“Worst Room Ever”
Reviewed 27 July 2013

NEVER STAY IN ROOM 108. If I could give the hotel less then a 1, I would. Room 108 smelled of mold and we could hardly breath and barely were able to sleep one night in the room. I finally registered on tripAdvisor so I could give this review, the room was that bad. What really took the cake, is that they knew this room was that bad but kept renting it out anyway. They continued to rent it out even after we complained because that night we had a couple sitting next to us at dinner who were complaining about the worst hotel room they had ever had. I travel all the time (16 years on the road, 4 to 5 times a year visiting) and I will agree, this is the absolute worse room ever.

We got lucky the hotel next door took pity on us and gave us a nice suite for a couple of nights at the last minute. That changed our mind about Ocracoke. Ocracoke was wonderful and we will go back just never ever to Ocracoke Harbor Inn.

Just to give an update on room 108.After doing everything but tearing the room down to bare studs we did find that a bird had nested in the air vent for the bathroom exhaust fan which was not letting the humid bath air out of the room and was giving it a musty smell. That situation has been taken care of and the room is good to go.

We just returned from a vacation on Ocracoke at the Harbor Inn. We had our two grandsons with us. It was well situated in the village so everything was easily accessible for the boys to walk around or rent bicycles. The suite was clean, though the furniture was a little tired. The staff was very nice and helpful. The view was spectacular, with nice seating both on our balcony as well as across the street on the dock. I would recommend this hotel for adults as there is not a pool, exercise facility or recreation for the teens we had with us.

Just finished my second visit to Ocracoke and stayed at the Ocracoke Harbor Inn both times. Had 2nd floor room overlooking the harbor. Great view and perfect location. Room has everything you need but the view and what makes it worth the stay. Ocracoke is a great place to visit if you love live music and beer. Jolly Rogers is my go to spot for a great view and music -- and the food and drink are not bad either. Great place to listen to listen to music and watch the sun set. TheTown/Village is small enough that you can walk or ride a bike anywhere you want to go. If you don't want the exercise - golf carts are available. We go to the outer-banks a couple of times a year and normally stay in Duck, but every once and a while it is worth the extra drive/ferry ride to go to Ocracoke

I chose the Ocracoke Harbor Inn because of it's great location with a view of Silver Lake but mostly because of the short walking distance to most of the shopping and dining on the main road. The agent suggested one of the cottages with a magnificent view of the Sound. We did not need all the room of the cottage but it sounded good for the same price so we took it. When we arrived we found out it was not on the same property as the Inn, but almost a mile away. It also did not include the breakfast or housekeeping, other things that were not mentioned. The cottage was fairly new and very nice and you could walk to the beach on the Sound, but this is not at all what we wanted and were really mad about the "bait and switch" routine. It is probably harder to rent these so maybe they push them in this manner. If I had all the information I never would have booked this. Of course everything was sold out and non-cancelable there was nothing I could do (also she didn't tell be that until she charged my card for the deposit upon booking). When I returned my keys at checkout I told the agent that there was no dishwasher detergent, she was rude and immediately got on the phone to the housekeeper, never even asking if we had a nice stay. Wow! Think we will ever stay there again?

Room Tip: Stay at the Inn if you want to walk everywhere and not have to drive to a pitch black street at nigh...

Although we have been vacationing on the Outer Banks for years, we have typically stayed in the Northern Banks (Duck / Corolla). After many day trips to Ocracoke over the years, this year we decided to do something different and stay on the island instead; we very much enjoyed our time on Ocracoke, and the staff and accommodations at the Ocracoke Harbor Inn played a large role in making this a great vacation.

We frequently travel to OBX with a few other friends, but this year it was just the two of us. In addition, our schedules this year did not allow for our trip to be a full, week-long stay (from weekend to weekend), which made it difficult for us to find a smaller (1 or 2 br) house for rent for the specific days we wanted. However, we also wanted something a little more spacious than just a standard hotel room. Our suite at this property ended up being the perfect fit for us on this trip, as it gave us a great combination of condo / small beach house accommodations along with all of the standard amenities of a hotel.

We stayed in one of their 3rd-floor, one-bedroom suites, which included a bedroom with a king bed, spacious bathroom with a jacuzzi tub, and a separate living room area with a small dinette space and kitchen, as well as a large deck with a wonderful view of Silver Lake. The kitchen contained a full-sized fridge, toaster, coffee maker, blender and microwave (all of the basic appliances except for a proper stove / oven) and was also fully stocked with silverware, plates, bowls, coffee mugs and glassware. Essentially, our suite was fairly equivalent to a one-bedroom condo; and really not that much different than a single floor in some of the smaller (2-4 bedroom), 3-story houses that we have rented in OBX over the years - maybe a little smaller, but it was a perfect size for a couple.

When we arrived, one thing we noticed right away was how clean the suite was – it was virtually spotless; the housekeeping staff here did an excellent job. We both spend a fair amount of time in hotels for work during the year, and have both stayed in rooms at full-service, 5-star hotels around the country that were not as clean as our suite here. In addition, everything was in perfect working order – appliances, shower, air conditioning, etc. (which may sound odd to point out, but we have learned over the years that this is not always the case at some OBX accommodations). Also, it was extremely quiet. While we would of course hear some of the other guests, or people walking by, when we were outside on our deck, we never once heard any noise coming from either outside or from any of the other rooms while we were inside; and from coming and going, we did know that there were other guests in rooms next to and below us. Finally, every member of the staff that we interacted with during our stay was nothing other than polite and professional.

In short, our stay was perfect with no issues or complaints – and we thank Byron and the rest of the staff for that. We enjoyed our time on Ocracoke so much that we are considering returning here next year for a full week, instead of going back to Duck / Corolla. If that ends up being the case, the Ocracoke Harbor Inn will be our first choice for accommodations on the island.

Stayed in Suite 302. Nice view from private and quiet balcony. No stove top. Nice master bedroom and nice bathroom with awesome jacuzzi tub. Shower floor was stained and seemed a bit creaky like it needed to be replaced. Air conditioning worked well but was a bit noisy. The pull out sleeper had an inflatable mattress which was annoying since it had to blown up and then deflated every day. The biggest problem is that each suite is very different and varies in size. There isn't really a way to tell what you are paying for when you book since their website shows only the largest suite (305 I think).

The Ocracoke Harbor Inn is in a PERFECT location on one of the Outer Banks top gems, Ocracoke Island. Nothing fancy. Just a great view of the harbor, in a QUIET area of the village but within walking distance to everything in the village. The room we had was two double beds on the first floor with a private porch, including two "Adirondack" chairs and a table. The street was very quiet, with mostly bikers, walkers and golf carts making their way by.

The breakfast is a serious continental breakfast so look elsewhere if you want a big breakfast, but it's enough to get you started.

The office staff were personable enough and there were golf carts available for rent. We did one for 6 hours and it was a great way to get around to all the nooks and crannys in the village in a short period of time.

Again, not overly fancy, but a great, quiet place on a beautiful island.

Room Tip: Make sure it's a front-facing room if you want a view of the harbor.
