed 3 July 2014 via mobile

Coffee, eggs, & "pony potatoes" is all you need to know. This place is an Ocracoke staple, & is the perfect place for a hearty, no-frills breakfast.

They serve dinner too-- but I usually go for breakfast.

“Average fare, service was so-so.”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

We went to Pony Island at the recommendation of a local fisherman. According to reviews, this place has a great breakfast, but I wouldn't say the same for dinner. While the complimentary hush puppies are pretty good, that was really the only thing we enjoyed. It started off rocky, as there was an incredibly difficult language barrier between us and our waitress. While she was very nice, it was so hard to communicate with her...perhaps being a hostess would be a better fit for her? She got some of our order wrong, and then looked a bit dumb founded when we told her about them. One being that my son ordered a hamburger, and not a cheeseburger (he can't have cheese!). When we told her it was suppose to be a hamburger, she looked confused and acted as though she didn't do anything wrong. She literally just starred at us like she was waiting for him to just eat it anyway. We looked over the check later on, and she indeed wrote down cheeseburger when our son in fact said hamburger. Honest mistake, however, when people make mistakes they should own up to it. It was incredibly difficult to deal with, and us not understanding each other very well, really made our dining experience unpleasant because she would make a mistake and then not understand (or just didn't care) about how it was a mistake. PLEASE train your staff better, or put them in roles that are more suitable for them if they can't properly communicate with patrons and handle all the duties of the job properly. This is common sense, unless you want your patrons to be continually frustrated and write negative reviews.

The food was a bit bland,..not a lot of taste. My other son and I ordered the shrimp burgers. Other shrimp burgers we have had at other restaurants were fresh homemade shrimp patties...this was popcorn shrimp thrown on a hamburger bun. While the taste was fine, it wasn't what most people envision a 'shrimp burger' to be...at least not where we are from. Or, if whole shrimp are used, it is normally on a sub/hoggie bun so the shrimp don't fall out.

Would I recommend this place? Probably not...unless it has the type of breakfast other people are raving about, but not for dinner.

“Perfect breakfast spot!”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

We visited Ocracoke on a busy June weekend and stopped into Pony Island for a quick and cheap breakfast at about 9:30 am on a Saturday (they started to get really busy around 10 am).

They have a pretty extensive breakfast menu, great selection, and the prices are very reasonable! Service is great and very friendly, and we got our food very quickly! Highly recommend the biscuits - they are homemade and HUGE and fluffy and oh so good! Husband and I split the sausage gravy and biscuits, hotcakes, English muffin with ham, egg and cheese, and hash browns. Everything was delicious! We'll definitely return!

“Good place for breakfast, very popular”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

Pony Island Restaurant is obviously popular, as there was a line when we got there, but we were served fairly quickly. There is a nice variety on the menu for home-cooked breakfast, and the coffee is good. A nice bonus is the bike rentals at the office - probably the cheapest option on the island, for the same kind of bikes.
